Chapter 400 Maybe Not in Love Anymore
Caroline felt a pang of distress. Josie's hands were so thin, unlike Emma's chubby ones. Josie was just too skinny.
Once Caroline got out of the hospital, she planned to fatten Josie up a bit.
Josie tilted her head and noticed Nicholas peeking from outside.
"Daddy."
Nicholas was caught red-handed by Josie.
A flash of embarrassment crossed his handsome face.
He pushed the door open and walked in.
Probably feeling guilty, he avoided looking at Caroline and focused on Josie, unsure of what to say.
Finally, he managed, "Josie, it's time to go."
'Already? Not even half an hour and Josie has to leave?' Caroline thought, feeling reluctant.
Josie didn't want to leave either, but she was always obedient. She waved, "Mommy, I'm leaving now. I'll come see you next time."
Caroline felt a deep sadness, but the hospital was full of germs, and she didn't want Josie to get sick. She forced a smile and waved.
"When I'm better, I'll take you out to play. Think about what you want to do; your wishes are always valid."
Josie nodded earnestly. "Goodbye, Mommy."
"Goodbye, Josie."
Nicholas didn't really want to leave, but he still said it. He reluctantly took Josie away.
After leaving the ward, he felt a bit hesitant.
He turned to look at the ward door again.
"Daddy?" Josie called out, confused by his hesitation.
Nicholas snapped back to reality, raised his hand to signal, and Charles pushed him away, with Josie following on her short legs.
After Nicholas returned to the country, Charles immediately resumed his job.
Now that Nicholas and Daisy were married, he didn't dare to tell Nicholas about that incident.
'It was just one accident; nothing should happen, right?' Charles thought.
"Charles!"
Seeing that Nicholas was about to be pushed down the steps, he spoke coldly.
Charles snapped back to reality, realizing he almost pushed Nicholas down the steps, and quickly stepped back in fright.
"Sorry, Mr. Watson, I..." He wanted to explain but was too tongue-tied.
Nicholas frowned. "If you have something to say, just say it."
"Mr. Watson, I..."
"If you don't want to say it, just do your job properly." Nicholas didn't need to know, but he noticed Charles had been distracted lately.
"Yes!"
Charles decided he would never reveal this matter in his lifetime.
Otherwise, he would hurt not only Nicholas, who had been kind to him, but also Daisy.
"You take Josie home."
Nicholas had to go to the company, which was in a different direction from home, so he let Charles take Josie home first while he waited for Sharpe to come and pick him up.
Charles was a bit worried. "I'll wait with you until Sharpe arrives."
"No need."
Charles had no choice but to take Josie and leave first.
Sharpe was still stuck in traffic. Nicholas pressed the remote control of his wheelchair, turned around, and went back to the hospital.
Caroline sat in a wheelchair, ready to go for rehabilitation.
As soon as she went out, she met Nicholas' cold eyes.
Two people in wheelchairs looked at each other.
An indescribable feeling swept through their hearts.
Nicholas gripped the wheelchair's armrest, his voice hoarse. "Where are you going?"
"Where I go is none of your business." Caroline coldly turned her head to take a detour.
She wasn't used to using a wheelchair, and her turning movements were a bit clumsy. Compared to Nicholas' smart wheelchair, hers was manual and required effort.
Just as Caroline turned in the right direction, Nicholas maneuvered to block her path again.
Caroline's eyes flared with anger. "What do you want?"
Nicholas hesitated. It had been a long time since he had seen such an expressive look on Caroline's face. A rush of blood surged through him.
He blurted out, "Don't you want to see Josie? I can bring her to see you every day from now on."
Caroline felt a surge of joy but then eyed him suspiciously. "Really?"
She thought, 'Would Nicholas be so kind? Could he have another scheme?'
"If you stay with me, you can see Josie anytime you want."
At that moment, Caroline felt she no longer had the strength to be angry. Her heart felt like it was being cut by a thousand knives, bringing a fine pain. She even felt a low hum in her brain. She wanted to laugh but couldn't.
Nicholas looked at Caroline with anticipation, his cold eyes filled with hope. As long as she was willing to come back to him, he would pretend nothing had happened before. From then on, they could be a happy family of three.
He thought, 'Caroline, you can't refuse me anymore. This is really the last time, the last time I would beg you. Say yes!'
During Caroline's silence, Nicholas felt extremely nervous and tormented. Even when he first confessed to her, it wasn't as agonizing as this moment. He still clearly remembered that when he confessed to Caroline, she was also silent with a blank expression, then suddenly smiled and told him, "I do!" At that time, he was so scared by her expression that he didn't know how to react. She was too mischievous.
Caroline's thumb dug into the wheelchair's armrest, which was very hard, and her nails hurt from the pressure. After a long time, she still looked very cold, her voice even more frigid.
"Using your own daughter, Nicholas, you are despicable to the extreme. I will never be with someone as despicable as you again. Give up."
'Nicholas' plan is really good. His wife is Daisy, and I would be his mistress?' she thought. Caroline sneered. Her heart hurt so much that it had become numb. She didn't know how many times she regretted ever falling in love with Nicholas.
Hearing Caroline's words, Nicholas's face turned pale bit by bit, and his chest felt so tight that he had trouble breathing. "What did I do to make you hate me so much?"
"You know very well what you did!" Caroline was full of thorns, her eyes as sharp as needles. "I am Josie's mother. I have the right to see Josie, even the right to raise her. Nicholas, you and Daisy can't keep Josie locked up forever!"
Caroline couldn't understand what signal she had given Nicholas that made him persistently seek her as a mistress. Was it just because she was his ex-girlfriend?
Nicholas watched Caroline turn her wheelchair and clumsily roll away with a pained look. He just wanted her to come back to him. Why was it so hard?
When Sharpe arrived, he saw Nicholas with his head down, looking very dejected. He was surprised. It was the first time he had seen Nicholas like this. He didn't know if he should approach Nicholas.
"Sharpe."
Hearing Nicholas call him, Sharpe quickly walked up. "Why do you think she keeps refusing to reconcile with me?"
Sharpe was puzzled. How would he know? He didn't even know Nicholas and Caroline had been together before.
"Maybe because she doesn't love you anymore?"
"Doesn't love me?" Thinking that Caroline didn't love him anymore, Nicholas felt heartbroken even more, and his eyes quickly turned red, filled with bloodshot veins.
Sharpe immediately felt a different aura from Nicholas. Did he say something wrong?
