Chapter 685 Does Not Belong
Sophia had been hanging around for almost an hour.
She thought, 'Might as well head home first.'
Sophia gave a slight nod, and Jake, grinning ear to ear, hurried over to the car and opened the passenger door.
"Sophia, hop in."
She got in, settled herself, and shot off a message to Gabriel, Alex, and Harrison, asking them to call her back when they could.
With her phone in hand, Sophia started browsing for the latest news on the Lancaster Group.
Nothing new popped up, just a few articles about their financial report.
Once they were on the road, Jake noticed Sophia still seemed preoccupied with Gabriel, which made him a bit jealous.
He thought, 'Gabriel's really starting to matter more to her.'
Jake's grip tightened on the steering wheel, and he furrowed his brows. The car glided smoothly down the road.
"Is your work gonna be in the Fusion fashion show?" Jake asked, trying to shift her focus.
Sophia looked up and placed her phone on her lap.
"Not sure yet. It's still in the works, and whether it gets showcased depends on a bunch of reviews and approvals."
Even though she was prepping for the show, she wasn't the one deciding which outfits made the cut.
"Good luck, you got this."
Sophia smiled, "Thanks."
"I haven't seen the kids in ages. How are they? Is Emma still being a handful?" Jake tried to steer the conversation towards the kids.
Sophia's face softened. "They're all good. Oh, and Sam's started talking now."
Jake's eyes widened. "Sam's talking? For real? Does that mean he's all better?"
"Yeah, Colin said Sam can be like any other kid now. But he's still kinda shy and doesn't really hang out with others, just us. He's a bit reserved."
Talking about the kids seemed to lighten Sophia's mood a bit.
Jake's eyes narrowed slightly.
"How did Sam get better?"
Sophia's expression shifted.
"Sam went through something rough and just started talking."
Even though that incident got Sam to speak, Sophia still despised Tiffany. If it weren't for her, Sam wouldn't have gone through so much pain.
Jake's voice dropped, "What kind of trauma did he go through?"
Sophia's face darkened. "Tiffany locked Sam in an elevator at an abandoned construction site, trying to kill him."
Even now, thinking about it made Sophia's heart ache.
She thought, 'My poor Sam went through so much because I didn't find him sooner.'
A cold glint flashed in Jake's eyes, and his voice was filled with sympathy for Sam.
"Being trapped like that, Sam must've been scared out of his mind."
Just then, the phone rang. Sophia quickly picked it up and saw it was Gabriel calling.
"Hey," Sophia answered quickly.
Gabriel's voice sounded a bit worn out, "Sorry, I had something urgent come up and couldn't pick you up. Are you heading home?"
Gabriel's tone was full of apology.
Sophia replied, "Yeah, I'm on my way."
"Alright, text me when you get home. I still have some work to finish here."
Sophia wanted to ask if something was wrong, but she knew it couldn't be explained in a quick call, so she softly replied, "Okay."
After hanging up, Sophia felt a bit more at ease.
The car wasn't speeding, and she and Jake chatted here and there along the way.
Even though Jake had slowed down, they eventually pulled up to their destination.
The car stopped at the entrance of Lancaster Manor.
"I'll get off here. It's late; I'll treat you to a meal another day," Sophia said, unbuckling her seatbelt.
"Alright, good night."
"Good night."
The gate opened, and Sophia walked in. As it slowly closed behind her, Jake stayed in the car, not in a rush to leave.
He watched Sophia's figure disappear and then stared at the grand gate.
"Why don't I have anything?" Jake's voice was hoarse, tinged with coldness.
He thought, 'I lost my dad, I lost the Lancaster Group, and now I'm losing Sophia too? It's like nothing is ever mine. Why does Gabriel get to have Sophia?'
Jake's eyes gradually turned red, and his handsome features hardened with coldness. He pulled out his phone and made a call.
Gabriel didn't come home all night. Sophia had a bad dream and woke up at dawn, feeling uneasy but unable to remember the dream, only that it was very bad.
This left her feeling a bit anxious.
It was still early, but she couldn't fall back asleep.
Sophia got up, put on a coat, and went to the kids' room.
The three kids had slept in one room last night. Ethan and Sam were on the top bunk, and Emma was on the bottom bunk. Sophia kissed each of them on the forehead.
When she kissed Emma, Emma woke up and rubbed her eyes.
"Mommy?" Emma's voice was groggy.
"Yes, Mommy's here."
Emma shifted her body.
"Mommy, sleep."
Sophia must have missed her, so she came over to sleep with her.
Sophia lay down and hugged Emma's soft little body. Emma fell back asleep in her arms.
Sophia thought she wouldn't be able to sleep, but she fell asleep within two minutes.
When she woke up, it was already daylight. Ethan and Sam were squatting by the bed, watching her.
"When did Mommy come?" Ethan asked with a stern face.
Sam blinked.
Emma snorted, "Mommy came to be with me."
Sam quietly said, "What about me?"
Sophia hugged Sam and kissed him. "Mommy came to be with you and Ethan too."
Sam smiled, Emma was unhappy, and Ethan remained silent.
Ruth was the first to get up. When she learned that Gabriel hadn't come home all night, she frowned but quickly relaxed.
Tiffany was in the mental hospital, so there was no worry that Gabriel had gone to find her.
Ruth thought, 'Besides, Tiffany had hurt Sam. How could Gabriel still be involved with Tiffany?'
But Gabriel not coming home all night made Ruth ponder for a while.
The three kids came out noisily, not seeing Gabriel and thinking he had gone to work early.
"Miss Kelly, there's a Mr. Hughes outside saying he's here to take you to work," a servant said to Sophia.
'Jake?' She thought.
Sophia quickly said, "Please invite him in."
"Okay." The servant went to relay the message and soon returned, "Mr. Hughes said he won't come in. He's waiting outside for you."
Sophia checked the time and didn't want to keep Jake waiting, so she grabbed some bread from the table.
"Grandma, I'm off to work. Have Desmond take the kids to school later."
"Alright, you go ahead," Ruth replied.
Jake stood by the car, the sunlight casting a warm glow on him.
