Chapter 601 Find the Murderer
Sophia thought to herself, "Feel sorry for Tiffany? No way. Sophia ain't feeling sorry for someone like Tiffany. Send Gabriel to find her? Not a chance. Why would I even do that?"
She couldn't wrap her head around what Gabriel was trying to say.
Seeing her quiet, Gabriel started to freak out and blurted, "Sophia, Tiffany did me a solid and saved my life. I can't just ditch her when she's in a jam."
The food came, and it smelled amazing, but suddenly, Sophia lost her appetite.
"Fine, I'll let Alex check on her. But as for her favor, I've paid it back over the years."
"Sophia, I won't see her again, and there's no chance of anything happening between us."
Gabriel, worried Sophia might get the wrong idea, tried to explain himself.
Gabriel thought, "Why does it feel like the more I talk, the deeper I dig myself into a hole?"
Sophia said, "Let's eat."
Gabriel wanted to say more but was scared he'd just mess things up even more. He decided to shut up but kept an eye on Sophia, just in case.
Sophia felt a dull ache in her heart and thought, "I saved him too, so why does he remember Tiffany and treat her so well, while I get hurt by him?"
Throughout the meal, Gabriel's eyes never left Sophia.
Sophia kept her head down, eating, with no intention of continuing the conversation with Gabriel.
When they were almost done, Sophia got up to pay the bill.
Gabriel sighed, "I already paid."
Sophia forced a smile. "I said I would treat."
"Sophia." Gabriel felt really uncomfortable. "You..."
"Let's go home. If the kids don't see me before bed tonight, they'll throw a fit," Sophia cut him off, grabbed her bag, and walked out first.
She left the bouquet on the chair.
Gabriel glanced at it, clenched his fist, and didn't bother with the flowers.
He knew that even if he handed the flowers to her now, she wouldn't be happy.
After dinner, Gabriel realized the biggest obstacle between them was Tiffany!
Tiffany waited and finally saw Alex...
The moment she saw Alex, the smile on Tiffany's face vanished.
"Miss Foster, Mr. Lancaster sent me to check on you."
Tiffany forced a smile. "Thanks. I'm fine."
"I asked the doctor, Miss Foster. You can be discharged tomorrow. I'll take you back to City B."
"My work isn't finished yet."
"There might be aftershocks in the next few days, Miss Foster. If you're okay with that, you can stay." Alex spoke in a businesslike tone.
Tiffany bit her lip.
She realized that Gabriel didn't care about her anymore. Sending Alex was probably just to repay that last bit of favor.
She was dying to get back to Gabriel, but even though she was injured, Gabriel didn't come to check on her.
Tiffany's heart turned cold.
"If I couldn't see Gabriel, how could I return to his side?" She wondered.
After Alex left the ward, Tiffany curled up on the bed, hugging her knees.
Her face was somewhat pale, with a bandage on her forehead, giving her a sickly beauty, but her eyes were filled with madness.
The cool evening breeze in City B was refreshing when the balcony door was open.
Nicholas was in the guest room having a video conference. Lisa prepared some fruit and asked Caroline to take it to him.
"Nicholas looks beat lately. He needs some good grub. Take this to him."
Caroline, feeling kinda stuck, grabbed the fruit and was about to knock on the door.
But she noticed the door was slightly open, and she could hear voices inside.
"Mr. Watson, Mr. Chambers from City G said you didn't take this project seriously. You bailed on City G before wrapping up the talks, so they wanna pull the plug on the deal."
"This project is huge for the Watson Group, Mr. Watson. I checked with the secretarial department, and your original plan was to stay for three days. Why'd you rush back?"
Caroline turned around.
Lisa saw she hadn't delivered the fruit.
"Isn't he eating?"
Caroline replied, "He's in a meeting. Not a good time to interrupt."
"Then take it to him later."
"Okay."
Caroline plopped down on the couch, mulling over what she just heard.
At ten PM, Lisa hit the sack, and Josie fell asleep with Caroline by her side.
Caroline came out of Josie's room.
She waited in the living room until eleven when Nicholas finally wrapped up his work and came out.
"Waiting for me?" Nicholas wheeled himself over.
Caroline nodded, "Yeah."
Nicholas was surprised she was really waiting for him, and he felt a surge of joy.
"Lisa prepped the fruit." Caroline glanced at it and awkwardly added, "I ate a bit."
Nicholas smiled pleasantly, not minding at all, and finished the rest.
"Because Daniel found out I'm his daughter, you're worried he'll come to claim me, and I'll lose control because of the Wolfs, so you rushed back to be with me?"
Nicholas paused for a moment and nodded.
"I don't wanna be away when you need me."
A warm feeling flowed through Caroline's heart, and she couldn't help but smile.
"Mr. Wolf has been trying hard to find you. I can see he loves you a lot. This time, he faced danger in City H and almost didn't make it back to see you."
Caroline's lips suddenly tightened.
She didn't actually dislike Daniel among the Wolfs, but because he was part of it, she didn't like him either.
She still longed for family and parental love, but...
"I'm tired."
Caroline didn't wanna discuss this topic for now.
She was more interested in finding out who wanted her dead.
Nicholas could tell she wasn't up for talking about it, so he dropped it.
At Evergreen Heights Medical Center, Daniel woke up to find Linda and Diana by his side.
"You're finally awake."
Linda's eyes were all red and puffy, clearly from crying. Holding Daniel's hand, she choked out, "Do you know you've been out cold for a whole day and night?"
Daniel's mouth was dry. He opened his mouth and said, "Water."
Diana quickly brought a cup of water.
"Dad, here's some water."
Linda helped Daniel sit up and fed him some water.
Daniel finally felt better.
His head was still a bit dizzy, probably from not eating, and his body felt weak.
"Why did you go to City H, and how did you get hurt like this?" Linda asked anxiously.
At that moment, Mia and Daisy arrived.
"Uncle Daniel." Daisy rushed in with red eyes. "I was so worried when I heard you were in the hospital."
Daniel leaned against the headboard, looking at everyone, and responded perfunctorily, "I'm fine."
"What did the doctor say?" Mia asked.
Linda replied, "He suffered a severe head injury and needs to rest."
Daniel's eyes were locked on Mia.
