Chapter 471 Cracks Appeared
Two cars drove in one after the other. Nicholas was sitting in the first car, and the moment he saw Caroline's car appear, a glimmer of light flashed in his eyes.
He was about to ask Sharpe to help him out of the car when he keenly noticed a man getting out of a car parked next to Caroline's. The man smiled at her, and she walked towards him.
Caroline and the man chatted and laughed for a while. After a moment, the man pointed to the other side, waved, and walked away.
Caroline also walked towards the elevator.
"Mr. Watson, do you want to get out?" Sharpe looked at Nicholas.
"Yes."
As the elevator doors were about to close, Caroline keenly saw Sharpe pushing Nicholas towards her. She was stunned for a second, then reacted and pressed the open button.
The elevator doors opened again, and Nicholas smiled slightly.
She had waited for him.
Sharpe pushed Nicholas in.
"Hi, Ms. Clark," Sharpe greeted Caroline.
Caroline nodded in acknowledgment. She glanced at Nicholas, knowing he must be here to see Josie.
But it was already quite late.
"We just got back from out of town. We came straight here from the airport. Is Josie asleep?" Sharpe started chatting with Caroline.
Nicholas pursed his lips slightly, thinking about the man he had just seen. He felt uneasy.
It seemed there were many outstanding men around Caroline.
Caroline checked her watch and answered Sharpe's question. "She should still be awake."
The elevator arrived, and the three of them got out. Caroline opened the door to her apartment. Lisa was sitting in the living room waiting for her.
Ever since Caroline had taken Josie and Lisa in to care for them, she felt a sense of home every time she returned.
Whenever she came back early, Lisa would prepare dinner and wait for her with Josie. If she came back late, Lisa would sit in the living room watching TV, waiting for her. Only when she saw Caroline return would Lisa feel at ease to rest.
"Caroline." Lisa turned around and saw Nicholas coming in behind Caroline. She hadn't expected Nicholas to come over so late.
"Josie is asleep," Lisa said.
"I'll go check on her." Nicholas signaled Sharpe to push him to Josie's room.
A few minutes later, Nicholas came out and saw only Caroline sitting on the living room sofa.
He gestured to Sharpe, who understood and left Nicholas, going to wait by the door.
Nicholas maneuvered his wheelchair toward Caroline. "I heard you joined your alma mater."
"I did," Caroline said. She thought of what Gummidge had told her and looked at Nicholas with an inscrutable expression.
Nicholas lowered his head slightly and took a small box from his suit pocket, handing it to Caroline.
"I saw this while buying a gift for Josie. It's a matching parent-child set with the one Josie has."
A strange feeling crossed Caroline's heart.
This was the first gift Nicholas had given her since they reunited after six years.
She shouldn't accept it, but it was a matching set with Josie's.
Nicholas opened the box, revealing a beautiful brooch. The design was simple and elegant, yet luxurious. Caroline was immediately drawn to it..
Most importantly...
Seeing Caroline's lack of reaction, Nicholas pursed his lips slightly and said, "This is a women's style. I can't wear it."
So that was why he was giving it to her?
Caroline reached out and took it. "Thank you."
Nicholas immediately relaxed.
He had really been afraid thatCaroline wouldn't accept it.
When he was buying the gift, he had actually liked something else, but he was afraid Caroline wouldn't accept it, so he specifically chose a matching parent-child brooch.
In fact, there were three brooches in the set.
The third one, amen's brooch, was in his other pocket.
Having successfully given Caroline the gift, Nicholas didn't want to leave.
The atmosphere was tense. Neither Caroline nor Nicholas spoke again. Caroline stared at the brooch in her hand.
She had so many questions but didn't know how to ask them.
"I..."
"You..."
They spoke at the same time.
Nicholas' eyes lit up. "You go ahead."
Caroline said, "I just wanted to say, you just got back from a trip. You must be tired. You should go rest early."
Nicholas felt that wasn't what she wanted to say, but it was what she said.
"Okay," he said, disappointed.
"What were you going to say?" Caroline asked.
"Nothing. I'm leaving."
"Oh."
Nicholas reluctantly turned to leave.
Caroline had wanted to ask about his estrangement from his family, but the words changed when they reached her lips. After all, she had no right to interfere in Nicholas' family affairs.
Luckily, she didn't ask. Otherwise, she would have been meddling too much.
Caroline took the brooch and went to see Josie. There was also a brooch on Josie's bedside table.
Two brooches, one large and one small, both very beautiful.
After washing up, Nicholas laid in bed and picked up his phone, opening Caroline's Twitter.
She hadn't posted any updates today.
Looking at her last post, Nicholas' mind flashed back to the man he saw in the parking lot tonight.
At that moment, he sensed the presence of a rival.
Caroline was beautiful and outstanding. She would likely attract more suitors at school.
Nicholas' sense of crisis surged.
A call came in, and Nicholas accidentally swiped to answer it.
Gummidge's anxious voice came through the phone. "Nicholas, come back quickly. Daisy's morning sickness is severe. She needs you."
Nicholas replied coldly, "She needs a doctor, not me."
Gummidge was at a loss for words. "But you're her husband."
"Mom, don't you understand anything I say?"
Gummidge was silent.
"I was wrong. Maybe it's not Daisy who needs a doctor, but you and Dad." Nicholas' voice carried a hint of anger.
It had always been this way. His parents often forced him to do things he didn't want to do. They were selectively deaf to his feelings.
Nicholas hung up and blocked Gummidge's number.
"If Nicholas doesn't want to come back, let's not force him to," Daisy said, sitting pale-faced beside Gummidge.
Aragorn sat opposite, his face cold and expressionless.
Gummidge tried calling again but couldn't get through.
Hearing the mechanical tone indicating a connection failure, Gummidge realized what had happened. Her expression changed. "He blocked my number."
Cracks had appeared in their mother-son relationship.
Tears welled up in Gummidge's eyes. Her shoulders were slumped, and a wave of sadness enveloped her.
Daisy reached out to hold Gummidge's shoulder. "Aunt Gummidge, don't be sad. Nicholas will come around. When my baby is born, Nicholas will surely like it and come to see the child. I'm just worried that if Nicholas spends these months with Caroline, something might happen between them."
Daisy's words made Aragorn's body tremble.
Gummidge's light sobbing also stopped.
