Chapter 425 So Petite
Sophia gritted her teeth, refusing to let whatever it was come in.
Her eyelids felt like lead, and opening them took all her strength.
"Gabriel?" she rasped.
Gabriel gently touched her forehead.
"You've got a fever. Take this medicine," he said softly, his voice soothing.
He helped her sit up. She looked pale and felt weak.
Leaning against the headboard, Gabriel held a pill to her lips.
"Come on, open up," he coaxed gently.
Sophia opened her mouth, and Gabriel placed the pill inside. Realizing she needed water, she took the glass from him and drank it all.
Her mouth was parched, so she downed the whole glass.
"Get some sleep," he urged.
Feeling awful, Sophia quickly fell asleep but sensed something was off before drifting off.
'How did Gabriel get in?'
She wanted to ask but was too tired.
Forget it, she'd just ask later.
Gabriel watched her sleep, his worry evident. He decided to stay by her side, checking her temperature every half hour.
Gabriel was usually in good shape, but a recent bout of acute gastritis had left him weak, and he had a high fever after getting caught in the rain.
He recovered quickly, but Sophia caught it easily, showing how weak she was.
Gabriel's eyes were full of concern.
Seeing her sweat from the fever, he grabbed a towel to wipe her down.
When she kicked off the blanket, he covered her again each time.
Luckily, he had experience with Emma.
Around 4 AM, Sophia's fever finally broke, and Gabriel felt relieved enough to sleep by her side.
At 7 AM, Sophia woke up, feeling something on her hand. She moved slightly, waking Gabriel.
He checked her forehead.
"Your fever's gone," he sighed in relief.
Sophia felt drained. Though the fever was gone, her head was still dizzy and empty.
"Want some water?" Gabriel asked gently.
She nodded.
Gabriel fetched a cup of warm water. After she drank it, he went to the kitchen to make some porridges.
He called Alex from the kitchen.
"Postpone anything non-urgent. Handle the urgent stuff, and call me if you're unsure."
Alex replied, "Got it."
'Why am I working so hard?' he sighed. Harrison went abroad with his girlfriend, leaving his work to Alex. Gabriel had to take care of Sophia, so his work also fell to Alex.
Gabriel definitely owed him a raise!
Sophia got up to wash and take care of herself. She wasn't fit for work, so she called Margaret to let her know and then went back to bed.
She was hungry but had no appetite.
Gabriel brought in the porridge and saw she had fallen asleep again. He sighed and woke her up.
The rain had stopped in the middle of the night but started again. The yard was full of water, and it was about to flood the steps.
He frowned. Waiting for help would take too long, and the water might flood the house.
Gabriel grabbed a raincoat and tools to handle it himself.
A clap of thunder woke Sophia. Disoriented and with her heart racing, she couldn't fall back asleep.
She got up, put on a coat, and walked out of the room.
'Gabriel should have left by now, right?' she thought.
Touching her forehead, she frowned. It felt like her fever was back.
Seeing a figure in the yard, she walked to the window and saw Gabriel in the rain, clearing the drainage.
He had moved her potted plants under the eaves to protect them from the rain.
Watching him work so hard, Sophia felt a mix of emotions. Why was Gabriel being so kind after hurting her so badly?
Tears fell from her eyes, and her head felt even dizzier.
Gabriel didn't have this kind of experience, and it took him a while to drain the water.
The house was old and had its issues despite maintenance.
Gabriel put away the tools and took off the raincoat, noticing Sophia standing there with a complicated expression.
"Why are you up? Still feeling unwell?"
He quickly changed into slippers and came in, touching her forehead.
"You're burning up again. Go back to bed."
Sophia didn't move. Staring at his concerned face, she felt warmth in her heart.
Seeing her dazed, Gabriel picked her up.
To his surprise, Sophia obediently wrapped her arms around his neck.
Gabriel felt a bit joyful. A sick Sophia was so docile.
Her fever came and went for four days. The family doctor visited daily, and when awake, Sophia video-called the kids with a filter on, afraid they'd notice.
The kids rarely got to go out and play, and Sophia wanted them to enjoy it without worry.
The weather finally cleared, and Sophia recovered.
Gabriel had taken care of her the whole time.
'He's so attentive. Has he ever taken care of Tiffany like this?' Sophia wondered, feeling a pang of discomfort.
"Gabriel, thank you," she said sincerely.
Gabriel looked worn out from several sleepless nights, making Sophia feel even more guilty and grateful.
"If you really want to thank me, cook for me a few times."
"Okay," Sophia agreed without hesitation.
Gabriel was surprised by her quick agreement and felt a bit unaccustomed.
Sophia said, "There's not much food in the fridge. I'll go buy some."
Gabriel grabbed her hand, making her turn to face him.
"Do it tomorrow. You just recovered. Don't overexert yourself."
His concern made Sophia feel flustered.
They suddenly fell silent, and the atmosphere grew warm and intimate.
The temperature around them seemed to rise.
Gabriel looked at her long eyelashes, delicate nose, and now rosy lips, his breathing becoming heavy.
Standing in front of him, Sophia seemed so small, making him want to protect and cherish her.
Suddenly, Gabriel pulled her into his arms.
