Chapter 428 It Scared Him Extremely
The doorbell rang, and Caroline quickly wiped her tears, composed herself, and opened the door.
Two unfamiliar women stood outside.
'They must be looking for Paul,' she thought.
"Who are you?" Caroline asked politely.
The women exchanged glances. Harper had brought her friend to stir up trouble.
Harper sneered, "No wonder Paul's been ignoring me. So, you're the one who's lured him away."
Caroline stayed silent. 'Why does everyone keep calling me a seductress? What did I do?'
"I don't care who you are to Paul, but watch your mouth."
Harper looked Caroline up and down like she was inspecting goods.
"You're not that pretty, but you do have a nice figure. No wonder Paul keeps you here."
Harper arrogantly pushed Caroline aside and barged in with her friend.
Caroline hurried after them.
"Paul isn't here. Please leave!"
Just then, Nicholas came out, and Harper and her friend were stunned by his appearance.
They thought Paul was handsome, but Nicholas was even more attractive, even in a wheelchair. One cold glance from him made their hearts flutter.
'Paul isn't here, and you're so desperate you're even picking on disabled people!'
Harper's filthy mind could only think of dirty things.
Seeing their hostile expressions, Caroline quickly walked over to push Nicholas back into the room.
"You go inside. I'll handle this."
She instinctively treated Nicholas as someone who needed protection.
Nicholas felt a surge of happiness inside.
'Is she protecting me? Is she afraid I might get hurt by these two women?'
"You can't go," Harper said, fearing Caroline would go in and not come out. She reached out to grab her but accidentally pulled her hair.
Caroline cried out in pain.
Seeing Harper make a move, her friend thought she was going to hit Caroline, so she immediately stepped forward to strike Caroline.
"Bitch, stay away from my friend's boyfriend."
Caroline reacted quickly, dodging the blow and then slapping the other woman in return.
Her injuries had mostly healed, and she was no longer the pitiful person who could only be bullied while sitting in a wheelchair.
Harper and her friend lunged at Caroline.
"Caroline," Nicholas called out urgently, wanting to help her. He pulled out an intelligent retractable cane from the armrest of his wheelchair and struck Harper and her friend.
They screamed in pain.
Nicholas' eyes were fierce, and he showed no mercy.
Harper's friend, after being hit twice, circled behind Nicholas and maliciously pushed his wheelchair down the steps.
"Nicholas!"
"Nicholas!"
Two voices cried out simultaneously. Caroline was entangled with Harper and couldn't save Nicholas.
Paul rushed over, but it was too late. Nicholas had already fallen.
"Nicholas, are you okay? Are you hurt anywhere?"
Paul quickly helped Nicholas up.
His eyes were bloodshot as he glared at Harper.
"Damn it, get out! All of you, get out of here, now!"
"Paul." Harper was stunned.
"Do I need to call the cops?"
Harper was terrified. She let go of Caroline and ran off with her friend.
Today's incident was too unexpected. Paul had deliberately sent the bodyguards away to give Nicholas and Caroline some alone time. He didn't expect Harper, that crazy woman, to come and cause trouble in such a short time.
If anything had happened to Nicholas, Paul would have blame himself.
Luckily, the steps weren't high, and Nicholas only had some scrapes on his hands and legs.
Paul grabbed the first aid kit while Josie squatted in front of Nicholas, looking at his injuries with a pained expression.
"Why did they push Daddy?"
Nicholas gently explained, "They were hitting Mommy, and I helped her, so they pushed me."
"They're bad people!" Josie said angrily.
Paul came over with the first aid kit.
"Caroline, can you help Nicholas with his injuries?"
Caroline didn't refuse. Nicholas got hurt because he was helping her.
She hadn't suffered much this time, thanks to Nicholas' timely intervention.
"Where are you going?" Nicholas asked sharply, looking at Paul.
Paul clenched his fists. "I'm going to get revenge for you and Caroline!"
He had met Harper at a bar before he returned to the country. He thought she was cute and flirted with her for a few days.
They had no real relationship. After returning to the country, he hadn't contacted her, and even after coming back here, he hadn't paid her any attention.
However, Harper went around claiming to be his girlfriend.
Now she had come to bully Nicholas and Caroline.
He didn't like crazy women like Harper.
Paul stormed off in anger.
Caroline crouhced down with scissors in hand. She cut Nicholas' pant leg, revealing the severe wound on his knee.
His knee was almost a bloody mess. But he hadn't even made a sound.
Josie started to cry.
"Daddy, does it hurt?"
It must hurt a lot.
Nicholas felt sorry for Josie.
"It doesn't hurt. Josie, can you play the violin for me?"
"Okay."
Wiping away her tears, Josie ran to her room to get her violin and started playing for Nicholas.
Caroline realized Nicholas was trying to distract Josie.
She carefully cleaned his wound with iodine-soaked cotton.
Nicholas watched her serious expression, feeling his heart fill with something indescribable.
If every time he got hurt, he could receive her meticulous care, he wouldn't mind getting hurt every day.
"Doesn't it really hurt?" Caroline asked, feeling pained just looking at it.
There was dirt and small stones in the wound. She used tweezers to gently remove them. Some were stuck in the wound and had to be carefully swept out with a cotton swab before being picked out.
It must be excruciating, but Nicholas seemed unfazed, even smiling slightly.
"It doesn't hurt. Do what you need to do. Don't worry about me."
Caroline remembered his legs were paralyzed.
"Do your legs have no feeling at all?"
So that was why Nicholas didn't feel any pain.
"Yes."
Hearing his response, Caroline felt a heavy weight in her heart.
"How did you get injured?"
"Car accident."
So he had been in such a severe car accident!
Looking at Caroline, Nicholas answered whatever she asked, not daring to say anything more.
He was afraid she might think he was trying to gain her sympathy.
"Can your legs be cured?"
Caroline continued to ask casually.
"Not much hope."
Caroline paused, feeling even more stifled.
When Nicholas stood, he was tall and slender. He loved to exercise and often dragged her along for runs, complaining about her poor health. Once, he insisted she accompany him for a marathon, and she fainted halfway, scaring him extremely.
For some reason, Caroline thought of this memory, and her expression softened.
