Chapter 622 Waiting

Finally, Daniel rolled up behind Caroline and scooped up Josie.

When they grabbed Josie, they bumped into Nicholas, so it turned into a whole squad dinner with Daniel, Caroline, and Josie.

Daniel was all about serving up the food.

"This is fire, try it. Josie, eat up. Caroline, you're too skinny, girl, you need to chow down."

An hour later, they wrapped up and bounced.

In the parking lot, Daniel was dragging his feet to leave.

He whipped out a bank card and handed it to Caroline.

"This card's got no limit. When you get some free time, go splurge with your friends."

Linda had already given her a no-limit card, and now Daniel was doing the same.

Caroline was speechless for a second.

After a beat, she said, "I already got one."

Daniel figured it was from Linda. "Keep this one too."

He shoved it into her hand, not giving her a chance to refuse, and dipped out.

"It's late, you should get Josie home. I'll catch you tomorrow."

Caroline watched him leave, feeling all warm and fuzzy inside.

In the car, Josie snuggled up to Nicholas.

Nicholas noticed the card in her hand, smirking a bit, his voice smooth, "Mr. Wolf's got mad love for you."

He held Caroline's hand. "Maybe you should hang with them more."

Caroline gripped the card. Meeting Linda and having dinner with Daniel today had stirred something in her.

"Mom, I'm sleepy," Josie mumbled, cuddling closer.

Caroline hugged her tight.

"Sleep, I'll wake you when we're home."

"Okay."

The rest of the ride was quiet but cozy.

At the border of two neighboring countries around Country Z, after a wild chase, the nasty human trafficker Jared finally got nabbed.

Nicholas shot the news to Caroline and Daniel.

Now they just had to wait for Jared to get shipped back for trial.

Mia, after double-checking, realized the Jared who'd hit her up earlier was a fake.

She'd been played.

But luckily, she hadn't spilled any major tea.

Still, she felt uneasy. She was alone in the big villa.

Michael was out all day, and Daisy, with Trevor, was still at the Watson Mansion and hadn't come back. Even when Daisy did pop in, it was just to whine about how Linda and Daniel's attitude towards her had flipped.

'Well, duh,' Mia thought.

Caroline was their real daughter, while Daisy was just their niece.

Mia found it super ironic. When their daughter was MIA, they treated Daisy like gold to ease their guilt.

Once their daughter was back, Daisy got the boot.

Mia cursed under her breath, 'The real villains here are Daniel and Linda!'

If it weren't for them, she'd be running the Wolfs. Michael would be the big boss of the Wolf Group, and she'd be the boss's wife!

"Mom." A clear voice snapped Mia out of her thoughts.

There was still a hint of crazy on her face.

Mia turned to see Samuel at the entrance with his suitcase, frowning. She quickly pulled herself together and walked over.

"Samuel, what are you doing back? You didn't give me a heads-up so I could send someone to get you."

Samuel grumbled, "With all the drama going on here, how could I not come back?"

He had some loose ends to tie up at his school abroad, so he was supposed to return next month. But after hearing from Clayton about the chaos at home, he rushed back.

Seeing the house in shambles, with stuff everywhere and dirt piling up, his frown deepened.

"Where are the servants?"

"They got the boot," Mia's eyes darted around.

"Why?"

Mia grabbed Samuel's hand. "Come in, I'll whip you up something to eat later."

"Mom!" Samuel's voice was stern. "What's the deal?"

Mia's eyes welled up as she looked at Samuel, on the verge of breaking down.

"Linda fired all the servants!"

Daniel and Linda were the ones who hired and paid the staff, and Linda managed them.

After Linda came and slapped her that day, she fired all the servants and cooks, saying she wouldn't cover any of their expenses anymore.

And Mia couldn't find replacements fast enough.

So the house had been a wreck for days, with no one to clean it.

"Not just that, Linda's been trash-talking me everywhere. I'm basically blacklisted. I can't even show my face around anymore."

Mia covered her face and cried.

But Samuel just frowned harder, not even trying to comfort her.

"I heard everything. You messed up, so you gotta deal with the fallout. Aunt Linda's not wrong. You almost got Uncle Daniel killed."

Samuel had always been well-behaved, sensible, and smart. He looked up to Daniel the most, and Daniel always liked having him around to teach him.

"I didn't!" Mia still wouldn't admit it.

Samuel didn't want to argue, so he bent down and started cleaning up.

Mia sat angrily on the couch. Her phone buzzed with a news alert, and she glanced at it casually. She wasn't paying attention at first, but then she saw a familiar name, Jared!

She quickly picked up her phone and clicked on the news.

The phone slipped from her hand and hit the floor.

Mia's hands and feet went numb.

Mia thought, 'Jared's been caught! Would he rat me out? No, I have to make sure he can't.'

But thanks to Linda, she couldn't use the Wolfs' connections anymore.

'Am I just supposed to wait for the truth to come out?' Mia pondered.

"Mom, what's wrong?" Samuel saw Mia trembling and thought she was sick.

Mia lowered her head, afraid Samuel would sense something was off.

"I... I'm not feeling well. I'm going upstairs to rest."

Samuel watched her retreat, feeling like things were way more complicated than they seemed.

It seemed like he needed to talk to Daniel.

As soon as Samuel left the house, Michael came back.

Seeing the empty, cold house, Michael didn't want to be there at all.

He didn't know when it started, but this place no longer felt like home.

"Michael," Mia screamed sharply.

Michael jumped and snapped, "What now?"

"Jared's been caught."

"What?"

"Jared's been caught. If you don't do something, he might spill everything, and then we're really screwed."

Michael's legs went weak.
