Chapter 422 Be Careful
Caroline had a rough pregnancy. She started throwing up at three months and didn't stop until she gave birth. She couldn't even keep food down.
While most people gain weight during pregnancy, she lost weight. There were even issues during her prenatal checkups.
Lisa teared up remembering that time. With a hoarse voice, she said, "If it weren't for Caroline's unique constitution, I would've told her not to go through with it."
Nicholas looked at the thick stack of medical reports and 4D ultrasound images. Josie, in Caroline's womb, had her little fists clenched like she was ready to fight.
His gaze softened. Seeing all this, he felt a mix of shock and emotion.
"The child Caroline struggled to give birth to was taken by the Watson family for six years, separating Caroline and Josie. Now that they're finally reunited, you want to take Josie away again."
Lisa's tone grew harsher. "Mr. Watson, have a conscience. Just because the Watson family is rich and powerful doesn't mean you can walk all over us. Caroline doesn't want anything from you, so leave her alone.
"And Mr. Watson, you already have a wife. Don't disappoint her."
Lisa's words made Nicholas realize the issues between him and Caroline involved not just their relationship but also the Watson family and Daisy.
Nicholas wanted to say he didn't have a wife, that he didn't know Caroline was pregnant because he was in a coma from a car accident. He wanted to say...
"Don't move!"
Four masked men with knives burst in, shouting, "Hand over all your money, now!"
Caroline froze, and Lisa was terrified.
Nicholas negotiated, "Take everything. Just don't hurt us. We won't resist."
Charles assessed the situation. He was the only one who could fight, but taking on four men alone would be tough. So, he followed Nicholas' lead and stayed still.
Two men approached. One held a knife to Charles' neck, while the other watched Nicholas, Caroline, and Lisa.
A disabled person, an elderly person, and a fragile woman posed no threat.
The other two men started ransacking the place.
Caroline saw them heading towards the room.
"Josie," she pleaded, "my child is in there. Please let her come out and be with us. We won't resist."
One of the intruders noticed Caroline's beautiful face, her delicate skin with tears in her eyes. He swallowed hard.
He hadn't expected such a beautiful woman.
The intruder's mask glinted coldly, but his eyes showed a hint of lewdness.
He walked towards Caroline and lifted her chin with the back of his knife.
"Mommy." Josie's cry came from the room.
Caroline's heart tightened, and she wanted to save Josie.
But the intruder pushed Caroline onto the sofa and started tearing at her clothes.
"Charles!" Nicholas shouted coldly.
Charles moved swiftly. He elbowed the intruder hard in the abdomen, then grabbed his knife-wielding hand. With a forceful twist, the knife fell to the ground, and Charles threw the man aside.
As Charles made his move, the other three men rushed in, and a fierce fight broke out.
"Go get some help!" Nicholas shouted to Lisa.
Lisa snapped out of it, stumbled, but quickly got up and ran outside.
Caroline also got up to find Josie.
One of the intruders pulled out a small hunting rifle and aimed at Lisa, then shifted his aim to Caroline.
Nicholas saw it, his eyes widening. He maneuvered his wheelchair towards Caroline.
"Caroline, watch out!"
Caroline was holding Josie, unaware of the danger. Nicholas used all his strength to shield her.
But another figure suddenly leaped in.
A gunshot rang out, and everything went silent.
Caroline only heard the echo of the gunshot.
Blood dripped down, landing on her face and eyes, blurring her vision.
"Nicholas," she called, her heart aching, her voice trembling.
"I'm here," Nicholas quickly responded.
Caroline's heart eased a bit as she heard his voice.
She tried to move but found the weight on her too heavy.
Lisa had called for help, and the four intruders smashed a window and fled.
The room was in chaos. Rescuers lifted Charles, who was on top. He had been shot in the head, and the blood on Nicholas and Caroline's faces was his.
Nicholas half-held Charles, his eyes red.
Charles still had a bit of consciousness. He tried to say something.
Nicholas commanded, "Don't speak. Save your strength. The ambulance is on its way."
Charles persisted, using his last bit of strength to say, "Thank you... and sorry..."
With that, Charles closed his eyes, his head drooping.
Blood continued to flow, covering Nicholas' face, body, and hands, and pooling on the floor.
The ambulance arrived, and the police sealed off the area. They all went to the hospital.
Outside the emergency room, Caroline held Josie tightly, comforting her while worrying about Charles inside.
The blood in her hair had dried, clumping a few strands together, and she looked disheveled.
"Nicholas, Caroline!"
Paul came running, out of breath.
He had been in another city and rushed over as soon as he got Nicholas' call.
Seeing the blood on both of them, Paul asked anxiously, "Are you hurt? Get a doctor to check you out."
Nicholas replied, "We're fine. The blood is Charles'. He was shot in the head and is in surgery."
Paul frowned and said, "This area has such good security. How could there be a home invasion in broad daylight?"
"Paul, go assist the police with the investigation."
Paul nodded. "I've already sent someone. I'll stay here with you until Charles comes out."
Nicholas said nothing more.
Paul arranged for a nurse to get a room.
"Nicholas, Caroline, you should go to the room and get cleaned up. I'll stay here."
Nicholas said, "Caroline, you take Josie."
Caroline looked at the trembling Josie in her arms. She stood up but almost fell due to numb legs. Paul quickly moved to take Josie, but Josie clung to Caroline's clothes.
Paul had to help Caroline stand up.
Lisa also followed them to the room.
In the room, there were clothes Paul had asked the nurse to buy nearby.
