Chapter 531 Everything Under Control
Celeste squinted, piecing it all together. No wonder Patricia's room was spotless, and that toothbrush? Totally different from the one she used before. Celeste had just assumed Patricia swapped it out 'cause it was old.
Ruth chimed in, "No way a room's that clean without a single hair. Patricia must've cleaned up after hearing you wanted to redo the paternity test."
Celeste frowned. "So, what's the plan now?"
"I got an idea. You..." Ruth leaned in, whispering something in Celeste's ear.
Celeste's eyes lit up, and she nodded. "Ruth, you're still as sharp as ever."
"Of course! Emma got it from me. She's a smart cookie," Ruth said, beaming with pride.
Thinking about those three kids, Celeste couldn't help but feel a pang of envy.
"Celeste, it's your time to shine."
A spark of determination flashed in Celeste's eyes. This whole thing just confirmed Patricia was hiding something.
Celeste wasn't feeling great, so Patricia stayed at The Brown Mansion for the night. The next day, when Patricia heard Celeste was discharged and back home, she rushed over to show concern.
She massaged Celeste's legs and fed her medicine, all while Celeste played it cool, acting like nothing was up.
When Patricia went to her bathroom, she noticed the toothbrush she had swapped out was gone, replaced with a new one.
She walked out and casually asked, "Grandma, why's everything in my bathroom been replaced?"
Celeste, looking all relaxed, said, "Those things were old. I had the maid switch 'em out. Why, you miss 'em?"
"No, Grandma, you shouldn't stress over little stuff like that. Your health's what matters."
"Alright. Oh, by the way, the doc's coming this afternoon for a check-up. You should get checked too," Celeste said, like it was no big deal.
"I don't need it. I'm fine."
Celeste grabbed her hand, looking all concerned. "Head injuries can be serious. You need regular check-ups to make sure you're okay."
"But..."
"No buts. Didn't you say you'd behave from now on?"
Celeste's stern tone shut Patricia up.
In the afternoon, the doctor came to check on Celeste. Jennifer stayed with her, while David and Colin were off doing something secretive, leaving early and coming back late.
Jennifer wanted to ask but never got any answers.
After a quick check-up, the doctor said, "Mrs. Celeste Blackwood is recovering well, but she still needs to take it easy. Keep her diet light and make sure she stays warm."
"Got it, thanks," Jennifer said, getting ready to see the doctor out.
Then Celeste spoke up, "Oh, and check Patricia too. She had a concussion a few days ago."
"Sure thing."
Patricia sat down. The doctor exchanged a look with Celeste, then pulled out a blood-drawing needle.
Patricia frowned. "Do you need to draw blood?"
The doctor explained, "Yeah, we need to test it at the hospital."
Celeste and Jennifer both looked at her with concern, so Patricia had to play along to keep up appearances.
The doctor also checked her eyes and asked some questions.
"There's no major issue, but take it easy for the next couple of weeks. Come back for a brain CT in a month."
"Got it."
Jennifer saw the doctor out and headed back to Celeste's room.
"Grandma, Aunt Jennifer, I'm feeling kinda dizzy. Gonna head back to my room to rest."
"Alright, go rest up. You've been through a lot. I'll have the maid whip up your favorite dinner," Celeste said, all loving and concerned.
Patricia left.
"Jennifer, you can get back to your work too."
"Okay."
Jennifer left, feeling like Celeste had been acting kinda weird since she got discharged, but she couldn't put her finger on it.
Jennifer thought, 'Why's everyone in the family acting so strange lately, like they're hiding something from me?'
It made her feel super uneasy.
With a ton of work waiting for her at Fusion Dynamics Corporation, Jennifer didn't dwell on it. She gave the maid a few instructions and then left.
Back in her room, Patricia was quietly chatting with Ella on the phone about the doctor's visit.
Ella said, "Wait, the doctor drew your blood?"
"Yeah." Patricia didn't think much of it. Blood tests were pretty standard.
But Ella sensed something was off. "That's weird. Why would they need more blood? Didn't they take enough when you were in the hospital? All the tests were done."
"Mom, you mean... But the toothbrush is already gone."
"No, to be safe, I need to contact the central hospital's test center to see if they got a blood sample."
Listening to Ella, Patricia started to get nervous.
The more she thought about it, the more she felt like she had walked right into their trap by agreeing to the blood draw.
If they really took her blood for identification and she and Ella didn't find out, the truth would come out.
Patricia broke out in a cold sweat.
Meanwhile, Celeste was also on the phone with Ruth.
"Ruth, the doctor has drawn the blood."
"Okay, got it. I'll handle the rest. Just sit tight."
"Thanks, Ruth."
"No problem. Just rest up. Sophia's worried about you."
"Okay, tell Sophia I'm fine and not to worry."
Ruth hung up the phone.
She tapped her fingers lightly on the wheelchair armrest and then called Betty.
"Tell James to get the car ready. I need to go out."
"It's snowing heavily right now," Betty said, a bit worried.
"It's fine. Just tell James to drive slow."
This was something she had to handle personally.
Ruth didn't want the Browns to use Celeste's identity to gain power and then come back to mistreat Sophia.
Ruth personally went to the central hospital's test center and handed the two samples to the doctor.
Afterward, she didn't leave the hospital immediately but had James wait outside.
The heavy snow had thinned out the pedestrians, but the traffic in and out of the hospital was still steady.
About half an hour later, James returned. He put away his umbrella, got into the driver's seat, and said urgently, "Ruth, I saw Ella's car from the Browns."
"Okay, I know. Let's go home."
James was stunned. He thought Ruth had asked him to keep an eye on Ella to cause trouble for her.
But they just went home without doing anything.
Ruth smiled slightly and thought, 'Everything is under my control.'
