Chapter 598 Please Go Back
But Daniel remembered that the little girl named "Caroline" on the roster had already been marked dead.
The name "Caroline," etched in his memory from the orphanage roster, had been quickly dismissed. Daniel, clinging desperately to the hope of finding Diana, had refused to believe Caroline could be his daughter.
Saskia snatched the photo from Daniel's hand, her eyes gradually becoming focused.
The fire had taken the lives of many children, so even though Saskia had Alzheimer's, she couldn't forget that tragic misfortune.
A youthful photo of Caroline triggered a wave of lucidity in Saskia, bringing forth a flood of fragmented memories from that fateful day.
Daniel looked at Saskia with hope.
"Can you tell me where she is now? What's her name now?" His voice trembled. A searing pain, like molten lava, coursed through him.
"Who are you?" Saskia looked at Daniel for a long time.
"I am her biological father. I've been looking for her for many years."
Daniel pointed to himself in the photo.
"This is me, this is my daughter when she was young, this is my wife, also Caroline's biological mother. We've all been looking for her."
Saskia's hand trembled as she held the photo.
She looked at Daniel, seemingly hesitating whether to tell him.
"The fire, Caroline didn't die."
"I had Lisa take her away and hide her."
"She's in City B."
Daniel was excited and blurted out, "Is her name Caroline Clark?"
"Caroline Clark?" Saskia was puzzled for a moment, then firmly said, "Yes, she's grown up now. Her name is Caroline Clark. She's beautiful. I'm so glad she grew up safely."
Saskia mumbled a lot, but Daniel didn't hear the rest.
He only heard Saskia say, "Her name is Caroline Clark."
'Caroline really is my daughter!' He thought.
The moment he saw the birthmark on Caroline, he had a feeling, but to avoid another mistake, he had to go to City H to confirm with Saskia in person.
A tear slid down Daniel's face. He stood up, holding onto the coffee table, feeling dizzy and almost falling again.
"Mr. Wolf," Ruby called out worriedly.
Daniel said, "Thank you, thank you all. I'm fine. So... my daughter has been by my side all along."
He laughed self-deprecatingly. "But I didn't notice at all."
Daniel left Saskia in a hurry and got into the car, urgently instructing the driver to head to the airport, only to find that there were no more flights to City B today.
"Mr. Wolf, how about I take you to a nearby hotel to rest for the night?"
Daniel shook his head.
"No need, I bought a connecting flight ticket."
He just wanted to get back to City B as quickly as possible to see Caroline.
So he'd rather deal with the headache of a layover than spend another minute waiting around.
Daniel boarded the plane and fell asleep as soon as he sat down due to his dizziness.
He slept restlessly, and after arriving at his destination, the flight attendant woke him up, and Daniel immediately transferred to another flight.
Nicholas finished his work as quickly as possible and rushed back to City B overnight, arriving a bit earlier than Daniel.
Caroline, like as usual, had breakfast with Josie and took her to school. Just as they were leaving, they ran into Nicholas.
Seeing Nicholas and Sharpe looking travel-worn, Caroline was momentarily stunned.
"Daddy," Josie ran up and hugged Nicholas tightly.
Nicholas kissed Josie.
"How 'bout Daddy and Mommy take you to school together?"
"Wow, awesome!" Josie bounced around like a little kangaroo.
Caroline, always the mom, asked, "You guys had breakfast yet?"
Before Nicholas could get a word in, Sharpe chimed in, "Nah, we didn't have time."
Caroline was curious why Nicholas was in such a rush, but she still went back to grab some bread and milk for them to munch on in the car.
After dropping Josie off at school, Caroline had to head to work too, so Nicholas drove her to the music academy.
"If you got urgent stuff, you can go ahead. I can grab a cab."
She was gonna drive, but since Nicholas wanted to take Josie, she let him.
"My urgent business is being with you."
Caroline was taken aback, feeling a warm fuzziness inside.
She thought, 'So he rushed back just for me? But everything's cool, and he’s got people looking out for me and Josie.'
Nicholas hesitated, his lips parting like he wanted to say something, but he just sighed instead.
When they pulled up to the music academy, Caroline got out and noticed Nicholas wasn’t budging.
"You're not planning to hang out with me at work, are you?"
Nicholas blinked. "Can I?"
Caroline was speechless.
"Caroline," a hoarse, familiar voice called out suddenly.
Caroline's body tensed, and she turned to see Daniel getting out of a car.
His head was wrapped in bandages, and he looked pale and sickly.
Caroline ignored him and started to walk away with her bag.
Daniel hurried over, but he was so weak he almost face-planted. Luckily, Sharpe caught him.
Caroline stopped.
"Mr. Wolf, what do you want from me?"
Her coldness stung Daniel.
"Caroline, you... you’re my daughter. I've been searching for you for decades."
The moment Daniel showed up, Caroline had already guessed he knew.
But hearing it still made her heart do flips.
She felt a mix of emotions, even a bit panicked.
Emotion clogged Daniel's throat, making it hard to talk. He walked slowly towards Caroline, wanting to hug her, his voice choked with emotion.
"It's my fault. You've been right here, and I didn't see it. Caroline, I'm so sorry."
"All these years, your mom and I have been thinking about you. We never stopped looking."
"I'm sorry for letting you fend for yourself all these years. Now I'm here to take you home. Let's go home, okay?"
Daniel reached out, about to touch her sleeve, but she turned away, giving him the cold shoulder.
"Home?" She laughed bitterly, feeling all sorts of confused and upset. "Your whole family wants me gone."
Daniel's face fell, remembering the danger in City H and the drama with Mia, Daisy, and Caroline.
"Mr. Wolf, please leave. I need to work."
She started to walk away, but Daniel's voice stopped her.
"Caroline, I'm sorry. I didn't think it through. Don't worry, I'll find out who hurt you and make sure it never happens again."
He wanted to claim her as his daughter, but Caroline wasn’t ready, maybe didn’t even want to.
This was a gut punch for Daniel.
But he was helpless.
All of this was their own doing.
It was all his fault. His daughter had been right there, and he didn’t know.
