Chapter 569 Struggle
Sophia sniffled, wiped her tears, and looked up with red eyes. "Back then, I was an exchange student abroad when I got a call saying my dad was locked up. I rushed back home."
"But when I got back, my mom told me he was dead."
"Everyone said he killed himself out of guilt, but Mom and I didn't buy it. After that, Mom's health tanked, and we went broke. We owed a ton of money."
"To pay off the debt, I asked for help from a bunch of people, but no luck. I had to work my butt off to make money." Sophia choked up again. It took her a while to pull herself together. Celeste hugged her and gently patted her shoulder.
"If I hadn't been so busy working and paid more attention to Mom, she wouldn't have left me a suicide note and passed away."
"I lost my parents, and Logan took me to the Browns. I thought they were being nice, but they just wanted to marry me off to some old dude to save their company."
Sophia grabbed Celeste's hand. "Grandma, there's something fishy about my dad's case. I've been trying to dig into it for years, but I keep hitting dead ends and running into obstacles."
Celeste felt really bad. She only knew that Francis had used crappy building materials, causing a new house to collapse.
The accident killed five people and seriously injured ten.
The Kelly Group, as the developer, couldn't dodge the blame, so everyone pointed fingers at Francis.
Francis tried to pin it on the procurement manager and faked the manager's suicide to cover it up, but the cops eventually figured it out.
So, Francis got locked up and was hated by everyone.
Even now, Francis's name still made people's blood boil, even after all this time.
Of course, this was the story Celeste had heard. What really happened, maybe only Francis knew, but he was already dead.
"Sophia, don't worry, we'll find out the truth and clear your dad's name."
Even if there wasn't direct evidence, it didn't mean there were no clues. If they worked hard enough, they'd uncover the truth.
Celeste also didn't believe Francis would do such a thing. She had never met him, but from his love for Susan and Sophia, she didn't think he was heartless enough to kill someone.
That night, Celeste told David about it.
David said, "I've already got Colin on it. He found out someone else is also looking into it."
"Someone else? Who?"
"I don't know. I told Colin to be careful and keep it quiet until we know whose side they're on."
Celeste thought for a moment. "Could it be Ruth?"
Ruth was so smart; she must have noticed something.
"I'll ask her when I see her next time." The more Celeste thought about it, the more likely it seemed.
In the afternoon, Diana drove alone to the identification agency. She nervously took the report from the doctor.
She didn't have the guts to read it until she walked out of the hospital.
She was terrified of getting the news she didn't want.
"Why don't you open it?"
A voice startled Diana from behind, making her jump and drop the report.
She hurriedly picked it up and accidentally saw the result.
Mia glanced at it with a smirk.
"So? Ready to face the music now?"
The result hit Diana like a ton of bricks. She froze, her face blank, not knowing how to react.
She really wasn't a Wolf.
She and Linda weren't mother and daughter at all.
Seeing people coming and going, Mia pulled Diana into her car while she was still in a daze.
Diana was already in tears.
She had been so happy, thinking she had found her real parents, and that they hadn't abandoned her on purpose.
She had a great time with her "parents." Linda treated her like gold, and even though Daniel wasn't as warm, he still cared for her.
Diana thought, 'But now, it's all a lie. I'm not their daughter.'
Diana's tears fell.
Mia handed her a tissue and wiped her tears.
"Go ahead and cry. I know it hurts. Letting it out will make you feel better."
Diana broke down and hugged Mia, crying her heart out.
After about half an hour, noticing she had stopped crying, Mia asked, "What are you gonna do now?"
Diana said, "Since it was a mistake, I have to tell Mom and Dad the truth."
Life in a rich family was nice, but she wasn't someone who craved luxury.
If she had never known her true identity, it would have been fine. But now that she knew, she couldn't lie to Linda, who had been so good to her.
Linda deserved to know the truth.
Diana thought firmly, 'It's just going back to my old life. No big deal. I've faced worse; I'm not scared of going back to a tough life.'
Plus, her adoptive parents were so good to her, and they needed her too.
Seeing the determination in Diana's eyes, Mia felt a pang of anxiety. She suppressed her impatience and said calmly, "Do you like Paul?"
Diana's expression froze, and she looked at Mia in surprise.
Mia smiled, "We can all see it when you look at Paul."
Diana neither admitted nor denied it.
"You should already know about the Watsons. Even though Paul is Aragorn's nephew, he's still one of the Watsons. Aragorn will definitely meddle in Paul's marriage."
Diana's heart tightened as she listened to Mia continue.
"Aragorn will never let Paul marry a woman without money and power. If you tell Linda the truth, you'll have no shot with Paul. Think it over."
Diana's hand slowly crumpled the report, the smooth paper becoming wrinkled.
"You can only marry Paul if you stay a Wolf. Otherwise, you'll end up like Caroline, just a side piece."
Diana snapped back, "Caroline is not a side piece!"
Diana added in her mind, 'Clearly, Daisy is.'
A sharp glint flashed in Mia's eyes.
"Fine, even so, do you think Paul will ignore his wife's background like Nicholas did? You like Paul, but you don't know anything about his family."
Diana pressed her lips together, saying nothing.
She was torn inside. She couldn't let go of Paul, but she felt uneasy not telling the truth.
Mia's voice echoed in her ears like a devil's whisper.
"Paul has a half-brother in Country Y who's better than Paul at everything. Paul's dad, Joseph, plans to pass the company to his illegitimate son."
"If Paul wants to be the heir, he has to marry into a powerful family, and the Wolfs are his best bet."
Mia took out her phone and showed Diana some reports from Country Y about Joseph's illegitimate son and various news about him and Paul.
