Chapter 184 Stirring the Hornet's Nest

Sophia tapped her forehead. "Got it, go finish up the leftover food in the kitchen."
Caroline muttered, "I'm just in a bad mood; I’m not sick. To think I was served such bland food; what I need is hearty meals, I need to turn this grief into appetite."
‘What a strange girl...’ Sophia thought.
At the old Lancaster family estate, Simon hurried back from outside, eager to find Madam first thing.
Madam was resting in her room when Betty came in to announce his arrival.
Hearing that Simon was looking for her, Madam quickly asked him to come in.
"Is there news?" Madam's eyes were filled with anticipation as she looked at Simon.
Simon suddenly felt a great pressure.
But this time... it should be good news, right?
Swallowing hard, Simon nodded and took a breath before speaking, "I went to the hospital where the young mistress gave birth, found nothing, and finally, I went to the crematorium where the cremation took place that year."
Madam had seen the bodies of one adult and two children at the hospital, and unable to bear the shock, she fainted. When she woke up, the crematorium staff came to get her signature for the cremation. Lost in her grief, she signed without fully understanding, and afterwards, they presented her with an urn of ashes.
Simon took a deep breath, making Madam so anxious she felt like hitting him.
"There's a record of the cremation at the crematorium, but I asked an old man who has been cleaning there for ten years, and he said that nobody was cremated that day."
Madam's slumped shoulders straightened up at once.
Nobody was cremated? What did that mean...
Betty, worried, called out, "Madam."
Madam stared intently at Simon, "Are you sure the old man didn't remember it wrong?"
What if the old man's memory was failing him, and she was getting happy for no reason?
Simon said, "He insists he remembers clearly because he had left early that day and got clipped by a car on his way home. The driver compensated him quite a sum."
Madam's heart was revived.
"They must still be alive." Tears welled up in her eyes as she murmured these words.
Ethan and Emma must be those two children, descendants of their Lancaster family. As for why the paternity test results showed otherwise, that remained to be investigated.
"Did you find out where they went afterwards?" Madam's voice trembled.
"No, it's been five years, so it’s very difficult to trace, and many tracks have been erased."
"It's okay, keep looking, take your time."
As long as they were confirmed to be alive, it would only be a matter of time before they were found.
But wait, if the two children were alive, could Sophia still be alive?
No cremation, yet there was a record, and the switched paternity results, all signs pointed to someone manipulating everything from the shadows.
Madam shuddered at the thought, could Sophia still be alive?
Could it be that the villain only took the two children?
And Sophia... was she harmed?
Madam trembled all over, she couldn't bear to think further; she could only urge Simon to investigate quickly.
Betty was very worried about Madam's health, wondering if she should report to Gabriel.
Madam read Betty's thoughts.
"Don't tell Gabriel about this yet, and there's nothing wrong with my health. Don't make a fuss."
Right now, everything was just speculation. To avoid putting the children in danger, she had to be discreet. No one could reveal anything.
Not even Gabriel.
Lest they stir the hornet's nest.
Vincent discovered that someone had come to the hospital inquiring about the circumstances of Sophia's childbirth from years ago. Concerned that someone might mean harm to Sophia, he immediately called her after his surgery was finished.
"Vincent, thank you. I've got it; I'll be careful." Sophia replied.
Vincent wanted to say more but found that there was nothing left to say.
"Let me know if you need any help."
After hanging up the phone, Sophia rested her chin on her hands, deep in thought.
Who would be digging into the events of her childbirth from years ago?
Knowing that she was still alive, yet still investigating—could it be that Gabriel suspected the identities of Ethan and Emma?
But he hadn't even met Ethan and Emma, so how could he start suspecting?
Or perhaps... had she inadvertently given herself away?
Sophia anxiously ran her fingers through her hair.
No panic. First, she had to see if Gabriel knew anything. What if it wasn’t Gabriel who was investigating?
When leaving the house in the morning, Sophia had specifically instructed the two children not to engage with any unfamiliar people trying to chat with them and to wear masks immediately after leaving kindergarten, among other things.
This series of instructions left Ethan and Emma puzzled, giving them the strange feeling that they were about to embark on a long journey.
"Don't worry, Mommy; we'll be careful not to let the bad guys find us."
Emma kissed her mommy's cheek, and Ethan followed with a kiss of his own.
Sophia hugged the two children tightly.
If they were really exposed, it was too late to run now; it was better to face the situation head-on. No matter what, she couldn't let Gabriel take the children away.
After sending the children onto the school bus and returning home, she found that Caroline had also dressed up neatly.
"Are you going out today?" Sophia asked.
Caroline had put on makeup, applied a cold compress early in the morning, and with the effects of the makeup, her eyes no longer looked red or swollen, and she seemed in good spirits.
"Yeah, I missed yesterday's class, so I need to make it up for the kids today."
"Then you..."
"Don't worry. Even if I wanted to get back at those two, I wouldn't take it out on a child. At most, I'll just ignore her."
Sophia chuckled, "I'm just worried you'll get upset when you see her. Don't make a scene in class now."
Caroline snorted, flipping her hair, "I won't make a scene in class. I'm a violinist; I've even done tours, nothing will go wrong."
"Okay, I believe you."
The two friends chatted and then went off to work.
Caroline arrived at the kindergarten, prepared for the class briefly, and when it was time for her violin class, she entered the classroom as usual, with a gentle smile.
"Hello, everyone."
The children called out in their sweet voices, "Hello, Miss Caroline!"
Caroline's gaze inadvertently swept over Josie, feeling a tinge of complexity.
She had quite liked Josie, who showed talent in violin, and she had considered taking her as an apprentice.
But now, to teach the daughter of her enemy... Forget it!
She just couldn't be that magnanimous.
In this class, Caroline started letting the children touch the violin. They lined up to practice a short segment one by one. Emma completed it with ease, Sam didn’t find it too difficult, and Ethan managed to produce a melody. When it was Josie's turn, she took the violin from Caroline with a naive and joyful smile.
She did as well as Emma, who had attended training classes and practiced at home with Caroline's guidance. Josie, who started learning later than Emma, could play as well as Emma, which showed that Josie truly had a gift for the violin.
After Josie finished, she looked up at Caroline expectantly, waiting for praise.
She tilted her little face upwards, her eyes sparkling with life, causing Caroline's heart to stir.
Caroline nodded solemnly in acknowledgment, then promptly moved on, "Next..."
Josie returned to her seat, disappointed.
