Chapter 413 Further Away
Daisy believed Caroline couldn't do anything to Mia.
She planned to spend some money to bail Mia out.
But things didn't go as smoothly as she thought.
Daisy took a few deep breaths to calm down.
No matter what, she had to protect her child first.
Since Nicholas didn't acknowledge the child or her, she was even more determined to have the baby.
Only then could she secure her position and drive Caroline away.
It was already dark, and Mia had to stay at the police station overnight. For someone like her, it was a humiliating experience.
Her family couldn't bail her out or even see her.
Josie was scared, too, so Caroline stayed with her.
Around 11 PM, the door opened quietly, and Caroline immediately woke up but stayed still.
Nicholas came in, sitting in his wheelchair. He didn't turn on the main light, just the warm yellow wall lamp. He went straight to the bedside, first looking at Josie, then at Caroline.
In the dim light, Caroline's face was swollen, her lips chapped, and there were scratches on her neck.
Nicholas clenched his fists, the room's temperature seemed to drop.
He silently vowed to make them pay.
Nicholas wheeled himself over to Caroline. She tensed up, pretending to sleep.
He stared at her, a pained look in his eyes, but smiling faintly as he knew she was pretending.
He slowly reached out and pulled the blanket over her exposed shoulder.
Then, he adjusted the air conditioner to keep the room comfortable.
After a few minutes, Caroline heard the door close and finally relaxed.
She didn't open her eyes. She didn't want to face Nicholas.
She needed to think about what to do next.
Caroline buried her face in the pillow, her tears soaking it. She didn't cry out loud, afraid of waking Josie, and didn't go out, afraid of running into Nicholas.
She felt like a lonely, withered leaf, drifting aimlessly.
Outside, Nicholas didn't leave. He stood with his back to the door, looking very lonely.
The next day, Caroline came out with Josie, and Molly had breakfast ready. Nicholas also came out.
"Daddy," Josie was still shaken and ran to Nicholas.
Nicholas patted her head. "It's okay now. No one will bully you again."
Josie shook her head. "I wasn't bullied. Mommy was."
Nicholas looked at Caroline.
Her face seemed even more swollen, and his anger rose.
"I'm sorry I wasn't there yesterday and let you suffer," Nicholas said softly.
Caroline's face was cold. "I hope you can explain our relationship to your family clearly, Mr. Watson, so they don't misunderstand again."
Nicholas felt that after Mia's mess yesterday, Caroline was even more distant.
He gritted his teeth and said, "Okay."
At the police station, Mia's hired goons were released in the morning.
Mia was the main culprit, so they were let go after one night.
But soon after, mysterious people grabbed them and beat them up badly.
The two who had restrained Caroline got it the worst and were left by the trash cans.
These guys were usually unemployed drifters, hanging around suburban alleys, stealing and harassing women, so they had it coming.
In the morning, Caroline went to the hospital for a check-up.
This time, she was determined to use the law to protect herself.
She had done nothing wrong and was beaten and humiliated for no reason.
After the check-up, she went to the police station and a law firm.
Caroline told Sophia about it.
Sophia thought for a moment. "Why don't you take Josie to Harbor Bay first?"
Caroline refused. "Nicholas won't let me take Josie out. Don't worry. I can handle this. I'm not easy to bully."
Sophia said, "Send me the video of her hitting you, and I'll help you expose it."
"Unless necessary, I don't want to use public opinion," Caroline said.
She could expose Mia, but Daisy would accuse her of being Nicholas' mistress. No one would believe she was just his nanny.
Caroline could also use Daisy's child-stealing incident, but she didn't have enough evidence and it would expose Josie.
The last thing she wanted was for Josie to get hurt.
As long as she insisted on suing, someone from the Wolf family would come to negotiate, and then she could set her conditions.
At Harbor Bay, it was Gabriel's first visit since Sophia and the kids moved in.
Looking around, he remembered when his parents first brought him to the Kelly family as guests.
He was twelve, and Sophia was nine.
The parents chatted about the kids' studies, and his mom said he was good at studying and should help Sophia with her homework.
He was a prodigy, having finished high school courses by twelve. Sophia was struggling with a math problem.
He vaguely remembered that he was being disdainful, then writing the solution on scratch paper for her to figure out.
Even though it was a long time ago, the memory suddenly became clear. Gabriel remembered Sophia's wide-eyed, admiring look, which was very cute.
Alex didn't know what Gabriel was reminiscing about and rang the doorbell.
After a while, the door opened, and Alex reminded Gabriel.
"Mr. Lancaster."
Gabriel snapped out of it and walked in.
His face had always been a bit pale, but today, as Sophia saw his color restored, her eyebrows raised slightly.
She couldn't stop Gabriel from visiting the kids, so she let him in.
After a while, Gabriel was sitting on the floor playing with the kids.
Alex was outside on the phone, and Sophia went to the yard to water the flowers.
After hanging up, Alex saw Sophia and smiled, nodding slightly.
As he was about to go in, Alex suddenly stopped.
"Ms. Kelly."
