Chapter 650 Cold as Bone
Seeing Sophia's dazed look, Gabriel couldn't help but smile. He leaned in and kissed her forehead.
"I'll whip up some breakfast for everyone."
With that, Gabriel gently moved Sophia's hand away.
The kids were around, so even if he wanted to do more, he couldn't.
Gabriel moved carefully, and Sophia finally snapped out of her awkwardness, rolling over to hug Emma.
Emma sleepily cracked her eyes open, then closed them again, snuggling back into Sophia's arms.
But Sophia couldn't fall back asleep.
This was the first time she'd woken up in Gabriel's arms, except for that one time years ago.
She had this weird, indescribable feeling in her heart.
A few years back, she had dreamed of waking up in Gabriel's embrace every day, but things had gone south.
Now that her long-cherished dream had come true, Sophia still felt a flutter in her heart, but there was also something else.
A lot of thoughts raced through her mind at that moment.
Sophia's face turned red, but she managed to pull herself back from the edge of chaos.
There was one question she couldn't figure out.
She knew Emma had a bad sleeping posture, but she herself slept pretty still.
She wondered, 'So how did I end up rolling into Gabriel's arms? I slept so soundly last night and didn't feel a thing! Could it be that I was too tired from playing with the kids yesterday?'
She couldn't ask the three kids, and she couldn't directly ask Gabriel, so she decided to act like nothing had happened.
After lunch, they were supposed to head back to City B.
But out of nowhere, it started pouring rain.
Gabriel frowned. "I checked the weather forecast; it said it would be sunny today."
The road back went through a mountain path, and heavy rain could easily cause landslides. For safety's sake, Sophia decided to wait until the rain stopped.
Gabriel plopped down on the couch.
"That's fine. The villa's stocked with food and drinks; we can stay another day."
Sophia noticed Gabriel seemed pretty happy about it.
The three kids were busy playing with building blocks on the carpet.
By evening, the rain was still coming down hard when suddenly there was a knock on the door.
Gabriel got up.
"I'll check it out."
The servants had been given the day off after preparing dinner yesterday, so today it was just their family in the villa.
'Who could it be at this hour?' he thought.
Gabriel stayed cautious. From the surveillance camera, he saw two drenched figures outside. Recognizing one of them, he turned off the screen and returned nonchalantly.
Sophia asked, "Who is it?"
"Don't know them." Gabriel sat back on the couch and resumed working on his laptop.
The doorbell rang again, persistent and unyielding.
The three kids looked up towards the door.
Sophia said, "I'll go check."
Before Gabriel could react, Sophia walked to the entrance and saw Jake on the surveillance screen.
When they arrived, Sophia had checked the surroundings. Because the area was still under development, there were no residents for miles around.
Sophia hurriedly opened the door.
"Sophia!" Jake's eyes lit up with surprise when he saw her.
Sophia looked shocked. "What are you doing here? Come in quickly."
Jake and his assistant Micah were drenched, shivering from the cold rain outside.
Sophia quickly let them in and handed them some towels.
Gabriel closed his laptop as Jake stood in the middle of the living room, meeting Gabriel's displeased gaze.
The three kids ran over when they saw Jake.
"Jake!"
Jake said, "Don't come too close; I'm all wet."
So the three kids stood a few feet away from Jake.
"Jake, what are you doing here?" Ethan was thrilled to see him.
He hadn't seen Jake in ages.
"I came here for work, but got caught in the rain. My car broke down, so I came to seek help and ran into you guys."
At this point, Sophia brought over some towels, and Jake's words seemed to be an explanation to her as well.
"You should take a shower and change your clothes so you don't catch a cold."
Sophia handed them the towels and added, "I'll find you some clothes."
Jake flashed a bright smile. "Thanks, Sophia."
Gabriel was very unhappy, extremely unhappy.
Jake was everywhere they went.
Sensing how concerned Sophia was, Gabriel felt even more uncomfortable. He wanted to kick Jake out but was afraid Sophia would be upset.
Besides, the three kids liked Jake a lot.
Gabriel frowned tightly.
It seemed he needed to find a way to make the three kids dislike Jake.
Sophia arranged a guest room for Jake and Micah, then came to Gabriel.
"I remember you brought a couple of extra sets of clothes."
Gabriel grunted, "Nope."
Sophia poked his arm with her finger.
"Once the rain stops, we'll let them leave."
She knew this was a bit difficult for Gabriel, but she couldn't help it. She couldn't bring herself to turn Jake away in the rain.
To her, Jake had once saved her and treated her well. She couldn't leave him out in the rain.
Gabriel knew very well how much Sophia cared about Jake. After all, it was his own fault that had allowed Jake to take advantage.
Gabriel lowered his head in silence. Noticing his softened attitude, Sophia smiled.
"Thank you. I'll make you something delicious later."
Gabriel's mood brightened with her last sentence.
"You said it, something delicious."
"Yes!"
The rain showed no sign of stopping. Sophia cooked a table full of dishes and invited Jake and Micah to join them.
Although Gabriel was unhappy, he was satisfied to eat Sophia's cooking.
As for the annoying Jake, he just wouldn't look at him.
"Jake, I have to tell you, I've gotten better at chess recently." Ethan clung to Jake.
"Jake, I've improved too, I..." Emma also clung to Jake.
Sam put down his bowl and gestured excitedly.
Seeing the three kids clinging to Jake, Gabriel's fleeting good mood vanished completely, leaving only frustration.
At ten o'clock, the rain finally stopped, but due to the heavy rainfall, driving at night was still risky. Plus, the maintenance personnel hadn't arrived yet, so Jake and Micah had to stay the night.
Sophia brought blankets to Jake.
The guest room door was slightly ajar, and she could hear bits of their conversation.
"We've lost another day. Mr. Getty will be upset." This was Micah's voice, cold and emotionless.
"I'll explain to my father."
Jake's voice was different from usual, cold as ice.
Sophia felt a strange sensation in her heart.
