Chapter 555 Still Don't Believe?

They all froze for a sec, and Caroline started reminiscing about the good ol' days jamming with Nicholas.

Last time they played together? Man, that was ages ago.

Nicholas was a beast on the piano. During the school celebration, they rocked the stage together, and the whole school was buzzing about it. People even called them the ultimate music duo.

"Alright," Nicholas said, grabbing the sheet music and nodding at Melissa's request.

Melissa asked them to stick around for dinner and whipped up a few dishes.

Caroline couldn't say no to Melissa, so she ended up having dinner with Nicholas before heading out.

It was already pitch black outside.

The ice and snow had melted, and it was freezing. As soon as Caroline stepped out, she felt the chill hit her.

She shivered.

Nicholas immediately took off his coat and handed it to her.

"No way, you'll freeze too," Caroline protested.

Nicholas glanced at his legs. If he could stand, he would've just draped the coat over her shoulders himself.

"If you don't wear it, then neither will I," Nicholas said, placing the coat on his wheelchair's armrest.

Caroline hesitated for a moment, then reluctantly took the coat and put it on.

Nicholas's coat was huge. Even though she wasn't tiny, it still felt oversized, and she had to roll up the sleeves.

The coat had his unique scent, and Caroline couldn't help but think back to the past.

"Ms. Allen is super hospitable. I'm stuffed. Let's take a stroll around campus," Nicholas said in a low voice.

Caroline thought, 'Is Nicholas saying he wants to take a walk with me after dinner?'

She wanted to say, 'What's the point of a walk when you're in a wheelchair?'

But she kept her mouth shut.

She had eaten too much too and needed to walk it off.

With Nicholas's coat, she didn't feel as cold as the wind blew.

The campus was lit up with streetlights, and a few couples were walking hand in hand, chatting about school or just life.

In contrast, Caroline and Nicholas were dead silent.

Neither of them spoke.

But it was a rare moment of warmth.

Half an hour later, Caroline finally broke the silence. "It's getting late. Josie is still waiting for me at home."

"Alright, let's go."

At that moment, Sharpe, who had left earlier, was already waiting in the car.

The next day, Sharpe went to pick up the paternity test report himself.

Nicholas sat behind his desk, holding the report. When he saw the results, a sarcastic smile crept onto his lips.

He put the report back in the envelope and checked the time.

"Let's head to Caroline's place."

Sharpe came over to push him.

Forty minutes later, Nicholas rolled up to Caroline's house.

Caroline was about to have lunch. The rumors at school had finally died down, and Melissa had provided evidence to clear her name.

The investigation into Caroline had also wrapped up.

She could go back to teaching at the school next week.

Caroline was in a good mood.

"Daddy!" Josie's eyes lit up when she saw Nicholas.

Nicholas came over and patted her head.

"Have you eaten, Daddy?" Josie asked, her cheeks puffed out.

"Not yet."

"I'll get a plate for Daddy." Josie adorably jumped off her chair and ran to the kitchen to grab a set of utensils for Nicholas.

So, Nicholas stuck around for lunch.

Caroline wasn't even fazed by it anymore.

Lisa was used to it too, and luckily, she had made enough food.

After lunch, Nicholas played with Josie for a bit. When Caroline put Josie down for a nap, he pulled out the paternity test report and handed it to her.

Caroline felt a bit jittery.

She held the envelope and looked at Nicholas.

Seeing how chill he was, she had a hunch about the results.

Sure enough, when Caroline opened it.

It showed that Nicholas and Trevor weren't related at all.

'Trevor isn't Nicholas's kid!' Caroline cheered inwardly.

Her worries and tension finally melted away.

Caroline silently read the report. From an angle Nicholas couldn't see, she couldn't help but smile.

She quietly put the report back in the envelope and handed it to Nicholas.

But this only proved that Daisy's kid had nothing to do with Nicholas; it didn't prove he hadn't hooked up with Daisy.

Caroline remembered the time she had seen Nicholas and Daisy lying on the same bed.

That image had haunted her for a long time.

She could still remember the gut-wrenching feeling vividly.

Just as Caroline was feeling happy, she suddenly felt indifferent again, and Nicholas was puzzled.

"Can you believe me now? I have nothing to do with Daisy."

Caroline pressed her lips together, her gaze drifting outside the window.

Her silence made Nicholas's heart sink. 'Does she still not believe me? What more can I do to make her believe me? To make her come back to me,' Nicholas wondered.

Nicholas looked down at his crippled legs, feeling a growing sense of helplessness.

After a long time, Caroline spoke in a hoarse voice.

"Does it still matter whether I believe you or not?"

She had been hurt deeply. When she needed his explanation the most, he had said nothing.

She had clawed her way out of endless despair, only for fate to throw her and Nicholas back together, tangling them up again.

Nicholas felt panicked. At that moment, he was like a kid who had lost his favorite toy. He urgently wheeled closer, grabbed her hand tightly, and looked into her eyes.

"Of course it matters, it matters a lot, Caroline. Do you know how much I hated you during those six years of separation? But even though I hated you, I still loved you. You are the only woman I've been with."

"I even prayed every moment for you to come back, even if I mistakenly thought you were married, I still wanted to see you often."

"And you said you'd give me a chance to prove myself. I've proven it now, so why don't you believe me?"

"Fine, even if you don't believe me now, please don't leave me again, okay? I'll spend the rest of my life showing you."

Nicholas's words hit Caroline right in the feels.

She stared blankly at the anxious Nicholas.

After a while, she said softly, "You say you haven't been with any other woman, but I saw you and Daisy lying on the same bed."

"What?" Nicholas's eyes widened in shock. "When did this happen?"

"I heard you two were engaged. I didn't believe it at first, but when I went to your apartment, I saw you and Daisy lying on the same bed, very intimately."

Nicholas frowned. He didn't remember that.
