Chapter 589 Evidence
Nurses were hustling in and out, delivering plasma, and after what felt like forever, the doc finally came out and said Celeste was out of the woods, at least for now.
They wheeled Celeste off to the ICU.
Sophia jumped up and bolted to the ICU, with Gabriel hot on her heels.
They couldn't go in, just had to watch Celeste from a distance, and they couldn't stick around for long.
Sophia pressed herself against the glass, tears streaming down her face.
"Grandma, you gotta hang in there."
Sophia was beating herself up inside, 'Why didn't I move faster? I could've pulled Celeste away, stopped her from taking that knife for me.'
She wished it was her in that bed, not her frail grandma.
Jennifer came over. "The doc said it didn't hit any vital organs. But Celeste is old and lost a lot of blood, so it's serious."
"Don't worry, your grandma will wake up."
"Okay," Sophia choked out.
When the nurse came to shoo them away, everyone left the ICU.
Gabriel adjusted Sophia's slipping coat, placing his hands on her shoulders. They were super close, and his voice was gentle but firm.
"Celeste wouldn't want to leave you, so you gotta believe she'll pull through."
Sophia nodded, tears in her eyes.
Jake was nearby, fists clenched.
"Sophia, you need to rest. Don't let Celeste wake up and see you all worn out and worry about you."
His words hit home, and Sophia realized her clothes were soaked in Celeste's blood.
Jake said, "I'll take you home."
Gabriel took Sophia's hand assertively. "Let's go, we're going home."
Jake's heart sank. His raised hand froze, and he stopped in his tracks.
Sophia, lost in her sorrow, didn't notice a thing.
Colin showed up later, supporting Jennifer as they walked behind.
Jennifer's face was full of worry, and Colin, despite his own concerns, noticed the tension between Jake and Gabriel.
If he remembered right, that was Jake, the CEO of Micro Circuit Group.
Micro Circuit Group and the Lancaster Group were rivals.
Gabriel and Jake...
Sophia got into Gabriel's car, and Jake could only stand outside watching, his heart burning with rage.
'Sophia is mine, mine! How could Gabriel hurt her and then get her back?' His mind screamed in frustration.
Colin handed Jake his coat.
"Mr. Hughes, thanks for your coat."
Jake snapped back to reality and smiled at Colin. "No problem. Sophia and I are really close. She always treats me like family, so her family is my family."
Colin gave a faint smile, nodded, and then got back into the car.
Jake watched them leave, fists clenched tightly.
Sophia working at the Lancaster Manor gave Gabriel a lot of advantages. Jake was really scared, scared that Sophia would fall for Gabriel again.
'That can't happen!' Jake thought.
On the way, Sophia spoke hoarsely, "Take me back to the Blackwood Manor."
In her current state, she couldn't go back to the Lancaster Manor. Ruth would be worried, and she didn't want her three kids to know.
Gabriel said, "Okay."
Colin's car followed closely behind. After dropping Jennifer off, he immediately went back to the hospital to keep watch.
Sophia took a shower and changed her clothes. When she came out, she saw Gabriel sitting in the living room. She walked over.
"The Kelly Group murder case..." she started but then hesitated.
Gabriel knew exactly what she was getting at.
"Colin and I have been digging into your dad's case for years. Turns out, Peter wasn't killed by your dad; the real killer is someone else."
"We've been on this for a long time, but we couldn't nail down solid proof. We could only guess and suspect Logan."
"I talked to Peter's family and found out from his daughter that Peter and Logan were tight back then."
"The supplier of those crappy building materials skipped town and vanished. But recently, my guys found him in Municity. We got his address, and I think we can get him to spill soon."
Sophia said, "Even so, there's not enough evidence for the cops to make an arrest, right?"
"There is!"
Gabriel pulled out his phone and showed Sophia some photos he had taken.
Sophia took the phone, looking puzzled. As she read, her hands started to shake, her face turning from confusion to grief and anger, tears welling up again.
"Ethan and I cracked open that metal box. Inside were documents proving Logan, the supplier, and Peter's conspiracy."
Given the mess back then, even if it couldn't clear Francis completely, it would at least get a retrial. Once they found direct evidence, they could definitely prove Logan killed Peter.
Sophia's throat felt tight, and she opened her mouth but couldn't get any words out.
"There's also a letter." Gabriel pulled a letter from his suit pocket.
The paper had a faint musty smell and some black mold spots.
Sophia unfolded it.
It was Susan's final letter to her.
Back then, Susan had only left a note for Sophia before jumping from the top of the Kelly Group building.
So everyone thought Susan had jumped because she missed Francis.
In the letter, Susan explained how she found out Francis had been framed and how the Browns had forced her hand.
[My daughter Sophia, please forgive me for protecting you this way. If the Browns don't keep their promise, remember to seek shelter with the Lancasters.]
[Ruth from the Lancasters is a good person. She likes you a lot. Even if you can't become part of the Lancasters, they won't abandon you.]
[If you see this letter and the Browns have become even more powerful, I hope you live a healthy and safe life and don't provoke them.]
[If you have enough strength to protect yourself, I hope you can clear your father's name.]
[Sophia, nothing is more important than your life. Mom loves you, and I'm sure your dad would love you too. Remember, you must live well first.]
Sophia read the letter, tears streaming down and smudging the paper.
'Mom had suffered so much alone,' Sophia thought.
The Browns, it was the Browns that drove Susan to her death.
Susan had found evidence to clear Francis but was forced by the Browns.
In the end, Susan was pushed to jump.
Sophia mused, 'I, unfilial as I am, had actually thought Mom had jumped to follow Dad.'
At first, she had even resented Susan for leaving her alone.
Sophia clutched the papers and cried out in pain.
Gabriel's heart ached. He reached out and held Sophia's slender back, and she leaned into his chest.
Sophia's tears quickly soaked his shirt.
