Chapter 436 It Was Up to You

In the car, Ruth held the three kids close, constantly reassuring them.

"It's okay. Everything will be fine. Don't worry. Sophie will be alright. Gabriel's there; he's capable and will save her."

The kids huddled in Ruth's arms, filling the car with unease and worry.

No news had come from City B yet. A whole night had passed, and they still didn't know what was happening.

At dawn, Ruth and the kids returned to City B.

Betty finally got a call from Alex.

"Mrs. Lancaster, they're at the hospital now."

When Ruth and the kids heard this, their faces changed instantly.

"Is Sophie hurt? Is it serious?" Ruth asked, her voice trembling.

"Alex didn't say. We're heading to the hospital now."

Betty immediately instructed the driver.

An hour later, Alex met Ruth and the kids at the hospital entrance.

The kids jumped out of the car and ran, with Alex quickly chasing after them and Betty pushing Ruth behind.

"Mommy!" the kids shouted as they rushed to Sophia.

Sophia was covered in dried blood, leaning against the wall, her eyes fixed on the operating room.

She only moved when she heard the kids calling her, looking down at their worried faces.

Sophia suddenly squatted down and hugged them tightly.

"Mommy, you're hurt," Ethan said, his voice choked with tears.

Emma cried, "Mommy, you're covered in blood."

Sam, with red eyes, also called out, "Mommy."

It took Sophia a long time to speak.

"The blood on me is your daddy's."

Emma asked, "What happened to Daddy?"

"He's very, very badly hurt."

The kids looked towards the operating room, all worried about Gabriel inside.

Emma hugged Sophia's neck, her tears falling. She was very sad and worried, but it seemed Sophia was even more distressed.

"Mommy, Daddy will be okay," Emma said, stroking Sophia's head, comforting her just as Sophia usually comforted them.

Ethan, with tears in his eyes, also said firmly, "Yes, Daddy is so strong; he will be fine."

Sam, too, was encouraged.!"Daddy will be fine!"

Even though the kids were scared, they tried their best to comfort Sophia.

"Yes, Gabriel is very strong; he wouldn't let me go through such pain again," Ruth said, holding back her tears and gripping the wheelchair's armrest tightly.

Her husband and son were gone, but they would pray for Gabriel in heaven.

Ruth prayed silently.

Alex stood silently by, his eyes red.

Gabriel had been stabbed multiple times and lost a lot of blood; the situation was really not good.

The surgery had been going on for three hours, with blood bags being sent in one after another.

Suddenly, the door opened, and a nurse came out, speaking quickly and urgently, "Are any family members here? The blood bank is running low, and we don't have time to get more from elsewhere. Who has the same blood type?"

Before the nurse could finish, Alex said immediately, "I have the same blood type."

"Alright, come with me."

As Alex passed by Sophia and the kids, he said firmly, "Don't worry, Mr. Lancaster will be fine."

Sophia said, "Please, Alex."

Alex followed the nurse inside.

Another long hour passed. Sophia held on; she couldn't collapse. She had three kids in her arms and Ruth beside her.

Ruth couldn't take another blow.

Everyone waited outside in agony.

Finally, Alex was wheeled out first. He looked pale and weak, but his voice was firm.

"Mrs. Lancaster, Ms. Kelly, don't worry."

Ruth said, "Alex, thank you. Go rest now."

"Okay."

Alex was taken to a room to rest, and shortly after, the doctor came out, letting out a heavy sigh of relief.

"Fortunately, the patient has strong willpower and didn't give up. The knife wounds damaged his internal organs, and he lost a lot of blood. His condition is not optimistic, but we managed to save him for now. The patient has been sent to the ICU, and we will do our best to treat him."

Gabriel survived, but he was not out of danger yet.

The ICU did not allow visitors, so Sophia could only take the kids and Ruth to look from a distance.

They couldn't see much, but it seemed they saw everything clearly—how fragile Gabriel's life was at that moment, the numbers on the cold machines.

"Mrs. Lancaster!" Betty noticed Ruth's condition was not right.

After Ruth relaxed, she felt dizzy, her face turning pale.

Sophia said, "Call the doctor quickly."

Gabriel was not out of danger yet, and now Ruth had fallen ill.

The entire Lancaster family was left with three very young kids.

Sophia stayed by Ruth's bedside. She hadn't slept all night and looked very haggard after everything that had happened.

Ruth held her hand.

"Sophie," Ruth said weakly, "Can I ask you a favor?"

"Please, go ahead."

Ruth was too anxious, triggering an old illness. It wasn't serious but required rest.

"The Lancaster family only has me, an old woman, and Gabriel  is still in danger, and the kids are still young. With Gabriel in this condition, the Lancaster family is bound to be in chaos. I'm afraid the Lancaster Group will also be in turmoil."

"So I want to ask you to help me manage the Lancaster family, take care of the kids, and let Gabriel get through this. Help our family survive this crisis," Ruth said, tears streaming down her face.

"Ruth, I'm sorry." Sophia cried, holding Ruth's hand tightly. "It's all my fault. Gabriel got hurt because of protecting me. I'm so sorry; it's because of me that he's like this."

If Gabriel hadn't risked his life to protect her, she might have been the one lying there, or worse, she might not have survived.

Ruth didn't know the details, but she could guess. Hearing Sophia's words, she didn't blame her at all.

It wasn't Sophia's fault that these things had happened.

Ruth gently patted Sophia on the head.

"Silly girl, this isn't your fault. I should thank you for helping him realize his true feelings, for letting him know who he loves and who he should protect."

"No matter if you and Gabriel get back together or not, I will only recognize you. It's his duty to protect you, even if it means getting hurt."

"Don't blame yourself. For Gabriel and the kids, be strong."

"The Lancaster family needs you now!"

Sophia, with tears streaming down her face, nodded. "Ruth, don't worry. I will take good care of the kids and manage the Lancaster family. I won't let anything happen to our family. You rest and recover. I believe Gabriel will be okay too."
