Chapter 8

"I have the freedom to go wherever I want, but what about you? What gives you the right to restrict my exit? I haven't broken any laws." Sophia lifted her head, her cold gaze matching his intensity.
"Just because you're..." Gabriel paused halfway through his sentence.
Sophia seemed to have caught onto something, mocking him as she laughed, "Just because I'm what?"
Her mocking eyes made Gabriel feel uncomfortable, and he finally expelled two words:
"Ex-wife."
She had long known that she meant nothing to him, so when she heard the words "ex-wife," Sophia's heart remained unaffected, even bordering on amusement.
"I don't understand which law states that an ex-husband can restrict the freedom of his ex-wife." Sophia's hand was gripped by Gabriel, impeding the flow of blood and even causing her bones to ache faintly. She struggled, but Gabriel exerted even more force.
Gabriel furrowed his brow, "Regardless of the law, you must come back to the country with me."
Sophia laughed, then seized Gabriel's hand that was gripping her and bit down hard.
Instinctively, Gabriel flung her away, and upon seeing her about to fall, he reached out to catch her, but it was too late. Sophia was thrown to the ground, her tailbone throbbing painfully, causing her face to pale.
"Scarlett!" Leana screamed and rushed towards her.
It took Sophia several seconds to stand up with the help of Leana's momentum. Regardless of how painful her tailbone was, she seemed to feel nothing, standing upright with a cold and defiant look in her eyes.
"Why is it that you want me to divorce and I must divorce, want me to go back to my country and I must go back? You say I should make amends, but I don't feel like I did anything wrong. It is you who should apologize to me!"
She spoke each word clearly, each word carrying a sharpness, piercing through: "I faked my death because I had enough of your indifference. I don't want to live as a puppet, and I don't want to see you anymore."
"I just want to live my own life, a life unrelated to you!"
The coldness and disgust in her eyes were so unfamiliar to Gabriel. He still remembered the woman who used to look at him with admiration. Although she looked exactly the same as the person in front of him, everything about her was different.
Gabriel's eyebrows furrowed tightly as the spot she bit on him burned with pain. He stared at Sophia with a heavy gaze, his anger pounding in his head, the veins on his forehead bulging.
He took a step forward, and Leana immediately shielded Sophia behind her.
"What are you going to do to my friend?" Leana couldn't understand Chinese, but after observing for so long, she understood what was going on.
However, the next moment, she was restrained by two men dressed in black.
"Hey, what are you doing? Let go of me!"
Sophia's expression changed, furious: "Gabriel, let go of my friend."
"If you want me to let her go, come back to my country with me."
Leana was Caroline's friend, which made her Sophia's friend as well. Sophia didn't want to involve others, but she knew Gabriel too well. He was stubborn.
"What if I don't?" She thought she made herself clear enough, and any person with a conscience would stop bothering her.
