Chapter 661 The Heir
Aragorn's face turned stormy the moment Nicholas walked in and contradicted him in front of everyone.
"I have only one son, and Daisy is your wife," he stressed, his eyes narrowing dangerously as he glared at Caroline standing next to Nicholas.
"Today is our family gathering, Miss Clark. What are you doing here?"
Aragorn's tone was dripping with hostility.
Caroline had felt uneasy since she walked in.
Old, painful memories came flooding back, making her want to turn and leave.
But she held her ground and walked in with Nicholas.
Aragorn was giving her the stink eye, but Caroline didn't back down. She stood tall, looking poised and graceful.
Compared to Daisy, who was bending over backward to please Daniel and Linda, Caroline looked like a noble princess, while Daisy seemed like a desperate servant, pitiful and lowly.
Seeing Caroline so stunning and composed, Daisy's jealousy flared up.
"Caroline." Before Caroline could say anything, Daniel and Linda walked over.
Aragorn noticed how Daniel was treating Caroline more kindly than Daisy, and Linda's tone was almost deferential. Aragorn was floored.
"I thought you weren't coming," Linda said, wanting to touch Caroline but holding Trevor, so she just smiled cautiously.
"Of course, I had to come. If I didn't, wouldn't I keep getting accused of being Nicholas's mistress?"
Hearing Caroline's words, Linda's eyes immediately shot daggers at Daisy.
Linda cursed inwardly, 'Caroline has been through so much over the years, taking all the blame because of Daisy's lies!'
Daniel also gave Daisy a frosty look.
Daisy trembled all over, glaring angrily at Caroline.
"Don't talk nonsense. I have a marriage contract with Nicholas. We grew up together and were a couple. If it weren't for you, my marriage would be happy, and Nicholas wouldn't deny Trevor."
"Marriage contract?" Linda scoffed.
Before Caroline could react, Linda handed Trevor to Gummidge, who had just come out of the kitchen, and then stood in front of Caroline, glaring coldly at Daisy.
"If it weren't for your scheming mother kidnapping my daughter, the one with the marriage contract with Nicholas would be my daughter, and you are just a fraud!"
Linda stood up for Caroline, not letting anyone push her around anymore.
Seeing Linda's slightly frail back, Caroline felt a rush of warmth and sadness.
Aragorn frowned, confused by the whole situation.
Seeing Daisy's pitiful look, Aragorn said, "Linda, this marriage is already settled. Besides, Diana doesn't like Nicholas; she likes Paul, right?"
He had seen Diana's looks at Paul before; he couldn't be wrong. Diana liked Paul.
If Diana could marry Paul, it would be a great help to Paul, and Paul's mother would have a better life abroad.
"By the way, where is Diana? How much longer until she arrives? Paul, call Diana and pick her up." Aragorn immediately wanted to set up Paul and Diana.
"No need," Daniel said in a deep voice. "Our daughter is already here."
"Then let her in."
"She is already in."
Daisy's face grew even paler.
Aragorn looked around in confusion but didn't see Diana. A bad feeling suddenly crept over him.
He looked at Daniel, totally baffled. "Where's Diana?"
"Caroline is my and Linda's daughter, Diana Wolf."
Daniel's words hit like a sledgehammer.
Aragorn stiffened, unable to believe it.
"What did you say? How could Caroline be your daughter? Are you mistaken? Isn't your daughter Diana?"
Aragorn panicked, thinking, 'This has to be a joke; Daniel must be messing with me.'
"We were indeed mistaken. Caroline is our daughter," Daniel clarified.
Hearing this, Aragorn let out a sigh of relief, thinking, 'How could someone like Caroline be the heir to the Wolfs?'
He was about to talk to Daniel and then kick Caroline out, but Daniel's next words made him feel utterly uncomfortable.
"Diana Scott is not my daughter. Mia brought her in to replace my real daughter Caroline to keep me from finding her. Mia even bribed human traffickers to abduct and almost kill Caroline." Daniel laid out the truth.
Aragorn's hand holding the cane trembled, his body swayed, and his chest ached faintly.
His expression was a mix of shock and confusion, his mouth opened as if to speak, but it seemed something was stuck in his throat, and he couldn't say anything.
Gummidge was also in disbelief.
She thought, 'Caroline has become the heir to the Wolfs? Unbelievable.'
"How could this be? Are you sure there's no mistake this time?" Aragorn still couldn't wrap his head around it.
'How could Caroline be the heir to the Wolfs!' Aragorn brooded.
Daniel's expression was serious, with a hint of displeasure.
"This time, there is no mistake. Mia has confessed her crimes. Caroline is my biological daughter, the heir to the Wolfs!" Daniel raised his voice, completely shattering Aragorn's hope.
"Honey!" Gummidge, seeing Aragorn about to collapse, wanted to support him but was holding Trevor.
Fortunately, Paul moved quickly and supported Aragorn.
"Uncle Aragorn, now that Caroline is the heir to the Wolfs, she should be worthy of the Watsons, right?" Paul's words dripped with sarcasm.
He was mocking Aragorn.
Aragorn was so mad, he thought he was going to explode, clutching his chest and gasping for air.
"No, now even if the Watsons cling to her, Caroline probably won't care," Paul said proudly, raising his chin.
Aragorn squeezed out the words through gritted teeth, "Shut up!"
"Fine, I'll shut up. Uncle, you must take care of yourself and first kick out this imposter Daisy."
Aragorn wanted to strangle Paul.
Caroline couldn't help but want to laugh seeing Aragorn, who always treated her like she was nothing, looking so down. But seeing Nicholas, she held back.
Nicholas looked up at her.
"If you want to laugh, just laugh."
He wanted to laugh too. He wanted to see how much Aragorn would regret it.
Even if he was unfilial, he felt genuinely relieved.
Aragorn, recalling everything he had done to Caroline, suddenly wanted to faint but couldn't.
Now he only hoped Daniel didn't know what he had done.
Hearing Paul's words, Daisy shook her head violently.
"I am not an imposter. The marriage was arranged by the elders. It's mine. I am the one with the marriage contract with Nicholas."
This was Daisy's only shot. As long as she held on, there was hope.
