Chapter 682 Humility
The food had just hit the table when Melissa's phone rang.
After she hung up, Melissa walked over looking all apologetic. "I gotta run, something urgent came up. Caroline, I've explained everything. Just go through these documents, okay?"
Caroline stood up. "Aren't you gonna eat something before you go?"
Melissa shook her head. "No, you guys go ahead. I really have to leave."
She grabbed her bag in a hurry and shot Nicholas a quick glance. He gave a barely-there nod.
Caroline watched Melissa leave the restaurant, then sat back down, feeling a bit helpless as she looked at the spread of delicious food. Too bad Melissa couldn't stick around to enjoy it.
Now it was just her, Nicholas, and Josie.
"Let's dig in," Nicholas said, serving Caroline some food before helping Josie.
For some reason, Caroline felt a bit weird. 'How did this turn into a family dinner?' she thought.
During the meal, Caroline and Nicholas didn't say much. Afterward, Nicholas offered to drive her home.
Caroline remembered Daniel had said he'd come to pick her up.
She glanced at Nicholas, then at Josie, who was whispering to him. Finally, she couldn't help it and sent Daniel a message.
Caroline: [I'll head back later. No need to pick me up.]
Daniel replied quickly: [Are you with Nicholas?]
Caroline: [Yeah.]
She saw the chat window showing "typing..." a few times, but Daniel didn't send anything for a while.
Just as she was about to send another message, Daniel finally sent an "ok."
Caroline replied with a "cute" emoji.
It took over forty minutes to get from the restaurant to The Wolf Mansion. Once in the car, Josie insisted on sitting by the door, leaving Caroline a bit helpless.
Ten minutes in, Josie fell asleep on Caroline's lap.
Nicholas suddenly pulled out a document and handed it to Caroline.
She took it, puzzled, and glanced at it.
"What is this?"
Her eyes widened. It was a share certificate, and she was the shareholder.
'What's going on?' Caroline wondered.
Nicholas explained, "I registered a new company in your name. From now on, you're my boss."
Caroline's eyes widened even more.
Nicholas continued, "My entire team has been transferred to the new company, which is now officially operational. The next drug we develop will be released by the new company."
"Other procedures are also underway, and patents will be applied for in the name of the new company."
"Annual dividends will be directly deposited into your account."
"Wait," Caroline interrupted.
Nicholas stopped, looking at her with confusion and innocence.
He was a bit nervous, his hands clenched into fists on his lap, looking somewhat obedient.
Caroline was flustered and mused, 'How do I suddenly end up with a company? What's he trying to do?'
"Why are you giving me a company?"
Nicholas's eyes deepened. He took a deep breath and slightly turned his head, not daring to look at Caroline.
He thought, 'Could I say I'm afraid she would leave?'
After a long while, Nicholas swallowed and said hoarsely, "What's mine is yours. I'm just making it official."
Caroline's heart pounded rhythmically.
She was stunned by that.
After a while, Caroline handed the document back to him. "I don't want it."
Nicholas's expression immediately changed.
"Why?"
'Does she still want to leave? Is she still unwilling to accept me?' he wondered.
Nicholas felt a sharp pain, as if something was gnawing at him.
Caroline looked serious. "You built your team with so much effort. It's not fair for me to just take advantage of your hard work without lifting a finger."
She had heard a lot about Nicholas from Paul and Sharpe, about how he had carried the entire Watson Group on his back for years. The struggles he went through were unimaginable.
Even though she was tempted—who wouldn't want to be rich?—she felt a bit heartbroken thinking about all Nicholas had endured.
Nicholas shook his head gently. "My whole life, it's always been about you. If I don't have you, who am I making all this money for? And our daughter—if you have money, doesn't that mean Josie has money too?"
"Caroline, I don't know if another Daisy will come along to mess things up between us. I really don't want us to be separated again."
"We have a lot of issues to work through, but there's no rush. We can sort them out eventually."
"If you're unhappy, you can leave with the money."
"Caroline." Nicholas's voice grew more emotional. He took her hand and placed it on his chest, his shoulders slumping.
"Please don't leave me again. I can't go through another six years without you."
Nicholas had lived in pain for six years, filled with misunderstanding and emptiness.
Caroline's nose tingled, and her eyes welled up, blurring her vision.
Her heart had always belonged to Nicholas. Even during those six years of resentment, she never forgot him. In her dreams, she would call out "Nicholas."
She was used to hiding everything in her heart, but after returning to the country, she couldn't control herself when she saw him.
There were too many obstacles and misunderstandings between them.
She thought, 'Sophia was right; maybe I could be a bit more carefree. After all, I love Nicholas, not the Watson family.'
Caroline took a deep breath and said with a heavy nasal tone, "Is there anything else besides this company?"
Nicholas was stunned for a second, then immediately pulled out another document.
"These are the details of all my assets over the years."
Nicholas didn't hesitate to show his determination.
He wanted to give all his money to Caroline, so that when he was completely broke, he could cling to her and beg for her to take him in.
Sharpe, who was driving, shook his head at Nicholas's humble demeanor.
The asset details were extensive, making Caroline dizzy. She skimmed through a page and then skipped to the total value, which left her stunned.
'Nicholas has probably been rolling in dough!' she screamed in her heart.
Considering he could make it to the billionaire list and was known as the leader of the pharmaceutical industry, it wasn't surprising that Nicholas had so many assets.
Caroline thought, 'I'm going to be rich; I'm going to be a wealthy woman.'
When they arrived at The Wolf Manor, Caroline got out of the car with a smile, looking particularly happy.
Nicholas also got out of the car.
"Caroline." Daniel and Linda approached to check on her.
"You've lost weight," Linda said with concern.
Caroline said, "Not at all. I've gained a few pounds."
After playing for half a month, she had actually gained weight.
Daniel asked Clayton to carry the sleeping Josie.
When he saw Nicholas, Daniel's smile disappeared.
After Linda and Caroline went inside, Daniel stopped Nicholas from entering.
"It's late, Mr. Watson. You should go home and rest."
Nicholas remained silent.
He had managed to appease Caroline but forgot about fuming Daniel.
And Linda, and Clayton.
Nicholas thought, 'Clayton would be easier to deal with.'
