Chapter 766 Very Awesome
Alex remained silent.
Keith became interested.
"If you want to date, just go for it. With your qualities, plenty of women would be into you."
Alex pressed his lips together and still said nothing.
Keith continued, "I think you should have sorted out your love life a long time ago. By the way, isn't Angela from our class still single? She is quite formidable, always focusing on her career and not getting married. I heard her ex-boyfriend broke up with her because she was too career-driven. Why do women nowadays need to be so strong? Isn't it enough for men to earn money?"
Alex frowned, disagreeing with this viewpoint.
"It's not easy for women in the workplace, especially those over forty. Most companies won't consider hiring them. If they get married and have children early, their lives might revolve around their husbands and kids."
"If the husband treats her well, that's fine. But if he looks down on her for being a housewife and not keeping up with modern values, her likely outcome is divorce with kids and no financial stability."
"I think Angela has a clear life plan. She worked hard when she was young, achieved her career goals early, and accumulated wealth. Now, she can find someone to marry and have children. Her life experiences will help her filter out some bad men, reducing the trial-and-error cost of marriage."
Keith listened to Alex's long speech and said gloomily, "If you said all this in front of Angela, she'd definitely have a good impression of you."
Alex took a sip of his drink.
"Honestly, do you have a feeling for Angela?" Keith leaned in with a teasing look.
"I don't know."
Among the women Alex had met, he did admire Angela. She was independent and capable.
"Then that means you like her. How about I set you two up?"
Alex stared at his refilled glass, lost in thought.
Keith nudged his arm lightly. "What are you daydreaming about? Do you want it or not?"
"No need."
Keith pouted.
Alex, half-drunk, called a ride home. After taking a shower and sobering up a bit, his phone rang.
"Hello."
"Alex." Clara's voice was choked with sobs.
Alex's heart tightened. "What's wrong?"
"I, I..." Clara stammered, unable to speak through her tears.
Suddenly, the call disconnected.
Alex called back, but a cold female voice answered, "Sorry, the number you dialed is currently unavailable."
Alex's forehead veins throbbed. He quickly changed clothes, grabbed his phone, and rushed out.
He took a cab to the hospital.
The inpatient department was unusually quiet at night. Alex greeted a nurse and went straight upstairs to Clara's room.
As he opened the door, he heard soft sobbing.
The caregiver he had hired was not in the room.
"Miss Taylor, what happened?" Alex asked urgently.
Clara's sobbing paused, then she held back. "Nothing."
Her voice was full of grievance.
Alex's heart tightened, as if a hand was gripping it.
He didn't realize how worried he was about Clara.
"Then why are you crying?" Alex walked over, squatting in front of Clara, his voice much gentler.
Clara buried her head in the pillow. "You don't need to care about me."
Her words carried a hint of defiance.
Alex was puzzled. "Then cry, I'll stay here with you."
Clara was shocked, so she cried louder. Clara wailed loudly.
The sound could probably be heard throughout the inpatient department.
Alex hurriedly said, "Cry quieter."
Clara paused, then cried even louder.
"Who is it? Can't you let others rest?" A family member shouted angrily.
This floor of the international VIP ward was occupied by wealthy families, who paid for convenience and quiet.
Alex said, "See, people are complaining. Stop crying."
Clara's heart ached. 'Couldn't he even comfort me?'
To avoid being scolded in the middle of the night, Clara had to lower her voice.
She lifted her head, her eyes teary and pitiful, instantly touching Alex's heart.
"I feel terrible. Can you hug me?"
Clara's voice was small and cautious, her pitiful look like an abandoned rag doll, full of sadness.
Alex's face was expressionless, making it hard to tell what he was thinking.
Seeing his lack of reaction, Clara lowered her eyes in disappointment.
At that moment, Alex walked over, opened his arms, and hugged Clara.
His embrace was warm, broad, and strong.
Clara felt a warm current flow into her heart.
She slowly placed her hand on Alex's chest.
The feeling was amazing!
Unfortunately, she couldn't use much force, just lightly resting her hand there.
Clara leaned into his embrace and slowly fell asleep.
Alex wanted to ask what had happened but he didn't dare. Clara had finally stopped crying, and he feared she would start again if he asked.
Seeing her asleep, Alex laid her down.
However, as soon as Clara lay down, she frowned and clutched his shirt tightly.
"Miss Taylor."
Clara didn't wake up. Alex tried to pry her fingers open, but even in her sleep, Clara held on tightly.
He was afraid of waking her by using too much force.
Alex had no choice but to squat by the bed, planning to try again later.
Half an hour later, his legs were numb, and Clara's grip hadn't loosened. She even grabbed his arm with her other hand.
Alex was in agony.
Finally, he sat on the floor, his legs feeling like they were crawling with ants.
The next day, Clara slowly opened her eyes to see Alex's head.
Alex had spent the night by her bedside.
And she had held onto him all night without letting go.
Clara looked at Alex with a complicated expression.
Last night, she had intentionally held onto him, afraid he would leave after she fell asleep.
Later, she fell asleep and unconsciously held onto him.
She hadn't expected Alex not to wake her to let go but to stay by her side all night.
Clara was feeling touched.
She felt a bit sorry for him.
Clara finally let go.
The air conditioning wasn't too cold, and she didn't feel chilly under the covers, but Alex, without a blanket, felt a bit cold.
Clara pulled her blanket over to cover him a bit.
But Alex woke up.
Their eyes met, wide-eyed.
"Um, I was covering you with a blanket," Clara explained.
"Thanks."
He straightened up, shaking his numb hand.
Seeing his expressionless, somewhat indifferent face, Clara's heart pounded.
"Sorry for making you stay here all night."
"It's fine. Miss Taylor, are you feeling better?"
Clara nodded obediently like a well-trained puppy.
The current Clara was a far cry from the crying Clara of last night and the unreasonable Clara from before.
