Chapter 527 Sophia's Mother

Patricia caught the heartwarming scene outside the ward right after she showed up.

She stood in the corner, fists clenched and pounding at her sides.

Patricia thought, 'I've liked Gabriel for ages, but in the end, it's Sophia who snagged him.'

Sophia dodged death a bunch of times and even popped out three kids for Gabriel.

Patricia almost ground her teeth to dust.

Sophia's luck was just too damn good.

So good it made Patricia crazy with jealousy.

She wanted to barge in and split up Sophia and Gabriel, but she held back.

After Celeste got the fever shot, her temp dropped a bit, but she was still out cold.

Jennifer didn't want the kids hanging around the hospital all the time. Since David had shown up, she told Gabriel and Sophia to take the kids home.

Once they left, Patricia wanted to check on Celeste but found David there.

Lately, David's stares had been creeping her out. She was always worried he'd figure out who she really was, making her hesitant to go in.

After David left, Patricia knocked and walked in.

"Aunt Jennifer, how's Grandma?"

Patricia walked over timidly, looking at the pale-faced Celeste lying on the bed, her eyes red with worry.

"It's all my fault, I made Grandma sick."

As she spoke, tears welled up in Patricia's eyes, her self-blame tugging at Jennifer's heartstrings.

Jennifer sighed.

"Patricia, you really upset Celeste this time."

Patricia's heart skipped a beat, and she cried even harder, sobbing.

Jennifer continued, "Stop crying, you'll disturb her rest."

Patricia immediately held back, but because she had cried so hard, her whole body was still shaking.

"It's getting late, you should go home."

Jennifer saw that it was already dark outside, and the snow had temporarily stopped.

Patricia shook her head gently. "I'm not going back, I want to stay here with Grandma."

"You just got out of the hospital yourself and need to rest. I'm here, you go home."

Patricia refused.

Jennifer had to be more stern. "Behave, don't make trouble."

Patricia's heart tightened. She looked up, tears flowing like a waterfall.

"Aunt Jennifer."

Jennifer handed Patricia a tissue, her voice softening a bit when she saw her like this. "Don't worry, go home first. Celeste is fine; she'll be able to go home tomorrow after she recovers."

Patricia didn't dare insist any longer. To keep up appearances, she nodded reluctantly and left with a worried face.

That night, David and Jennifer stayed at the hospital to watch over Celeste.

Celeste woke up midway and ate a little. By the next day, her fever was gone, but she was still a bit weak after being sick.

Ruth heard about Celeste's severe fever and hospitalization and came to visit early in the morning.

Gabriel and Sophia had both gone to work. Ruth came to the hospital alone, bringing Betty and the driver, James.

"Aunt Ruth." David and Jennifer stood up quickly when they saw Ruth.

Ruth waved her hand. "I'm just here to see Celeste, no need to be surprised."

"In this heavy snow, it's kind of you to come and see me." Celeste was already awake, lying weakly with a bit of a foggy head.

Ruth rolled her eyes at her. "Look at you, getting yourself sick over such a small matter."

Celeste smacked her lips but kept quiet.

David said, "Aunt Ruth, since you're here, we'll head home for a bit to tidy up. Colin will swing by later."

After pulling an all-nighter, neither David nor Jennifer had slept well. Jennifer, not being a spring chicken anymore, looked pretty worn out. David felt bad for her and wanted her to get some rest.

Ruth nodded. "Go ahead, I'm here. Don't sweat it."

David and Jennifer took off, leaving just Celeste, Ruth, and Betty in the room.

Ruth asked Betty to grab Celeste a glass of water. She also poured herself some warm water to heat up her hands.

"Celeste, I wasn't just blowing smoke yesterday. I really think Patricia isn't your real granddaughter."

Celeste's face changed a bit as she looked at Ruth.

Celeste stayed silent, and Ruth, seeing she wasn't getting shut down, took a small sip of water to warm up.

"When Austin Brown was alive, the Browns in City B were a big deal, on par with our Lancasters. Even though our families didn't hang out much, because of the Kellys, I knew some folks from the Browns."

"Other than Austin, the rest of the Browns were pretty shady."

Austin was Chloe's husband and Patricia's grandpa. After Austin passed away, Logan, Austin's only son, took over the Brown Group. Logan wasn't as sharp as his dad, and soon the Brown family went downhill.

"Except for Sophia's mom, that is."

Hearing this, Celeste looked puzzled. "Sophia's mom is from the Browns too?"

Ruth was surprised; she thought Celeste knew about Sophia's connection to the Browns. Turns out she didn't.

Ruth got excited and grabbed Celeste's hand.

"Of course, otherwise, how do you think the Browns managed to marry Sophia off to an old dude?"

So much had gone down yesterday that Celeste got sick before she had time to piece it all together.

"Celeste, look, Sophia and Patricia are the same age, their birthdays just a month apart. If the Browns wanted to mix things up, it would be a piece of cake."

"Sophia is also a Brown. Actually, I think Sophia might be your real granddaughter."

Ruth's words hit Celeste hard.

Before Celeste could fully process what Ruth was saying, Ruth kept going.

"My daughter-in-law and Sophia's mom were besties, so the Lancasters and the Kellys were tight. Because of this, Sophia and Gabriel's marriage was set up."

"My daughter-in-law was always one to stand up for her friends. She often told me about the crap Sophia's mom went through with the Browns."

"Even though she was their real daughter, the Browns treated Sophia's mom like dirt. After Austin died, they kept squeezing her for money, making the Kellys fork over tons of cash to the Browns."

Ruth remembered what Gabriel had said and lowered her voice, her tone getting more serious.

"And the deaths of Susan and Francis might not be as simple as they seem."

Celeste's eyes widened. After the high fever, her mind was buzzing, and she felt a bit lost.

Ruth was about to spill more when she noticed the door to the room move slightly out of the corner of her eye.

No idea when the previously closed door had cracked open.
