Chapter 268: Something's Off
Alex rushed into the CEO's office.
"Boss, the kidnapper that got away has been caught."
Gabriel looked up.
Alex swallowed hard and continued, "Someone beat him up and left him at the front door of the police station."
Their team was also working with the police to continue the chase. They had a lead and were about to close in when they suddenly realized that the kidnapper had disappeared.
Then, just like that, the kidnapper had been dumped outside the police station.
Gabriel furrowed his brows. Who was secretly investigating the Sam kidnapping incident? And what was their motive?
He certainly didn't think it was a friend.
"What did the police say?" Gabriel asked.
"After the kidnapper was taken to the hospital and revived, he seemed to be mentally unstable."
The severity of the beating made even Alex cringe.
"What about Raskolnikov Rodion's men?"
He couldn't be sure if this was connected to the person who tried to drug Sophia the other night.
"We discovered someone lurking near the young master's kindergarten yesterday."
A knot of concern tightened at Gabriel's brow.
"Increase security!"
"Yes, sir!"
Since the judges of the competition came under investigation, Sophia had been much more at ease. Kathy, on the other hand, was not having a great time.
She had invested so much just to get Randall to put in a good word for her with Stark Arya.
If she could get an internship at Fusion Dynamics Corporation, her worth would skyrocket after the experience.
The opportunities that Fusion Dynamics could afford her were numerous.
It was all Sophia's fault for taking up a spot in the competition; otherwise, she could have participated and won Stark Arya's favor.
Kathy had been ready to laugh at Sophia's misfortune when, within days, the officials announced an investigation, and Randall had become its prime focus.
She had given her all to Randall, only to end up with him under investigation.
Would Randall still be able to secure that advanced training spot at Fusion Dynamics Corporation for her?
When Sophia emerged from the restroom, she was met with Kathy Caroline's sullen gaze.
Kathy Caroline stared at her in silence, sending shivers down Sophia's spine. She ran out without even washing her hands.
After work, as Sophia drove home, she noticed a car behind her acting suspiciously.
She took a couple of detours, only to find that the car kept following at a steady pace.
Despite trying twice to shake it off, she was unsuccessful.
In the end, she drove straight to the police station, thinking it would scare the follower away. To her surprise, the car trailed her all the way there.
With gritted teeth, she bolted from her car towards the police station.
The police quickly came out and surrounded the vehicle.
The driver stepped out, resigned.
After explanations and communication...
...
Having left the police station, Sophia pulled out her phone to call Gabriel.
"Gabriel, I don't need your protection. Call your people off!" she demanded.
Gabriel's calm voice came through.
"Raskolnikov Rodion had some close friends. Your help in suing Raskolnikov Rodion and getting him convicted for The Parkers has surely upset them. One of them is now working in a fast-food restaurant across from your condo complex."
On the surface, it looked like a job, but it might actually be a way to monitor Sophia's every move.
Sophia then remembered the fast-food restaurant outside Flora Garden.
She hadn't considered the possibility that Raskolnikov Rodion's connections could trace back to her aid for The Parkers.
Her complexion turned paler as she recalled the night she was almost drugged.
And then there was Ethan Emma!
Sophia retorted, "I'll hire my own security; I don't need your arrangements."
She hung up and immediately contacted Vincent.
Vincent had joined a martial arts club in college and likely knew some insiders.
Indeed, Vincent quickly recommended a security company to her.
Without hesitation, Sophia contacted the firm, and after a straightforward negotiation, paid them. The next morning, three tall and burly men appeared at Blue End.
Ethan Emma blinked.
"Mummy, they look so scary," Emma whispered, anxiously hiding behind her mother.
"They're here to protect you, don't be scared, they won't hurt you."
"Like David protects Sam?"
"Yes."
Two people were assigned to safeguard Ethan and Emma, and another person to protect Sophia during her commute to and from work.
They only worked during the day, and there was no need for guards at night.
Gabriel had originally planned to continue discreet protection, but after noticing someone following Sophia to work, he withdrew the extra person and instead reinforced the security around Sam. Now Sam was surrounded by security so tight, it seemed not even a mosquito could get near him.
Ethan and Emma noticed that mom had been keeping them at home lately, not allowing them to go out and play as much.
The twins sensed something unusual was going on, so they behaved exceptionally well.
But that weekend, they had promised to visit Josie's place.
Emma pleaded with mom for a long time, using all her charms and cuteness, until she finally got her way.
Sophia had agreed to go out with Mrs. Arya and had to ask Caroline to take the kids to the Watson residence.
Upon arriving at the Watson family estate, Caroline parked at the entrance.
She had once been humiliated and trampled upon there, a feeling of physical aversion keeping her from stepping foot inside.
"Just have the bodyguard uncle come in with us, and godmother can pick us up later," Ethan, picking up on something, kindly suggested.
"I'm sorry, godmother can only take you this far."
Caroline felt guilty, but she really couldn't overcome this emotional hurdle.
"It's okay, godmother, don't feel bad," Emma comforted her.
Ethan and Emma walked on, followed by their two bodyguards.
Josie had been eagerly waiting at the doorstep.
It was her first time inviting friends over, and she had been so excited she couldn't sleep the night before.
When Josie saw Ethan and Emma approach, she ran to greet them.
"Emma, you're finally here, come on in!"
"Wow, your house is so big!"
Yet, it wasn't as large as their bad boy daddy's house.
Josie asked Ethan and Emma to sit down, then she ran to the kitchen to pour them drinks and brought some fruit from the fridge.
Emma stared with wide eyes, "Don't you have a housekeeper?"
Why would Josie need to do these things herself?
At their bad boy daddy's house, housekeepers were always around to offer pastries, fruit, and beverages.
Josie just naturally said, "The housekeepers are busy, I can do these things, I want to take care of you guys."
Mom said you should take care of your own friends.
She had seen that when her mom's friends came over, her mom would always serve them delicious food and drinks.
So she prepared tasty treats for Ethan and Emma herself.
Emma always felt that Josie's house was a bit strange.
The maids and nannies also seemed peculiar.
"Emma, do you want to watch a cartoon?" Josie asked.
"I want to go to your room and play with toys."
Josie led them to her room.
Upon entering, Emma's eyes widened, "Your room is so small..."
Why did Josie, who lived in such a large villa, have such a tiny room?
It was even smaller than her and Ethan's room!
And it didn't have a pink bed or beautiful paintings.
There was only one Barbie doll for toys.
