Chapter 588 Watch Out!
A scream ripped through the air as Sophia spun around, just in time to see Jake boot the guy away.
Jake's eyes flashed with a fierce glint. He'd kicked the dude so hard he was flat on the ground, not getting up anytime soon.
Jake turned to Sophia, his expression softening. "You good?"
Sophia nodded. "Yeah, I'm alright."
Everyone was floored by Jake's kick. Sophia glanced over at Celeste.
"Grandma, let's head inside and let the cops deal with this."
Sophia was super worried about Celeste getting hurt.
Celeste shook her head and grabbed a megaphone, standing tall.
"I get it, folks, you want justice, but don't let these bad apples fool you."
A bunch of reporters were in the crowd, cameras rolling.
Celeste's voice was strong. "Here's proof the Browns are frauds."
"Logan, his wife Ella, and his mom Chloe tricked the Blackwoods by having his real daughter Patricia pretend to be my granddaughter to get our help and bail out the Brown Group."
"How would you feel if your long-lost kid turned out to be a fake?"
The crowd went dead silent. Logan, seeing everyone hanging on Celeste's words, started to sweat, worried she'd flip the script. He yelled out, "You're lying! The Blackwoods didn't lose anything, but the Browns are ruined."
Someone chimed in, "Yeah, the Browns are really in a bad spot."
Celeste shot back, "Do we deserve to be conned by you?"
With tears in her eyes, Celeste's painful question shut everyone up again.
"If this is true, why should the Blackwoods be the victims?"
Celeste signaled the legal counsel, who whipped out a document.
"This is Chloe's forensic report. She didn't die from kneeling in the snow but from an overdose, causing a sudden brain hemorrhage."
"Here's the doctor's prescription, showing the daily dosage, but Chloe took way more than she should have."
"So, Chloe's death was due to ignoring medical advice and has nothing to do with anyone else."
The document had all the official stamps, leaving Logan with no leg to stand on.
Reporters moved in closer, snapping pics, and those nearby could see everything clearly.
Logan's face twisted. "Don't believe them! This is all fake. They have tons of money; they must've paid to forge it."
"That makes sense."
Some folks were swayed by Logan's words.
But others thought it couldn't be faked, given the official stamps.
Sophia suddenly pulled out her phone and played a video.
Screams echoed from the phone.
The crowd went wild.
"That's Logan hitting someone."
"Isn't that his daughter he's hitting?"
"Oh my God, he actually abuses his own daughter!"
The crowd's looks at Logan shifted from pity to anger and disgust.
Logan scrambled to explain, "No, that's not me. It's fake."
"If the video's fake, what about the police report?" Sophia showed a photo of the police report Patricia filed about Logan's domestic violence.
"Man, what a piece of trash, abusing his own daughter. Bet Chloe's overdose was all his doing."
"Yeah, he probably killed his own mom. This guy deserves to rot in hell."
Realizing they'd been duped by Logan into attacking the Blackwoods, the crowd got even more pissed and started laying into Logan.
As things calmed down, Celeste let out a sigh of relief.
Just as Logan was getting the crap beaten out of him, Gabriel showed up with the cops.
A bunch of officers broke up the crowd, and Logan was left curled up on the ground, covered in footprints.
Without a word, the police slapped cuffs on Logan.
"Why the hell are you arresting me?" Logan squirmed, wincing in pain, missing a front tooth.
"We think you're tied to the Kelly Group murder case. Come with us for questioning."
Logan's eyes went wide with panic. 'No way, that old case? How's it coming up now?' he thought.
"What murder case? I didn't do it. You're setting me up."
"Whether it's a setup or not, you'll find out at the station."
The cops dragged Logan away.
Logan shot a desperate look at Gabriel, Sophia, and Celeste. Suddenly, a fierce look flashed in his eyes. He broke free from the cops, pulled a knife from his sleeve, and charged at Sophia.
"Watch out!"
"Sophia!"
Jake and Gabriel yelled together, rushing to save her.
But it was too late.
The sound of the knife piercing flesh echoed in Sophia's ears. Her eyes widened in terror.
"Grandma," she croaked.
Jake kicked Logan away, and Gabriel managed to pull Sophia aside.
Celeste, seeing Sophia unharmed, smiled and then collapsed.
Minutes later, sirens and ambulances filled the air.
In the ambulance, Sophia clung to Celeste's hand, tears streaming down her face.
"Grandma, don't sleep. Please don't sleep, Grandma..."
Sophia screamed in her heart, 'God, no! I finally found the family who loves me the most, and now Grandma Celeste is on the brink of death.'
Celeste's eyes stayed shut, her face growing paler, blood flowing more profusely. The doctor tried to stop the bleeding with clean cotton, but it was immediately soaked in crimson.
"Grandma, you haven't even worn the warm clothes I made for you. Please don't leave me."
Sophia kept talking to Celeste, trying to wake her up.
But Celeste stayed unconscious even when they reached the hospital.
Celeste was rushed into the emergency room. Sophia, covered in Celeste's blood, sat on the ground, wiping her tears, staring blankly at the door.
Jennifer, also pale, sat there. After a long time, she remembered to call Colin and David, but her hands shook so much she dropped her phone.
Gabriel picked it up first and said, "I've already called them."
Jake followed, seeing Sophia sitting on the ground, covered in blood. He took off his coat to cover her.
But Gabriel was quicker.
Jake bit his lip and draped his coat over Jennifer instead.
"Don't worry, Celeste will be okay."
Jennifer nodded, completely at a loss for words.
But with the younger generation comforting her, she felt a bit reassured.
