Chapter 469 Persuade Him
On her first day at work, there wasn't much to do. Caroline was very familiar with her alma mater and saw many familiar people in the office.
Many of her former classmates had chosen to stay at the school after graduation.
During their casual chat, Caroline learned that some classmates had entered the entertainment industry and were doing well, some others no significant updates, and others still had switched careers to go into business.
As they reminisced about their careers, someone suddenly said, "By the way, Caroline, I remember you used to date Nicholas from the Business School. You two were quite the pair—talented and beautiful. So many single guys and girls from both departments envied you."
This topic sparked even more conversation.
Nicholas was the most handsome guy in the Business School and a well-known figure in the entire school, while Caroline was ranked among the top in terms of beauty in the Music School.
The relationship between Nicholas and Caroline made many people envious.
Everyone was enthusiastically talking about these things, not noticing that Caroline's smile was becoming strained.
"Are you two still together?" someone asked cautiously.
Caroline slowly shook her head. "We broke up."
The atmosphere became a bit awkward upon hearing this. They had been talking so excitedly, not realizing they were touching on a sensitive topic for Caroline.
Caroline said nonchalantly, "It's okay, it's all in the past."
"Honestly, we were quite sorry to hear you broke up, but everyone has their own path to go through. We all have to move forward. When one door closes, another opens," a cheerful teacher said. She then asked curiously, "So, are you married now?"
"Not yet."
"Single?"
Caroline nodded slowly.
The atmosphere became a bit fraught for a few seconds. The teacher joked, "We have many young professors in our department, some of whom are quite good-looking and single. We should get together sometime and introduce you."
Caroline knew the teacher was trying to lighten the mood, so she smiled cooperatively. "Sure."
Everyone had classes to teach, but Caroline didn't have any scheduled on her first day.
Teaching at the Music School was much more demanding than teaching at a kindergarten; she needed to put in more effort.
After everyone went to their classes, Caroline was left alone in the office. She turned her computer on and took out a notebook to start preparing her lesson plans.
As she worked, her thoughts began to drift.
Every corner of the campus was incredibly familiar to her.
She had walked every path on campus with Nicholas.
Returning to the campus after so many years, she still felt as if the air was filled with his presence.
Those recent conversations had indeed stirred up many memories for her.
Her phone screen lit up with a call from an unknown number.
Caroline remembered that this number had called several times in the morning.
It didn't look like a telemarketing call, and since she had some time, Caroline answered it.
A slightly weathered voice of a middle-aged woman came through. "Is this Caroline?"
"Yes, it is."
"I'm Nicholas' mother. I'd like to talk to you. When would be a good time?"
Caroline fell silent.
She didn't like the Wolf family, nor did she like the Watson family.
She had no reason to meet with Nicholas' mother. "Sorry, I'm really busy with work lately and might not have time."
Gummidge said, "Then I'll keep it brief."
Caroline didn't want to say much, but hearing Gummidge's gentle and deferential tone, she decided to listen.
"Ms. Clark, as a mother, I believe you can understand a mother's pain. Nicholas has broken ties with the family because of you."
'Broken ties?' Caroline's heart trembled slightly.
She listened quietly.
Gummidge continued, "His father has been in poor health since a serious illness. He can't overexert himself or experience emotional upheaval. Because of this, he's still bedridden and has lost a lot of weight.
"Ms. Clark, I mean no harm. I know you must love Nicholas too. Could you please persuade him to come home for his own good?"
Gummidge was at her wit's end. Nicholas wouldn't answer her calls, wouldn't reply to her messages, and when he did pick up, he would hang up after a few words.
Nicholas had broken ties with the family because of Caroline, so she thought Caroline would be the perfect person to persuade him.
Caroline took a deep breath and said lightly, "I'm sorry, I can't help you with this."
"Why?" Gummidge didn't understand. She thought Caroline would agree. After all, it was for Nicholas' own good.
"This is Nicholas' own matter. As an outsider, I have no right to interfere. I'm afraid I'm the wrong person to ask for help from."
Gummidge wanted to say more, but Caroline didn't want to continue the conversation. "I have things to do. Goodbye."
After hanging up, Caroline stared at her lesson plans, too agitated to continue writing.
'Has Nicholas really broken ties with his family because of me?'
The next moment, Caroline smiled bitterly. 'How am I responsible for that?'
Caroline shook off those messy thoughts and forced herself to focus on her work.
At the Wolf Villa, Daniel and Linda had already taken Diana to Country M for treatment, accompanied by Declan and his wife.
Daisy was at home resting, her belly already showing signs of pregnancy. Mia had the housekeeper prepare various delicious foods for her every day, and Daisy had gained quite a bit of weight.
Daisy was particularly attentive to this child. She actively attended all the prenatal classes Mia had signed her up for, making her days very fulfilling.
Her only goal was to give birth to this child safely and then shock everyone. She wanted to see the immense pain that it would cause to Caroline.
For the past two months, she hadn't dared to look for Nicholas, fearing he wouldn't want the child. But she also wanted Nicholas to know how she was going through with this pregnancy.
So, Daisy posted three Tweets every day, always making sure to remind Nicholas to see them.
From her room, Daisy could hear her parents outside. They were arguing again.
She frowned, looking very annoyed.
She really didn't want to deal with these family issues, but the constant arguing was making her irritable, which wasn't good for the baby. Daisy had no choice but to go out and settle things.
"Dad, Mom, stop arguing!" she shouted from the second floor.
The two people downstairs stopped trading verbal blows.
Seeing Daisy on the stairs, Mia said anxiously, "Don't stand there, it's dangerous. Go back to your room."
Michael waved his hand. "Yes, go back to your room. This is none of your business."
"How can I rest and take care of the baby with you two arguing every day?" Daisy complained.
Daisy was carrying the Watson family's heir, and Michael was counting on her to marry into the Watson family for his own benefits.
"I'm not arguing with this fool," Michael said, grabbing his coat and preparing to leave.
"You're going to see that mistress again!" Mia's voice was sharp, her face twisted by the desire to tear that woman apart.
