Chapter 445 Everything Was A Joke
Nicholas' explanation had everyone sighing, especially those who attended the wedding. They saw Daisy there alone and witnessed the drama that unfolded.
The Watson and Wolf families had painted a perfect love story between Nicholas and Daisy, but it turned out to be a joke.
Nicholas said he had been working in Country M at the time and had never agreed to the marriage. It was all the families' and Daisy's wishful thinking.
Nicholas couldn't take it anymore and issued a clarification.
Public opinion quickly sided with Nicholas, and people started speaking up against forced marriages.
But then some netizens suggested Nicholas might be a jerk. They criticized him, saying that if he hadn't agreed to the marriage, why didn't he resist from the start? Why wait until after the wedding to deny it?
Soon, people online started believing these criticisms.
Caroline saw the trending topics the next morning. News about prominent figures like Nicholas always drew attention.
She read the Watson Group's statement and remembered what Nicholas had told her in Country Y. She frowned.
After scrolling for half an hour, she saw comments calling Nicholas a jerk. She was still confused about him.
After a long time, she sighed. She decided to stop reading. Whatever Nicholas had done had nothing to do with her. She just wanted to focus on Josie's growth now.
She had a place to stay and needed to find a job and make money. She had to pay Sophia back, support her kids, give Josie a better environment, and ensure Lisa could enjoy her retirement.
Caroline silently encouraged herself.
With a change in mindset, good luck seemed to come her way. She saw an email from the management team in Country M.
Caroline read the email and smiled, but her smile quickly faded to disappointment.
The team said her tour might restart, aiming to officially start next year. If it did, she'd spend at least half a year traveling for performances.
Where would that leave Josie, who had just come back to her?
She could take Josie with her, giving her a chance to perform and boosting her confidence. However, Nicholas wouldn't agree to that!
Caroline clenched her fist, then relaxed it. On one side was her dream, on the other was her daughter.
After a long time, she replied to the email.
Caroline: [Thank you for everything you've done for me. I forgot to tell you: I found my daughter, and I just want to stay in Country Z to be with her for the next year.]
In the end, Caroline chose Josie. She'd work on her dream later.
Ethan, Emma, and Sam started school, and along with Josie, the four kids were in the same first-grade class.
On the first day of school, Nicholas wanted to be the one to send Josie off, so he showed up at the apartment and texted Caroline.
Caroline styled Josie's hair like a princess. She wore a nice uniform and carried a backpack. From a distance, Nicholas saw Caroline holding Josie's hand, and his heart pounded.
If only his legs were normal, he could get out of the car, greet them, and Josie would run into his arms, calling him daddy.
For the first time, Nicholas felt a glimmer of hope about his legs.
Sharpe opened the back door, and Caroline helped Josie in before taking a seat herself.
Nicholas and Caroline sat with Josie between them.
Josie was thrilled; it was the first time both her parents were taking her to school together. Her face beamed with joy.
Caroline and Nicholas didn't say much, and Josie was quiet too, but the atmosphere was unusually harmonious.
At the school gate, cars were coming and going. Only wealthy families could afford this school, and for safety reasons, parents could only drop their kids off at the gate.
Caroline got out with Josie, and Sharpe quickly moved to help Nicholas out of the car.
"I'll take Josie to the gate," Caroline said, seeing how inconvenient it was for Nicholas. She thought it wouldn't make a difference if she were the one to take Josie to the gate.
Besides, Ethan, Emma, and Sam were already waiting.
Nicholas pursed his lips slightly and said nothing. He insisted on having Sharpe help him out of the car and into the wheelchair.
"Josie," he said, extending his hand.
Josie quickly reached out and held Nicholas' hand.
Caroline said nothing more.
"Josie!" Emma spotted Josie and her eyes lit up. She tugged at Ethan. "Ethan, look at Caroline and Uncle Nicholas. Are they getting back together?"
Ethan raised an eyebrow.
Sam blinked his eyes adorably.
Josie let go of her parents' hands and ran over.
"Emma, we can play together again!" she said.
Seeing Josie's happy smile, Caroline felt a bit touched. She suddenly realized that her previous notion of taking Josie abroad was wrong.
Josie was more comfortable and happy stayinghere.
"Caroline," Sophia called out to her.
It was the first time Caroline had seen Sophia since returning. She noticed Sophia had lost some weight.
Caroline said with concern, "Have you not been resting well lately?"
Sophia shook her head. "I'm fine now, no worries."
"Mommy, Caroline, we're going in," Emma said, holding Josie's hand with one hand and Sam's with the other. Sam's other hand was held by Ethan.
Josie said, "Bye, Mom and Dad."
"Bye," Nicholas said, watching Josie with gentle affection.
The four kids walked in hand in hand, looking very cool, attracting the attention of other kids and even prompting a teacher to take a photo with her phone.
"Ms. Clark, where are you headed next? We can give you a ride," Sharpe asked Caroline.
"Thank you, but you don't have to. I'll leave with Sophia."
"Alright, Ms. Clark. Take care."
Sharpe glanced at Nicholas, seeing that he had no intention of speaking. He sighed inwardly and pushed him away.
Caroline and Sophia went to a nearby cafe to chat.
Sophia asked Caroline about her time abroad and, after careful observation, noticed that Caroline was keeping something from her.
"Did something happen abroad?" Sophia asked seriously.
Caroline knew she couldn't hide it, so she told her about the home invasion.
Sophia was shocked.
Why were they so unlucky?
