Chapter 63 The Person Behind
For Sophia and the kids' safety, Celeste called in the Blackwood family's private jet.
That same day, they jetted off to Country M.
"Mr. Hughes," Jake's assistant, Micah Cooper, knocked and stepped into Jake's office.
Jake glanced up. "What's up?"
Micah leaned in and whispered something to Jake.
The warmth in Jake's eyes faded away.
He stood up and walked out, with Micah hurrying behind him.
In Country M, Tiffany figured that since she saved Gabriel's life again, and knowing Gabriel was a grateful guy, he'd definitely let her back into his life, considering she was his savior.
But after Gabriel woke up, he didn't even glance her way.
She couldn't figure out what went wrong.
So, Tiffany tried to reach out to that mysterious person.
The mysterious person sent a message.
Mysterious Person: [The chance is there. If you can't seize it, that's on you.]
Tiffany was so mad she almost threw her phone.
She wanted to curse but didn't dare.
This mysterious person was clearly way more powerful than her.
Grinding her teeth, Tiffany headed to the hospital again that evening.
She was determined to make a good impression on Gabriel. Luckily, there were no annoying people around to mess things up. If she could just seize this chance...
Tiffany's eyes lit up.
She thought, 'If I have a baby with Gabriel, that'll tie us together. Gabriel loves kids; he'd definitely want to give the child a complete family. Then, I could rightfully become Mrs. Lancaster. As for Sophia, once I'm pregnant, she'll be out!'
With this plan in mind, Tiffany went to the hospital but didn't rush to Gabriel's room. Instead, she caught up with an old friend.
Gabriel's room was heavily guarded, and even doctors and nurses had to go through strict checks to get in.
Harrison figured Ruth and the others would arrive around midnight.
Gabriel had a slight fever today and was pretty out of it.
In the evening, after giving instructions to the bodyguards and caregivers, Harrison left.
Alex and Benjamin were in another room. They were seriously injured but doing better than Gabriel.
Everything seemed normal. After nightfall, a nurse came in to take Gabriel's temperature. The bodyguards checked her and let her in.
But ten minutes passed, and the nurse hadn't come out. The bodyguards sensed something was off and went in to check.
"What are you doing!"
The nurse was so startled she dropped what she was holding.
The bodyguards quickly rushed in and restrained her.
Harrison had just picked up Ruth and the others and was leading them into the hospital when he saw the bodyguards dragging a nurse out of Gabriel's room. Harrison's eyelid twitched, and he hurried over.
"What happened?"
The bodyguards showed Harrison what they found, and he immediately got it.
His face darkened.
"Take her to the director!"
Ruth and Sophia took the kids into the room while Harrison went to deal with the nurse.
"Gabriel," Ruth reached out, looking at Gabriel lying there. His handsome face was covered in injuries, and Ruth felt a pang of heartache.
"Daddy," the three kids gathered around the bed, softly calling Gabriel.
Gabriel kept his eyes shut, still out cold.
Sophia's heart raced with worry.
Harrison hadn't spilled many details about Gabriel's recent brush with danger. Given the recent chaos with the Lancaster Group, Sophia felt someone was gunning for Gabriel, trying to take him out.
Colin stood nearby, his phone buzzing. Seeing it was David, he stepped outside to take the call.
Harrison quickly pieced together what was up with the nurse.
After getting the scoop, Harrison chuckled.
He walked back in just as Ruth and Sophia were stepping out.
Ruth asked, "What was up with that nurse?"
Harrison glanced at Sophia, making her curious too.
She thought, 'Does this have something to do with me?'
"The nurse is a schoolmate of Tiffany's. Tiffany asked her to swipe something from Gabriel while he was out. The nurse got scared Gabriel might wake up, so she gave him some anesthesia. Just after she finished, the bodyguards noticed something was off and stopped her in time."
Sophia furrowed her brows and asked, "What was she trying to take?"
Harrison replied, "Something to get Tiffany pregnant."
Sophia went silent.
Ruth was so mad she slapped the armrest of her wheelchair, her face turning red with anger.
"That damn Tiffany! Does she think having a kid will make her part of the Lancasters? She's dreaming! That shameless, despicable witch."
Ruth, who rarely cursed, was truly livid.
Ruth felt a bit dizzy.
"Grandma, don't get worked up." Sophia quickly tried to calm Ruth down.
Harrison said, "Your health comes first. Good thing they caught Tiffany's plan before it went too far."
Ruth wanted to say more but held back. No matter whose kid Tiffany had, it would ultimately be the child who suffered.
Ruth had to swallow her anger for now, growing even more disgusted with Tiffany.
"Tell me exactly what happened. How did Gabriel get hurt?"
Harrison recounted everything to Ruth, including how Tiffany had saved him.
Sophia listened from the side.
She asked, puzzled, "How did Tiffany end up there?"
Harrison replied, "That's what we're both wondering. But according to Tiffany, she was indeed there with her team for a live broadcast."
Sophia pondered, 'Could Tiffany have orchestrated this to save Gabriel again and make him grateful? Does Tiffany have such influence in Country M?'
"This couldn't have been Tiffany's doing," Harrison saw Sophia's suspicion and explained, "Although Tiffany studied in Country M, she doesn't have much pull here."
"Gabriel came to Country M because Christopher suddenly ended their partnership. Tiffany doesn't have the power to make Christopher make such a decision."
"But I believe someone behind is helping Tiffany."
Sophia nodded slightly.
Harrison continued, "We need to find out who that person is. They are the one pulling the strings."
Ruth gripped the armrest tightly. She had a suspicion but wasn't entirely sure.
The more powerful you were, the more enemies you made. The Lancasters were no exception.
Years ago, Gabriel had expanded the business in Country M alone, stepping on many toes. It could be those people seeking revenge.
Ruth thought for a moment and decided to warn Harrison.
"There's someone you need to be careful of."
"Who?"
"Jake."
