Chapter 550 At the Eye of the Storm

Clayton let out a big ol' sigh of relief and grabbed Daisy's hand. "Daisy, you're the best."

"Clayton, can you promise me you'll never see Caroline again?"

Clayton's heart took a nosedive. 'Daisy's still hung up on that.'

He nodded fast. "Okay, I promise."

After calming Clayton down, Daisy, with her pregnant belly, waddled out. She stood upstairs, looking at the buzz downstairs, watching people kiss up to Daniel, and seeing Diana soak in the envious stares from the rich ladies.

Everything Diana had now used to be hers.

Back in the day, during New Year visits, these socialites would tag along with their parents and be super jealous of Daisy 'cause she was the only daughter of the Wolfs, spoiled rotten and decked out in fancy clothes and bling.

Linda loved showing her off to these ladies too.

Now, Linda had Diana, the goody-two-shoes, fake Diana.

'If Linda ever finds out Caroline's her real daughter, would she still be grinning like that?' Daisy thought, her mind racing.

Suddenly, a sharp pain hit her belly.

Daisy's face twisted.

This pain was different, coming in waves, like she was about to pop.

'But ain't I still a month away from my due date?' Daisy wondered.

She quickly grabbed the railing and headed downstairs.

"Mom, Aunt Linda," Daisy called out weakly.

Everyone downstairs was chatting and laughing, and no one heard her.

Finally, Mia saw Daisy on the stairs, looking like she was about to keel over.

Daisy was rushed to the hospital.

Aragorn and Gummidge bolted to the hospital as soon as they got the call.

The Watsons and the Wolfs all waited outside the delivery room.

Mia was pacing, all anxious.

Daniel looked around and asked, "Where's Michael?"

Mia's face darkened. "I don't know."

Daniel got the hint and stepped aside with a scowl to call Michael.

Diana stayed glued to Linda's side. She knew a bit about Daisy's situation.

She felt disgusted; Nicholas didn't even like Daisy, yet Daisy still had a kid for him.

Diana thought, 'Daisy is so shameless.'

"Where's Nicholas?" Daniel asked after his call, noticing Aragorn and Gummidge from the Watsons were there, but not Nicholas.

Aragorn gave a sheepish smile. "Nicholas is on a business trip."

Daniel got it; Nicholas wasn't showing up today.

He just hoped Nicholas wouldn't regret it.

Even though Daisy had a premature birth, everything was prepped, so the delivery went smoothly.

About five hours later, Daisy gave birth to a son.

The nurse came out to give the good news.

"Congrats, the mom had a boy."

Aragorn's face lit up, and he grabbed Gummidge's hand, all excited.

"Thank you, thank you. Where's the baby?"

"The baby is premature and needs to stay in the incubator for a bit. It's not the right time for visits."

Mia anxiously asked, "How's my daughter?"

"The mom's exhausted and is asleep. She'll be moved to a ward later."

Everyone was relieved Daisy had a safe delivery, especially Mia, Aragorn, and Gummidge.

Aragorn held Gummidge's hand. "This is the first boy in the Watsons. We need to give him a good name. Oh, and let's tell Nicholas the good news. Maybe he'll be so happy he'll come home."

Nicholas liked kids; he was crazy about Josie. He was sticking with Caroline for Josie's sake.

They were all thinking, 'So what about Daisy? Would he stick around for the kid?'

Gummidge tried calling Nicholas but couldn't get through, so he shot him a text.

At that moment, Nicholas was still chilling at Caroline's place, clearly not planning to leave. Since Caroline didn't kick him out, he stayed put.

Seeing Gummidge's message, Nicholas felt a rush of emotions.

He quickly texted Sharpe.

Half an hour later, Sharpe replied.

[The baby is premature and needs to stay in the incubator for a few days. We need to wait until the baby is out of the incubator to do a paternity test.]

Nicholas: [Okay.]

Caroline finished checking Josie's new piece and let Josie practice on her own. She came out with a cup of water.

Nicholas's eyes immediately locked onto her, soft and lingering, with a hint of excitement.

Caroline blushed under his gaze, lowered her head, and headed straight to the kitchen.

Nicholas didn't tell Caroline about Daisy giving birth. He didn't want to stress her out now. The paternity test results would be back soon enough, and then he'd spill everything.

After waiting so long, he could finally clear his name.

Nicholas stayed at Caroline's place for four whole days. During those days, he didn't leave until the fourth day when he had to go to work.

Caroline also started working on her new semester's teaching plan.

Even though there was still some time before the semester started, she wanted to finish the plan early so she could hit the ground running when the new term began.

Wesley suddenly sent a message.

Wesley: [Caroline, have you seen the news online?]

Caroline: [What news?]

Wesley sent a link to an article.

[College Instructor's Questionable Path to Employment]

The headline was super sensational.

Caroline thought it was just another piece of gossip Wesley had found. She was bored and decided to read it.

But when she clicked on it, she realized it was about her.

The article claimed she got her job at the music academy through shady means, seduced wealthy men, and became a mistress.

Various media outlets picked up the story, with sharp words and logical arguments. Caroline almost believed the lies herself.

The news had already hit the top five trending topics, and its popularity was still climbing.

Melissa also sent a message.

[The school and the education department have received many reports. After discussion, they decided to suspend you pending investigation.]

Caroline repeated in her head, 'Suspended pending investigation?'

Her face changed, and she called Melissa.

Melissa answered quickly and spoke urgently. "Caroline, did you piss someone off?"

Caroline thought for a moment. "No."

"I find this very strange. The education department got the reports before the New Year but didn't handle them during the holiday. Now, more reports are coming in."

It was clear someone was gunning for Caroline.

"Think carefully. Did you tick anyone off before?"

The only person Caroline could think of was Daisy from the Wolfs.

Caroline pondered, 'Besides Daisy, no one else would do this.'

Caroline said, "Melissa, I think I know who it is."

"Good, now think of a way to deal with it."

Caroline talked with Melissa for half an hour, and she felt much calmer afterward.

Now, she was in the spotlight and couldn't do anything. If she did, those media outlets would have a field day.
