Chapter 773: I Like You

Harrison patted him on the shoulder. "Exactly, I think Clara is a good match. Clara is older anyway, you two are just right for each other."

If Clara heard what Harrison said, she would probably fight with him.

Harrison said, "I heard you guys ran into each other on this business trip, and you took care of Clara for a night. Oh, and Clara took care of you for a night too."

Ruth asked curiously, "What do you mean by 'took care'?"

"They both got drunk, and then..." Harrison said ambiguously, as if something had happened between them.

Ruth immediately put away her iPad and said seriously, "Alex, if that's the case, you can't let Clara down. Besides Clara, I won't introduce you to anyone else."

"I always thought you were a responsible and dependable kid. You need to give Clara an explanation for this. You can't let her be heartbroken."

Ruth said directly, "Let me be honest with you. The reason I called you here today is actually Clara's idea. Clara likes you. Tell me, do you like Clara?"

Hearing Ruth's words, Alex fall into deep thought. By the end, he was completely stunned.

'Clara likes me? Really likes me?' Alex pondered.

"Clara is shy. She's afraid of being rejected if she confesses to you, so she asked me to be the middleman. If you don't like her, I'll quietly tell Clara, and you two can pretend this never happened." Ruth said.

"Anyway, I have plenty of excellent men here. I can introduce someone else to Clara." Ruth added.

"I like her." Alex lowered his head and said softly.

Ruth smiled and asked, "What did you say?"

Harrison said, "Speak up, what's wrong with saying you like someone?"

Alex said, "I like Clara."

Ruth laughed, "That's great. I'll invite Clara over to the house tomorrow."

"No need, Ruth. I'll tell her myself." Alex said.

Ruth was even happier.

Harrison and Alex left the Lancaster Manor together. Alex was driving, and Harrison sat in the passenger seat, looking at Alex with a meaningful gaze.

Harrison questioned, "Honestly, how long have you and Clara been together?"

Alex pressed his lips together and didn't speak. His mind was very complicated.

Harrison said, "I really didn't expect it, Alex. You made a big splash with Clara, such a difficult woman to deal with, and you managed to win her over."

Everyone in their circle knew each other's personalities. To Harrison, neither he nor Gabriel would like someone like Clara.

Harrison mumbled curiously for a long time but got no response from Alex.

In the end, he could only shut his mouth in frustration.

On Sunday, Clara was resting at home. She slept late and didn't get up until noon.

"Clara, drink the soup quickly." Cynthia made soup for Clara every day at home.

Clara obediently drank the soup. Her phone on the table rang, and she casually picked it up.

Alex asked, "Are you free?"

Clara answered, "What's up?"

She asked in the same tone Alex had used before.

Alex replied, "Thank you for taking care of me that day. If it's convenient, I'd like to treat you to dinner tonight."

Clara was unhappy. 'Will their contact end after dinner?'

Clara thought for a long time but eventually agreed reluctantly.

After lunch, Clara started looking for clothes in her walk-in closet.

Cynthia heard Clara's movements and walked in, seeing a pile of clothes on the bed.

"Are you getting rid of these clothes?" Cynthia asked.

"No, I'm going out today." Clara held two dresses in her hands, comparing them against herself. "Mom, which one do you think looks better?"

All her clothes were the latest styles of the season, filling an entire walk-in closet. She couldn't wear them all even if she changed three times a day. Often, when she cleaned out her closet each season, she would find that half of the clothes still had their tags on.

Cynthia's focus wasn't on the clothes.

"What are you going out for? A date?" Cynthia questioned.

Seeing Clara make such a fuss over picking clothes, Cynthia thought she was meeting someone important.

Cynthia's eyes lit up. "Sweetie, are you dating someone?"

Clara quickly denied it, "No, it's just an ordinary friend I haven't seen in a long time, so I want to dress up a bit."

"Is it that senior from your college days?"

"No, Mom, does this look good?"

Cynthia helped Clara pick out clothes while trying to dig deeper, but Clara kept her mouth shut. No matter how much Cynthia asked, Clara wouldn't say, or she would change the subject.

"Let's go with this one, and do a fresh makeup look." Cynthia pointed to a floral dress.

Clara's mouth twitched. Honestly, this dress wasn't her style.

But thinking about Alex, that simple man, maybe he would like this style.

They agreed to meet at 6:30 p.m., but Clara left at 4:00 p.m.

Alex also dressed up at home, wearing a formal suit and even getting a haircut. He carried a box and a bouquet of flowers as he set off.

He arrived at the restaurant half an hour early.

Clara sat in her car, watching Alex get out of his car with the flowers. He used the car window as a mirror to adjust his tie and hair.

'What is he planning?' Clara wondered.

Clara had arrived at 5:00. She didn't want to wait in the restaurant too early and make Alex think she was too eager, so she waited in the parking lot for an hour.

After another ten minutes, Clara couldn't stay calm anymore and got out with her bag.

Alex was already sitting in the lobby.

As soon as Clara appeared, his eyes locked onto her.

"Over here."

Clara walked over at the sound.

Alex got nervous and gentlemanly pulled out a chair for Clara.

Clara sat down and glanced at the bouquet.

"These are for you." Alex clumsily handed her the flowers.

Clara didn't take them.

Clara asked, "Why are you giving me flowers?"

Alex was so nervous his palms were sweating.

"I, I, I..."

'Should I say it now?' Alex pondered.

His plan was to say it after dinner.

Forget it, whatever.

"I like you, Clara. Will you be my girlfriend?"

Clara was stunned, her pupils constricting.

'Did I hear that right?' Clara was surprised.

"What did you say?"

Alex repeated the exact same words, so simple, without any embellishment.

Clara's heart was pounding.

She had thought about many things before coming, but she hadn't expected Alex to confess.

Even when she saw him with the flowers, she thought he was just thanking her for taking care of him.

Alex felt disappointed when he didn't hear Clara's response, but he looked at her with determined eyes.

"I actually liked you a long time ago. I just didn't dare to face my feelings. I know the gap between our family backgrounds is huge. I firmly believed we were from two different worlds and that it was impossible between us."

"I even tried to erase the feelings in my heart, but I failed."

"Yesterday, Ruth told me a lot, and I finally realized that I had trapped myself in the framework of family background."

"I'm sorry for responding so late."

"Now, would you still be willing to be my girlfriend?"
