Chapter 585 Don't Want To

Caroline was sprawled out on the bed, eyes wide open, just staring as the sky outside turned darker and darker.

Outta nowhere, she heard a noise and thought, "Oh, that must be Lisa."

"I ain't hungry," she mumbled.

"Mom."

Hearing Josie's voice, Caroline shot up and flicked on the bedside lamp.

Josie came over and wrapped her arms around Caroline.

"Mom, why aren't you eating? If you don't eat, you'll get hungry, and if you're hungry, it'll hurt."

Caroline gave Josie's head a gentle pat.

"Mom's not hungry right now."

"Why's Mom so down?" Josie looked up at Caroline's face. "Is it 'cause you didn't see me and missed me? I missed you too, Mom."

Caroline's heart melted at Josie's sweetness. She hugged Josie tight; Josie was like her magic cure, making everything better with just a few words.

"Yeah, Mom missed Josie."

"Then can Mom go out to eat with Josie?"

"Of course."

Josie beamed, showing off a few white teeth and a cute little dimple. Caroline looked at Josie's face and those two photos popped into her mind. She thought of her childhood and the Wolfs.

These memories flickered through her mind like an old movie before fading away.

Seeing Caroline being comforted by Josie, Nicholas felt a mix of relief and heartbreak. He wanted to comfort her too.

After dinner, Josie wanted to go for a walk, so Caroline had to push Nicholas along.

The three of them were happy together.

After Josie crashed for the night, Caroline saw Nicholas still grinding away at work in the living room. She went to the kitchen, heated up a cup of milk, and brought it to him.

Nicholas saw the milk and felt a warm fuzzy feeling inside.

He picked it up and drank half of it.

"Lisa must've spilled the beans," Caroline said, sitting down across from him.

Nicholas nodded. "Yeah."

"I wanna find out who lost me back then and who tried to off me."

"Okay, I'll help you."

Caroline got serious. "I heard from Saskia's daughter that Mia went there looking for a kid before Daniel, but later said she found one. The one she found should be Diana."

"How did Mia find Hope Orphanage before Daniel? And Diana, how did they find Diana?"

Caroline fired off a bunch of questions.

She'd never really cared about how the Wolfs found their kid, so she didn't know how they figured Diana was their daughter.

Nicholas said, "Mr. Wolf told me that Mia was the first to find Diana and that Mia did the paternity test."

"Mia, it was her!" Caroline said firmly.

Nicholas thought for a moment. "You think Diana's a fake brought in by Mia?"

"Yeah."

Besides Mia, Caroline couldn't think of anyone else who'd want her dead.

Caroline mused, 'I was so young back then. And how did Mia find Hope Orphanage?'

"We can start digging into Mia," Nicholas said seriously.

"Yeah!"

"Mr. Wolf..."

Caroline cut him off, "I don't want the Wolfs to know just yet."

She hadn't figured out how to face the Wolfs, especially since the real culprit was still out there.

Nicholas nodded.

Daniel was still in Municity, tailing the orphanage teacher there, but it took him a few days to find the teacher's place.

The teacher was super cautious. It took Daniel several visits to gain his trust.

Daniel showed him a photo of his daughter taken before she went missing.

"This is my daughter. Do you recognize her?"

The teacher, with gray hair but still pretty spry, squinted at the photo through his old-man glasses.

He stared at it for so long, Daniel felt like he was aging right there.

"She looks kinda familiar."

Daniel's eyes lit up. "Do you know what happened to her? Where did she go?"

The teacher kept staring at the photo, deep in thought.

"I remember she was rescued by the cops from some human traffickers. Later, there was a fire at the orphanage. Saskia said she was burned to death, but I remember we didn't find her body. Maybe she was burned to ashes."

"Ashes?"

Daniel's face went pale. He couldn't believe it; he refused to believe his daughter was dead.

"If her body wasn't found, how could she be ashes? Please, think again."

"That's all I can remember. It's been too long, and my memory's fuzzy. Mr. Wolf, I suggest you ask Saskia. She knows the most."

But Saskia had Alzheimer's. Daniel had visited her many times, but she was always out of it.

Daniel didn't get any useful info here.

Daniel thought, 'No, I got something!'

His daughter had fallen into the hands of human traffickers and must have gone through hell.

Daniel's eyes welled up, turning red. A wave of sadness hit him, a stark contrast to his usual calm demeanor.

He quickly booked a flight back home for the next day.

Tiffany had been having a rough time lately. Her beauty salon had tanked, her live stream kept getting bombarded with reports, and to top it off, the products she was pushing were causing a stir.

Tiffany was frustrated and drank alone at home during the day.

She looked at Gabriel's photo, tears streaming down her face.

"Gabriel, I miss you so much. I haven't seen you in forever."

Every time she went to the Lancaster Group to find Gabriel, she couldn't even get past the front door. She went to Gabriel's old apartment, but it had been empty for a long time.

Tiffany asked Dylan and found out that Gabriel now stayed at the old house every day, where Sophia and the three kids lived.

Tiffany cursed under her breath, 'They've really become a family.'

Tiffany took a big gulp of red wine.

She threw the bottle, shattering it.

At that moment, her phone rang. Seeing the unfamiliar virtual number, she smiled and answered.

A voice altered by a voice changer came through.

"If you don't act soon, Sophia and Gabriel will really remarry."

Tiffany snapped back, "I want to do something, but Sophia is now the heir to the Blackwoods and has bodyguards around her."

"Who told you to go after Sophia!"

"Then who should I go after?"

The three kids also had several bodyguards, always sticking close. Tiffany had no chance to get near them.

"Of course, Gabriel."

Tiffany bit her lip, her cheeks flushed from the alcohol, but her eyes were clear. Listening to the voice on the other end, a vicious glint flashed in her eyes.

'In my current state, how could I win Gabriel back?' Tiffany brooded.

She couldn't keep living in the shadows. 'Why should I live in the dust while Sophia became the heir to a wealthy family, shining brightly?'

Sophia sneezed twice, and Gabriel asked with concern, "Got a cold?"

Sophia shook her head.

Today was the Blackwoods' house-warming party. Sophia returned to The Blackwood Manor to help, and Gabriel came with Ruth as guests.
