Chapter 596 Caught

A Maserati was cruising down a country road, and Nicholas, chilling in the back seat, put down his tablet.

"How much longer, man?"

Sharpe glanced at the GPS. "About half an hour, give or take."

They were supposed to hit the hotel by 8 PM, but the GPS went haywire and led them to this middle-of-nowhere spot.

Sharpe was stressing out big time.

He had to pull over and double-check the GPS to make sure they were on the right track.

Just as he was about to fire up the engine again, someone darted into the headlights.

The dude was stumbling and running towards them, looking all kinds of messed up.

Sharpe's heart skipped a beat. 'Is this some kind of scam?'

'Nicholas is already pissed about being late, and another delay is gonna make him lose it,' he thought.

But the road was a one-way street, so dodging the guy was a no-go, and turning around would just mess them up even more.

Sharpe thought, 'Wait, is someone chasing him? Oh, crap!!'

"Mr. Lancaster, that guy looks like Mr. Wolf!"

Nicholas looked up and saw Daniel, clear as day in the headlights, stumbling towards them.

"Go check it out!"

Sharpe jumped out of the car.

The guy chasing Daniel had a stick and was about to catch up when he saw Sharpe getting out.

The chaser froze, not sure what to do next.

Daniel finally reached Sharpe, tripping and falling in front of him.

He grabbed Sharpe's hand. "Help me!"

"Mr. Wolf, get in the car, quick."

Hearing Sharpe's voice, Daniel realized he was Nicholas's assistant.

He used his last bit of strength to climb into the car.

Seeing this, the attacker charged forward with the stick.

Sharpe shrugged off his suit jacket, tossed it onto the hood, and got ready to throw down. As the stick swung at him, he dodged and landed a punch.

The moves he learned from Charles paid off.

He actually managed to knock the guy down.

Given the middle-of-nowhere location, taking him to the cops wasn't an option.

Sharpe decided to knock him out, snapped a few pics, and called the police.

Not knowing if there were more bad guys around, he quickly got back in the car.

Nicholas yelled, "Get to the nearest hospital!"

"On it, boss!"

The car had a faint smell of blood. Daniel was hurt.

This time, the GPS worked like a charm, leading them to a small nearby hospital.

The cops showed up before the attacker woke up and nabbed him.

Two hours later, Daniel was lying weakly on a hospital bed, his head and hands all bandaged up.

Nicholas was right there with him.

"Mr. Wolf, what the heck happened?"

Daniel's face was pale.

"I went to City H for work. After getting off the plane, I grabbed a random taxi. Didn't expect the driver to take advantage of me falling asleep and drive me out to the sticks."

"I got knocked out, but woke up when he dragged me out of the car. Got hurt trying to fight back and escape, then I ran into you guys."

Daniel almost thought he was a goner.

He couldn't figure out who'd want to mess with him, since he hadn't pissed anyone off.

Plus, this was a secret trip only his family knew about. Even if someone wanted to hurt or extort him, they wouldn't have had enough time to set it all up.

"If the driver was just acting on impulse, he wasn't after my wallet. I offered him everything I had."

Daniel was baffled about what the driver wanted.

'Could it be a serial killer?' Just thinking about it made his head throb.

Nicholas said slowly, "You should get some rest. We'll figure it all out after the police interrogation tomorrow."

Daniel nodded, "Yeah, thanks. That's all we can do for now."

Luckily, they caught the guy.

Otherwise, all his suffering would have been for nothing.

Given the situation, Daniel couldn't rush to meet Saskia.

After he dozed off, Nicholas wheeled himself out of the ward.

Sharpe came over with some documents.

"All the paperwork's done, and I've got a caregiver set up to stay here. Mr. Lancaster, I'll take you to the hotel to rest."

"Alright."

At the hospital entrance, Nicholas suddenly said, "Send someone to City H."

Daniel went to City H to dig up clues about his daughter's whereabouts. He must've found something and rushed there.

Nicholas thought, 'Someone got wind of Daniel heading to City H and tried to stop him. If they couldn't stop Daniel, whoever's behind this will just try something else.'

Nicholas needed to stay ahead of the game and prepare; otherwise, Caroline might be in danger too.

Nicholas pulled out his phone to call Caroline but, seeing it was already 1 AM, decided to text instead.

Nicholas: [Daniel's hurt. I think whoever's behind this is getting desperate. Be super careful at home - no going out or meeting anyone until I'm back.]

Even after sending the message, he still felt uneasy.

"Send some people from The Watson Villa to protect Caroline and Josie."

Sharpe nodded, "Yes, sir!"

Caroline tossed and turned all night, haunted by bad dreams she couldn't quite remember in the morning.

She instinctively grabbed her phone and saw Nicholas's message, making her heart race with worry.

She typed for a while on her phone.

In the end, she only sent one sentence.

Caroline: [Be careful.]

Nicholas got her message as soon as he arrived at the hotel, having only slept for four hours. A smile slowly spread across his face.

Her concern always lifted his spirits.

Nicholas replied: [Got it.]

After breakfast, Nicholas headed to the hospital to check on Daniel.

After a night of rest and IV fluids, Daniel felt much better, and the weakness had faded.

He was just getting dressed, ready to be discharged.

"The doc said you need to be observed for a couple more days," Nicholas reminded.

Daniel said, "No need. I got important stuff to handle. I'll do a check-up in City B after I'm done."

He thought, 'Nothing's more important than finding my daughter.'

Nicholas pressed his lips together.

He had promised Caroline not to spill the beans to Daniel, but he also couldn't stop Daniel from seeking the truth.

"Let's hit the police station first." Daniel thought it over and decided he needed to clear up last night's mess.

Nicholas nodded.

Sharpe drove them to the police station.

After a thorough grilling, the driver spilled the beans.

"A guy came up to me and handed me some cash, told me to knock him out and take him to a remote spot."

"If that's the case," the cops pressed, "why'd you use a knife?"

"The guy gave me the knife and said I could use it if he fought back, as long as I didn't kill him."

"Who was that guy?"

"I don't know him."
