Chapter 583 Question

Ruby went to grab the roster again.

"This list is something I scribbled down from memory after the fire," Saskia remembered. "It's just names; all the kids' files got torched."

Lisa took a peek too.

There were two "Dianas" on the list.

One made it, one didn't.

Caroline thought, 'Could the one who survived be Diana Scott?'

She mulled it over and asked, "You mentioned another woman came by. Was her last name Peterson?"

She guessed, 'Could it be Daniel and Linda found their real daughter here? And Linda's last name is Peterson.'

Ruby shook her head. "Nah, it wasn't Peterson. I think it was Carter."

She thought for a sec and then remembered. "Oh right, she also said she was Michael from the Wolf Group's wife, with a big-shot background."

Ruby looked a bit freaked out as she remembered that day. Mia had this strong vibe and acted all superior.

"I remember she came before Mr. Wolf. Later, when I called her, she said she already found who she was looking for."

Caroline's eyes lit up. "Were they all looking for someone named Diana?"

"Yeah, all named Diana. I think they were after the same person, but a few days ago, Mr. Wolf came back with more questions. Seems like he's still searching."

Caroline felt something was off and thought, 'Mia was helping Daniel find Diana. But isn't Diana already found? Isn't she Diana Scott? Why is Daniel still looking for Diana? Could they have found the wrong person? But the Wolfs treat Diana like their own daughter. If they found the wrong person, why would Linda protect her so fiercely?'

"One more thing, someone came yesterday asking to see your photo."

"Who?"

"Nicholas Watson."

Ruby knew Nicholas's name because the meds Saskia was using were from the Watson Group.

"What did he want?" Caroline frowned, puzzled.

"He wanted to see your childhood photos, but I didn't have any, and I didn't know who Caroline was at the time."

Nicholas wanted to see Caroline's photos, but Ruby didn't know Caroline was once at this orphanage, and there was no "Caroline" on the list.

So Nicholas left empty-handed.

Plus, without any reason or explanation, Ruby would at most show the list, not hand out photos.

Caroline's thoughts were all over the place; she needed to sort them out.

She put away her photos and had a meal with Lisa at Saskia's place. Lisa and Saskia hadn't seen each other in ages and had a lot to catch up on.

But after the meal, Saskia got confused again.

From Saskia, Caroline learned a lot of details from back then.

Before leaving, Caroline gave Ruby her number.

"If you need anything, hit me up at this number."

Ruby replied, "Okay, if someone comes looking for you again, should I let you know?"

Ruby already considered Caroline one of her own.

Caroline nodded. "That'd be awesome."

After saying goodbye to Saskia, Caroline took Lisa back to the hotel.

Lisa was beat and crashed as soon as they got back to the room. Caroline sat on the couch, staring at her childhood photos, lost in thought.

Nicholas said he saw a photo of a little girl who looked a lot like Josie. Now she saw that she also looked a lot like Josie in her childhood photos.

Caroline thought, 'There are two possibilities: one, the little girl in the photo Nicholas saw might be my sister; two, it could be my childhood photo.'

Caroline picked up her phone and shot a message to Nicholas.

Caroline: [Where u at?]

If he hadn't left yet, she wanted to see him ASAP.

Nicholas: [Just landed, heading to the office.]

Nicholas was stoked that Caroline hit him up first and was happy to let her know.

After sending the message, he waited for Caroline's reply, but it didn't come for a while.

So he sent another message.

Nicholas: [WYD?]

Caroline heard her phone buzz and snapped out of her thoughts.

Caroline: [Out with Lisa, back tomorrow.]

'Caroline went out?' Nicholas wondered.

Nicholas: [ETA in City B tomorrow? I'll send someone to get you.]

Caroline: [3 p.m.]

Nicholas: [K.]

Looked like Caroline would have to wait until she got back to talk to Nicholas.

That night, Caroline tossed and turned, unable to sleep. The next morning, before heading back, she bought a bunch of nutritional supplements for Saskia.

After meeting with Lisa yesterday, Saskia kept mumbling the names of the kids on the roster, sometimes clear-headed, sometimes confused.

Caroline took Lisa back to City B, and as soon as they got off the train, they saw Sharpe.

"You came to pick us up. What about Nicholas?"

Sharpe replied, "Miss Clark, don't worry. Mr. Lancaster has other people taking care of him."

He was pleased that Caroline was now more concerned about Nicholas.

Caroline thought about seeing Nicholas but figured he'd be swamped with work and she didn't want to bug him.

She decided to wait until he came home in the evening.

After safely dropping Caroline and Lisa home, Sharpe immediately headed back to the office.

Seeing Nicholas, Sharpe grinned and said, "Mr. Lancaster, I noticed Miss Clark is very concerned about you today."

Nicholas raised an eyebrow slightly.

"How so?"

Sharpe knew Nicholas wanted to hear more.

"When I picked her up, she was worried about you being left alone."

"And I think Miss Clark really wanted to see you but held back."

"I think she missed you a lot during these days apart."

"This is what they call 'a day apart feels like a year.'"

Nicholas looked down at his documents, a smile slowly forming on his lips.

Sharpe's grin widened. He could feel Nicholas slowly coming back to life.

Before Caroline showed up, Nicholas seemed lifeless, like a real zombie. He filled his days with work and never smiled at anyone, as if nothing could interest him.

"Mr. Lancaster, there's a meeting this afternoon that might go into the evening. It's important but not urgent. Should I reschedule it for tomorrow?" Sharpe suggested.

Nicholas nodded, "Uh huh."

Sharpe continued, "Then you can leave work an hour early today."

"Okay."

After a while, Nicholas added, "You can have a bonus next month."

Sharpe was thrilled.

Caroline bought groceries, planning to cook dinner.

As soon as she got back, she saw Nicholas had arrived.

Lisa went into the kitchen and took the groceries from Caroline.

"Go ahead."

Caroline had been preoccupied the whole way back.

Caroline washed her hands and walked out.

"Nicholas."

"Yeah?" Nicholas looked up, his eyes warm.

Caroline suddenly felt a warmth in her heart.

She walked over, trying to keep her excitement in check.

"I heard from Lisa that you saw a photo of a little girl who looked a lot like Josie."
