Chapter 158: How will Sophia survive?
During their playtime, Grandma casually plucked two strands of hair. Emma, who was happily playing at the time, didn't notice. Although her attention wasn't fully on their play, she faintly felt a slight stinging sensation. At first, she thought it was just an illusion.
Today, when school ended, her intuition told her that Grandma's behavior towards them was a bit strange. So, Emma secretly observed Grandma, and when she saw Grandma exchanging glances with Betty, Betty left the room.
Emma wanted to figure out Grandma's intentions, so she took the opportunity to use the restroom and coincidentally saw Betty putting the hair into a transparent bag.
Why did Grandma pluck their hair?
Emma crossed her arms and sank into deep thought.
The only thing she could think of was a paternity test.
What? A paternity test?
Emma's heart sank. Did Grandma suspect their identities?
What did they do to make Grandma suspicious?
Every time they visited, Grandma was too preoccupied playing with them to ask about their parents.
Could it be that she secretly had someone investigate their identities?
This was not good.
If Grandma found out their identities, it meant that their despicable father would also know. In that case, would he try to take them away from Mommy?
Although they would definitely choose to live with Mommy, their despicable father had money, power, and status. If he insisted on taking them away from Mommy, she wouldn't stand a chance.
Just standing here for a minute, Emma had already thought of many things.
Grandma wouldn't have enough time to send the hair samples to the hospital tonight. She would probably go tomorrow. She had to find a way to switch the hair samples.
Sam and Emma couldn't expose their identities!
"Emma, why are you just standing here?" Betty came out looking for her.
"I saw a classmate after using the restroom, and we were talking to each other," Emma made up a random excuse.
"Where is your classmate?"
"Umm, she already left."
Betty didn't doubt her and took her back to the private room.
Madam didn't eat much of her hotpot meal, but Sam was completely satisfied.
So, this was hotpot, and it was more enjoyable when eaten with friends and family.
Sam fell in love with hotpot.
However, he could only have the clear broth.
Even with the clear broth, Madam still worried about his stomach.
"Emma, where do you live? Grandma will send you back home," Madam thought she could take this opportunity to see where the two children lived.
Maybe she could even meet their parents?
As long as she saw their parents, she wouldn't need to wait for the results of the paternity test to know if they were her long-lost great-grandchildren.
"Grandma, I..."
"My mommy is coming to pick us up."
Quickly snatching Emma's words, Sam glared at her displeased but quickly understood.
What is Emma trying to do?
Sam held onto Emma's small hand and lightly scratched her palm with his pinky, conveying a message to her, coordinating with him.
"Um, Mommy said she's coming to pick us up."
Madam suddenly became a bit excited, her palms sweating in suspense, as she would finally see the mother of the two children.
Could it be Sophia?
Caroline had stopped the car across the street and waved at Emma, signaling her to come over. Since she had to turn around, she simply stopped on the opposite side.
As Caroline was about to come over to pick them up, Emma gestured towards her great-grandmother.
"Great-grandma, we're going back now."
"Goodbye, great-grandma."
The two children held hands and crossed the street, while Madam quickly asked Betty to accompany them. Since there were no cars on the road, the two children ran over quickly, even though Betty couldn't catch up.
"Forget it, come back," Madam squinted her eyes and looked at Caroline across the street.
"Look, is that Sophia?" she asked Betty.
Betty's eyesight was better than hers, and after taking a glance, Betty recognized her.
"It's not Madame."
Madam's figure swayed slightly, and she sighed sadly, lowering her head.
"I was too anxious."
Sam didn't understand why his great-grandmother suddenly felt sad. Was it because she didn't want to part with Emma?
The little one grabbed his great-grandmother's hand, pulled it, and looked worried.
"Good grandson, let's go home too."
Afraid of affecting the children, Madam quickly concealed her grief and got into the car.
When they returned home and Sam went upstairs, she asked Betty.
"Is the hair properly stored?"
"It's properly stored." Betty took it out to show Madam.
"Tomorrow, you personally go to a reputable agency. I want the fastest and most accurate result."
"Okay, I'll go first thing tomorrow morning." Betty knew how important this matter was to Madam and she couldn't trust anyone else to handle it.
Caroline asked Emma about meeting Madam, and she told her about her great-grandmother pulling their hair to have a paternity test.
"So that's why you said that I was your Mommy?"
Emma suddenly realized; no wonder she seemed so alert.
It's a good thing that she picked her up, otherwise, all would have been revealed.
With Caroline as a cover, Madam still wasn't certain whether the children were descendants of the Lancaster family or not.
"Auntie, we still need your help with this matter."
Caroline readily agreed, "No problem."
She didn't want these two adorable treasures to be taken away by the Lancasters.
Sophia's family took Caroline and the kids out for a hot pot, but they kept it a secret from Sophia.
She thought Caroline was just taking the kids out for dinner, so she casually handled her own dinner at home before sitting down to sew.
Feeling the cold weather, Sophia felt that the children's clothes were not enough, and she needed to make them a set of warm clothes.
When she heard the commotion outside as Caroline and the kids returned, Sophia turned her stiff neck and glanced at her phone. It was already past nine o'clock.
There were several unread messages on WhatsApp, and Sophia couldn't help but want to clear the unread count. She opened the messages.
Jake Hughes: "Sis, what are you doing? What are you doing?"
Jake Hughes: "Sis, you're ignoring me again."
Jake Hughes: "Sis, if you don't respond to me, I'll get angry."
Jake Hughes: "Sis, you have such a cold heart. At least I saved your life, and this is how you treat a lifesaver. They say when someone saves your life, you should give yourself to them, but I never asked you to give yourself to me. I just want you to share a meal with me, but you won't even do that."
This drama queen!
Sophia smiled helplessly and quickly replied to the messages, lest Jake Hughes send another essay complaining about her "heartlessness."
Sophia: "I was busy making clothes just now. Sorry."
Jake Hughes replied instantly: "Sis, are you a fashion designer? Can you make a set of clothes for me?"
Sophia: "Let's have a meal first."
Jake sent a disappointed emoji, and seeing his face in her mind, Sophia couldn't help but feel a soft spot for him.
But in the end, she resisted the impulse. Besides work, she would never make clothes for anyone privately, except for her children.
Even Vincent had never worn clothes made by her own hands. Moreover, she didn't feel close enough to Jake yet.
Despite him saving her, there were many ways to repay him. Sophia decided it was time to treat him to a meal and arranged to meet on Sunday.
