Chapter 767 Estrangement

'How could Clara be so unpredictable?' Alex wondered.

She looked so obedient, it was almost unbelievable.

"What do you want for breakfast?" Alex asked casually.

Clara smiled. "Anything."

Alex nodded slightly, then quickly freshened up and went out to buy breakfast.

In the morning, a nurse came to check on Clara and did a simple examination. Seeing that Alex hadn't returned, Clara called her parents.

"Clara, I'm flying back today. You got hurt and didn't tell me right away. I had to hear it from someone else." The woman said.

Clara quickly said, "Mom, you enjoy yourself. No need to rush back."

"Who's going to take care of you if I don't come back?"

"Someone is."

Clara's mom, Cynthia Wright, was silent for a couple of seconds and then asked, "Who?"

"Mrs. Lancaster arranged for someone to take care of me," Clara said hesitantly.

Cynthia sounded skeptical, "A man or a woman?"

"Doesn't matter if it's a man or a woman, I have someone to take care of me, and there's also a nurse. You just have fun, and tell Dad not to rush his work."

"Alright, but take care of yourself. If anything happens, call your uncle."

"Okay."

After hanging up, Clara saw that Alex still hadn't returned, so she prepared to text him.

Just then, Alex walked in, looking a bit strange.

"What did you buy?" Clara asked curiously.

Alex stood in front of her without moving. He had heard her entire phone conversation from outside and felt a strange. He had an uncomfortable feeling.

Seeing him standing still, Clara squinted her eyes slightly.

"What are you standing there for?" Clara asked.

Alex placed the breakfast on the table.

"I see you can move today. You can eat by yourself, right?" Alex said calmly.

Clara looked at him in confusion.

'Why does Alex seem so strange today?' Clara wondered.

He seemed more distant.

"I…"

"There's an important meeting at the office this morning," Alex glanced at his watch. "I'm running late. If you can't eat by yourself, have the nurse help you."

With that, he left.

As he passed by, a faint smell of alcohol lingered in the air.

She had smelled the alcohol on him last night and thought he had been drinking at a social event, so she didn't ask much, especially since she had been crying at the time.

Clara blinked twice.

'Could he have realized she was faking her tears to get him to come over last night?' Clara wondered.

Yet he stayed with her all night.

'Today is Sunday; there couldn't be a meeting. It was clearly an excuse. And such a poor excuse.' Clara thought.

Clara's heart sank.

She looked at the breakfast on the table and lost her appetite.

'Maybe Alex didn't like my type. Should I give up?' Clara thought in mind.

But giving up easily wasn't Clara's style.

Alex went home and took a shower. The water cascaded down his firm, toned muscles as he closed his eyes and tilted his head back, letting the water hit his face.

He realized he had developed feelings for Clara that he shouldn't have.

Reflecting on his unusual behavior over the past few days, it all started when he accidentally saw Clara fall in the bathroom at home. Clara was hospitalized, and it wasn't his place to take care of her, but he still agreed to Ruth's request.

In fact, just visiting Clara daily would have fulfilled Ruth's request.

There was no need for him to serve Clara meals, buy her food, or do her laundry.

If he rushed over yesterday afternoon fearing she might do something foolish, then what about last night?

Alex's heart pounded wildly.

Clara wasn't the kind of girl he could like.

In high society, families had to be well-matched. He and Clara weren't suitable, and Clara was wealthy. How could she possibly be interested in someone as poor as him?

While he could still control his feelings, he should give up sooner rather than later.

Alex wiped his face, his resolute expression turning blank.

Keith's suggestion might be worth considering.

In the morning, Alex worked from home and had dinner plans with Angela in the evening.

At 4:30 p.m., he left home.

Passing by a flower shop, Alex stopped the car.

After hesitating for a moment, he decided to buy a bouquet of flowers.

Since he decided to give up, he might as well be thorough.

Angela was an excellent woman and met his criteria for a partner. Their family backgrounds were similar. Angela had also come from a rural area and attended a prestigious university in City B, then stayed to develop her career.

Angela arrived earlier and sat by the window in the hall, wearing a black V-neck dress with a diamond necklace that accentuated her delicate collarbone.

She was already attractive, and her outfit made her even more eye-catching.

Alex saw her as soon as he walked in.

Angela's eyes lit up when she saw Alex holding a bouquet of flowers.

"I passed by a flower shop and thought these looked nice, so I got them for you," Alex said with a polite smile, looking very gentlemanly.

Angela accepted them. "Thank you."

"Sorry about yesterday, I…" Alex said.

"It's okay, you don't have to keep explaining. I understand."

Alex felt relieved and called the waiter to order.

"By the way, do you remember Keith?" Alex started a conversation.

"Yes, I heard he started a company, and it's doing well."

"Yeah, we were drinking together last night and talked about you."

"What did you say about me?"

"That you're very outstanding."

Alex and Angela didn't discuss work this time. Instead, they talked about classmates and school.

During the meal, Angela subtly expressed her interest in Alex, and Alex showed his appreciation for Angela.

They both understood each other's intentions and agreed to continue seeing each other.

"Are you interested in a musical?" Angela took out a ticket from her bag.

"When?"

"Next Wednesday evening, if you're not busy."

"Sure."

Alex accepted the ticket.

They had a pleasant meal, and this time Angela insisted on paying.

Alex felt helpless.

Clara lay alone in the hospital room, staring at the moonlight outside the window.

She wondered what Alex was doing now. 'Why has he suddenly become so distant? Should I just confess my feelings? But what if Alex rejects me? That would be so embarrassing.'

Clara picked up her phone and opened her chat with Alex.

Clara: [What's wrong with you today?]

She sent the message but didn't get a reply for a long time.

Clara was about to call him when Alex finally replied.

Alex: [Nothing, Miss Taylor. Do you need something?]

Clara: [If I need something, will you come?]

Alex: [I'm busy and can't leave. If you need anything, ask the nurse."

Clara deeply felt Alex's distance.

She felt uncomfortable and frustrated.

She wanted to send a message out of spite but ended up just replying: [Ok.]

After that day, Clara didn't text or call Alex for a week, and Alex didn't visit the hospital again.
