Chapter 604 Do Me a Favor

Caroline caught Linda's reaction and felt a cold shiver run down her spine, like someone just dumped a bucket of ice water on her soul.

Suddenly, the whole quest to find her so-called real parents felt like a big fat waste of time.

Why? Because her birth mom didn't even want to acknowledge her.

"Mr. Wolf, my mom's getting treatment and needs peace and quiet. Can you take this convo somewhere else?"

Caroline's icy tone made Daniel's heart clench, and he turned to face her.

"Caroline, your mom, she..."

"My mom is resting inside," Caroline stressed, making it clear Lisa was her mom, and Linda was a nobody.

Linda's face went ghostly white, her expression a tangled mess, like someone was squeezing her heart in a vice.

"Mom." Diana's weak voice broke through the tension.

Linda snapped back to reality, seeing Diana's scared face. This was the daughter she had poured all her love into.

She suddenly looked at Daniel with determination.

"You say Diana isn't our kid, but Caroline is. Got any proof?"

"Yeah, Daniel, we need to get to the bottom of this to avoid getting played," Mia chimed in.

Daniel barked, "Shut up!"

Mia shrank back, looking hurt and confused.

Their families had always been tight, and as her brother-in-law, Daniel had never spoken to her like that. But today, he had snapped at her more than once.

Mia felt wronged but kept her mouth shut.

Daniel knew this was a tough pill for Linda to swallow. She had loved Diana like her own, and now he was dropping this bombshell.

Daniel grabbed his phone and made a call.

The paternity test results should be ready by now.

After the call, he looked at Caroline with a softer gaze.

"Caroline, if you don't want to stick around, you can go inside and rest. I'll handle this."

Caroline looked around at everyone. She had things she wanted to say but bit her tongue, not wanting to make things harder for Daniel.

So she nodded and headed into Lisa's ward.

Nicholas shot a glance at Linda.

"Mrs. Wolf, keep your eyes open and don't get played by those around you."

He gave Mia and Diana a pointed look before following Caroline into the ward.

The door closed, shutting out the chaos outside.

The VIP ward was soundproof, so no more noise from outside could be heard.

Lisa held Caroline's hand.

"Don't be sad."

Caroline's eyes got a little misty, and she buried herself in Lisa's arms.

"I'm not sad."

When she found out she was the lost Wolf kid, she never planned on going back to them.

'This is perfect; I can't stand them, and they don't want me. But I gotta find out who wanted me dead ASAP.' Caroline frowned, deep in thought.

Nicholas stayed quietly by her side, watching her snuggle into Lisa's arms. Even her serious look was so captivating.

"I have an idea," he suddenly broke the silence.

Caroline looked at him, confused. "What?"

"I had someone track down the human trafficker who got caught back then. He said he got you from a guy named Jared Phillips."

"I found out that Phillips vanished over a decade ago."

Caroline listened, her delicate brows knitting tighter.

"It's tough to dig up clues from twenty years ago, but we can use Jared Phillips' name to see if Mia was involved."

Caroline lifted her head a bit. "You think that'll work?"

"Only one way to find out."

Caroline mulled it over. 'They’re out of options; decades have passed, and all the clues are probably long gone. Mia’s a crafty one; she must’ve covered her tracks back then.'

Now, they had to make her slip up and reveal herself.

"Alright, I'll get someone to help."

Nicholas raised an eyebrow. "Who?"

"My godson, Ethan."

Ethan sneezed loudly.

Sam handed him a tissue, all considerate-like.

Ethan took it and wiped his nose. Usually, he was as healthy as a horse, but he’d caught a cold these past couple of days. Luckily, no fever, so Sophia didn’t make him go to school.

Since Ethan was home, Sam didn’t want to go to school either. Emma, on the other hand, decided to go to class to keep Josie company.

Sophia also skipped work at Fusion Dynamics Corporation to stay home and take care of Sam and Ethan.

Even though the Lancasters had plenty of nannies, Sophia had been swamped lately and hadn’t spent much quality time with the kids.

"Ethan, did you take your medicine?" Sophia asked.

Ethan nodded. "Yep."

Sam’s eyes went wide. He’d seen Ethan chuck the pills in the trash.

Ethan shot him a look, silently begging him not to snitch.

Sophia’s phone rang. It was Caroline.

"Ethan, Caroline wants to talk to you."

Sophia handed him the phone.

Ethan plopped down on a comfy cushion, cross-legged. "Hey."

"Ethan, I need your help," Caroline quickly explained.

Ethan’s eyes lit up. 'Another mission!' he thought, excited.

Meanwhile, Daniel got the paternity test results, confirming Caroline was indeed his biological daughter.

Seeing the results, Daniel felt a rush of joy.

He hadn’t been wrong; Caroline was his daughter.

Daniel, bursting with excitement, wanted to run to the next ward and hug Caroline.

But first, he needed Linda to face the truth.

He handed the test report to Linda.

Linda took it, her hands trembling, her body swaying as Diana supported her.

"Mom," Diana choked out.

Linda’s heart twisted in agony.

"How could it be wrong? Why is it wrong?"

She looked at Daniel, her face pale and her emotions all over the place. "Tell me, why is it wrong!"

Daniel held Linda, trying to comfort her. "I’m sorry, I should’ve told you sooner. This is on me."

His sharp gaze turned to Mia.

"Mia, you did the paternity test back then. Why did it show Diana as our daughter?"

"I... I don’t know." Mia’s mind was a blank.

Ever since she failed to kill Daniel, things had spiraled out of control.

"I really don’t know."

"If that test could be wrong, what about this one? Daniel, to be sure, you should do another one."

"No need. This one’s accurate. The problem is you," Daniel said coldly. "You better have a good explanation, or else..."

A fierce glint flashed in his eyes.

"Or else we’ll deal with this along with the case of you hiring someone to kill me!"

Mia’s eyes widened in shock.

She wanted to protest, to argue, but Michael, who had been MIA, suddenly rushed in and hurriedly pulled Mia and Daisy away.
