Chapter 554 Making Those People Embarrassed
Nicholas shot Daisy a frosty look.
"We'll know if he's mine once the test results are in."
He was dead sure Trevor wasn't his kid; he never hooked up with Daisy, not once.
He couldn't wrap his head around why Daisy kept saying Trevor was his.
When Daisy was pregnant, Nicholas wanted to do a paternity test to clear things up with Caroline, but he figured Daisy would flip out, so he decided to wait until after the baby was born.
Daisy's face went pale, and she stared at Nicholas like he had two heads.
"Nicholas, you were so sweet to me that night, don't you remember? How can you doubt me?"
Nicholas's forehead veins popped. "Daisy, don't test me!"
To Nicholas, Daisy was just trying to mess with Caroline's head. After warning Daisy, he glanced at Caroline, worried she'd get the wrong idea.
Caroline's face was a blank slate, but Nicholas's eagerness for the paternity test warmed her heart a bit.
Nicholas was really trying to set things straight with Daisy.
Caroline thought, 'Should I trust Nicholas more?'
Maybe nothing happened between him and Daisy.
Even without the test results, Caroline was pretty sure Nicholas was innocent.
Nicholas wheeled over to Caroline and grabbed her hand.
"The air here sucks, let's bounce."
Caroline nodded, stepped behind Nicholas, and took over from Sharpe to push him away.
When Nicholas wasn't looking, a tiny smile crept onto her lips.
Sharpe let out a breath and followed them.
Daisy, fuming, grabbed a pillow and chucked it.
Trevor was still bawling, and the nanny holding him didn't dare make a peep.
"Come on, crying won't fix anything! Your dad's doubting you're his, and all you can do is cry?" Daisy snapped at the nanny.
She was so mad her chest hurt, and tears started to fall.
Mia heard Daisy's outburst and rushed in. After getting the lowdown, she hugged Daisy.
"Don't get worked up, you're still healing. Getting all riled up right after giving birth isn't good for you. Chill out this month, and I'll help you deal with Caroline."
"Mom, Nicholas wants a paternity test. I'm scared Trevor isn't his."
Mia's face got serious. "Be straight with me, who did you sleep with?"
Daisy, eyes full of tears, drifted into a memory.
She remembered Nicholas being totally out of it from the drug that night. When she snuck into his room, he was lying on the bed.
"Nicholas's room was so dark, I couldn't see his face, but I could feel it," Daisy thought, feeling a bit embarrassed. "The bed smelled like Nicholas, it had to be him."
Mia comforted her. "Then don't worry. When the test results come out, it'll be Nicholas and Caroline who look like fools."
"Let's see if Caroline still has the guts to stay with Nicholas then," Mia said with a sneer.
Feeling better, Daisy picked up Trevor. Looking at the now quiet baby, she whispered, "You have to be Nicholas's kid."
Meanwhile, Caroline and Nicholas hopped into the car together.
As soon as they were settled, Nicholas grabbed her hand.
"Don't sweat Ms. Allen's situation. Those students were always troublemakers. Sure, she held back their diplomas, but they messed up big time and didn't even try to fix it."
"That paper Ms. Allen got an award for a couple of years ago? She did ask students for reference materials, but they weren't involved in the experiments."
Nicholas's eyes had this calming effect, like magic, making her feel at ease.
Caroline turned to meet his gaze.
"Yeah, I know. Thanks."
It seemed like Nicholas had always been looking out for her, handling these issues behind the scenes.
He'd helped with the public opinion against her, and now he was dealing with Melissa's troubles too.
"Don't worry, Ms. Allen just needs some time to clear her name."
"Yeah."
Caroline looked at his broad shoulders and back, feeling a sudden urge to lean on him.
But she held back.
She closed her eyes and pretended to nap.
The car was super quiet, no one said a word.
After a few minutes, Caroline spoke up, "Sharpe, can you take me to the school?"
Nicholas tightened his grip on her hand.
Sharpe glanced at Nicholas, understanding the unspoken message.
Half an hour later, they pulled into the school.
When Caroline got out, she saw Nicholas getting out too.
"I'm going to see Melissa. If you have stuff to do, go ahead."
"I'm free today."
Sharpe helped Nicholas get settled in the wheelchair.
"Miss Clark, you push Mr. Watson. I need to make a call."
Caroline had no choice but to walk around the car.
It was clear Nicholas planned to tag along to see Melissa.
Caroline and Nicholas took the elevator up, and Melissa was at her apartment. She was thrilled to see them.
"What brings you here?"
"Ms. Allen," Caroline's eyes were full of guilt. "I'm sorry."
"Why are you apologizing?" Melissa knew this whole thing was a setup.
At first, she thought it was a former colleague she had beef with, but then she remembered Caroline's report incident.
"Because of me, you got reported."
Melissa looked at Caroline, then at Nicholas.
"Come in first."
Caroline pushed Nicholas inside.
Melissa poured them some warm water.
"Don't worry, this doesn't bother me much. I've got the materials ready to refute those reports."
Caroline still felt super guilty. If Melissa's reputation got trashed because of this, she'd never forgive herself.
Melissa brought out some fruit and noticed Caroline and Nicholas holding hands, smiling.
"Caroline, remember, you're not the same person you used to be. You're not afraid of anyone."
Caroline looked up, her eyes sparkling like stars.
"Same here. As you grow, so do I. No one can take us down easily."
"And, follow your heart. Don't let yourself have any regrets."
Caroline got what Melissa was saying. She looked down at her hand intertwined with Nicholas's.
"Ms. Allen, thank you."
Melissa smiled and took a sip of coffee.
"If you want to make it up to me, promise me one thing."
"What is it?"
Melissa handed two sheets of paper to Caroline.
"Learn this piece of music. I want to hear you two play it together on my birthday."
