Chapter 556 Crying Bitterly
"I've been waiting for you to explain, but you ghosted me for days. Then Daisy drops the bomb that you two are getting engaged."
Hearing Caroline's words, Nicholas finally dredged up a memory from way back.
That night, he had gone to a party for Aragorn and got so hammered that he blacked out, no clue how he ended up back at his place.
Next morning, Nicholas wakes up to find Daisy in his apartment, and he's only in his boxers. He was sure that in his drunken state, he couldn't have done anything with Daisy.
That day, Daisy told him she was just taking care of him on Aragorn's assistant's orders.
Nicholas shook his head. "What you saw wasn't real, Caroline. Listen, the engagement between the Watsons and the Wolfs was my grandpa's idea. I've always been against it and trying to find a way out."
"At that time, my dad was sick, and I had to help at the company. He wanted to force me to get engaged to Daisy, so he spread the news."
"And that day, I was wasted from the party. There's a guy at the company who can back me up."
Caroline's heart wavered. She had thought about this but got more and more disappointed waiting for his explanation, only to hear about his engagement to Daisy. Eventually, she gave up and broke up with him.
"There was so much going on, and the pressure was killing me. I didn't want to stress you out. I thought I could explain everything after sorting out the engagement with Daisy."
"But before I could fix it, I got your breakup text."
Caroline's tears started falling, catching her off guard.
"But I came to find you later. I was pregnant, and the doctor said if I terminated it, I might never have kids again."
Caroline cried, "Do you know how desperate I was? I tried everything but couldn't reach you."
Nicholas's heart ached as he held Caroline tight.
Caroline, thinking back to that time, got overwhelmed. She didn't hear Nicholas clearly and just let him hold her. The words she had bottled up for years came pouring out.
"The Watsons, the Wolfs, they were all on my case. The orphanage was my only home, but I almost lost that."
Nicholas's grip tightened as he kissed the back of her head.
"I'm sorry, I'm so sorry, Caroline. I didn't know you went through all that. It's my fault. I even hated you for so long."
He wanted to slap himself.
Nicholas cursed himself inwardly, 'What right do I have to hate Caroline?'
It was his fault for not clearing things up with Daisy sooner. It was his fault for ignoring her feelings and for so easily believing Daisy's lies, thinking Caroline had abandoned Josie.
He was such an idiot.
Caroline cried loudly in Nicholas's arms, letting out all the pain she had held in for so long.
She pounded her fists on Nicholas's arm.
"It's all your fault, you jerk. Why did you make me go through it alone? Why did you leave me? Why!"
Nicholas's mouth went dry. He opened his mouth but couldn't say anything, just kept repeating, "I'm sorry."
He hadn't ghosted her on purpose or left her to handle childbirth solo.
Back then, he had been in a car accident and was stuck in a coma in some foreign hospital.
Caroline cried her heart out, and Nicholas felt like his heart was breaking right along with hers.
Lisa quietly closed the door, went back to sit by the bed, and let out a deep sigh.
Josie opened her eyes and asked softly, "Is Mommy crying?"
Lisa nodded. "Yeah."
"Did Daddy make Mommy cry?" She tried to get up, all worried.
Lisa gently held her down. "No, sweetie. Your daddy didn't make Mommy cry."
"Then why is Mommy crying?"
Josie was so anxious her eyes started to water.
"Your mommy watched a movie, and it was super touching, so she cried."
'So Mommy's just moved by a movie,' Josie thought, feeling relieved.
Emma had said she sometimes cried when watching TV too.
Josie lay back down, hiding under the covers.
"Then I won't go out to find Mommy. I'll wait until she's done crying."
Lisa lovingly patted Josie's head.
After a while, Caroline cried herself to sleep on the couch. Nicholas found a blanket to cover her and turned up the heat.
It was getting late, and he needed to head to the office.
Josie opened the door and came out.
"Daddy," Josie called softly.
"Yeah?"
Josie walked over. "Daddy, you gotta protect Mommy and not let her cry."
Nicholas's eyes softened, wondering, 'Did Josie hear Caroline crying?'
"Okay, Daddy promises to protect you and your mommy and not let her cry again."
Josie smiled, her eyes turning into little crescents.
Nicholas kissed her forehead.
Josie also kissed Nicholas's cheek.
"Daddy, go to work and make lots of money so Mommy can go shopping."
"Okay!"
Nicholas took the paternity test back to the office and calmly placed the report in his desk drawer.
Sharpe was puzzled. "Aren't you gonna show it to Mr. Aragorn Watson?"
"It's not the right time yet."
Sharpe was even more confused, thinking, 'Shouldn't the truth come out ASAP?'
Nicholas looked at his computer screen, his eyes cold.
"Go buy some nutritional supplements and kids' clothes and send them to Daisy."
"What?" Sharpe was super confused, thinking, 'Doesn't Nicholas dislike Daisy? He must be worried about the kid, right? Nicholas is such a good guy.'
Sharpe went to do as instructed.
Meanwhile, Daisy was over the moon to get the clothes Nicholas sent.
"Mom, Nicholas must know this kid is his, so he sent these things."
Mia also smiled. "Well, at least he's not a total jerk."
"Nicholas is a responsible man. He'll definitely come back to me."
Daisy held the baby clothes up to Trevor.
"Trevor, your daddy finally acknowledged you. Are you happy?"
Trevor started crying loudly.
Daisy's face turned cold. "What? You don't want Nicholas to be your daddy?"
Mia laughed. "Trevor's a baby, he doesn't get it. He probably just wet himself."
Sure enough, when they checked Trevor's diaper, he had wet himself.
Daisy happily told Aragorn about Nicholas sending the stuff.
"He finally did something to make me happy," Aragorn said to Gummidge.
Gummidge also smiled.
"Trevor is Nicholas's son. He won't ignore Trevor."
"Tell him I'm planning a celebration for Trevor's one-month birthday and tell him to get ready."
"Okay."
