Chapter 621 Reminder
Caroline unwrapped the snacks and passed them around to the teachers in the office. Everyone got a bowl of that healthy soup.
After that day, Clayton started bringing food for Caroline every single day, always leaving it on her desk so she couldn't say no.
But one day, Clayton not only brought food but also waited for Caroline to show up. He pulled her aside and slipped her a bank card.
"This card's from Mom. She wants you to buy whatever you want."
Caroline tried to give it back, but Clayton just shoved it into her hand and took off.
Caroline was left standing there, feeling kinda lost.
She stared at the bank card, and her calm heart started to feel all sorts of things again.
At 3 p.m., Linda showed up at a café near the music academy, out of breath.
In her rush, she twisted her ankle getting out of the car but still jogged into the café.
Her cheeks were flushed, and she looked super apologetic as she cautiously asked, "I'm sorry, am I late?"
Caroline replied, "No, I got here early."
Linda glanced at Caroline and, seeing she was calm, felt a huge wave of relief.
She sat down across from Caroline and called the waiter. "Caroline, get something to eat. The ice cream here is good. Want some?"
Caroline shook her head, "I'm good with coffee, thanks. You go ahead and order."
Linda had no choice but to get a coffee for herself too.
Caroline had invited her out, which made her really happy, but it was so sudden she hadn't had time to dress up.
She also hadn't had time to get a gift for Caroline.
Thinking about it, Linda felt pretty regretful.
"Here, take this back." Caroline took out the bank card, placed it on the table, and pushed it over.
She said, "I don't need money."
Linda felt a pang in her heart and quickly pushed the card back.
"I'm giving this to you not because you need money, but because you're my daughter, and I want to give you the best."
Caroline replied, "But I don't need the best."
Linda's face went blank, and her eyes filled with hurt.
Caroline suddenly realized she had hurt Linda. She lowered her head, wanting to say something to make up for it but didn't know what to say.
She felt really conflicted inside.
The atmosphere stayed awkwardly silent for several minutes.
Linda suppressed the pain in her heart. "Caroline, I'm sorry for the past. Even if you can't forgive me, please don't refuse the things I give you, okay?"
Tears fell from her eyes, dropping into her coffee and making ripples.
Caroline panicked a little.
She hadn't expected the once dignified Linda, a lady from a wealthy family, to cry.
She suddenly felt tongue-tied and couldn't speak for a long time.
Linda continued, "If you don't want it, then forget it."
She picked up the bank card and tossed it into the trash can.
"Something you despise is better off thrown away."
Caroline stayed silent, thinking, 'What is going on?'
"Caroline, tell me, what do you need the most? Whatever you need, I'll give it to you." Linda wiped her tears.
She felt so embarrassed, crying in front of Caroline.
She wondered what Caroline thought.
'Will she think I'm useless?' Linda brooded.
Caroline helplessly handed her a tissue.
Linda took it, surprised.
Caroline didn't despise her and even handed her a tissue.
Noticing Linda had stopped crying, Caroline said, "I don't need anything, but I do want to know the truth. How did I get lost when I was a kid?"
Linda stiffened, and tears almost fell again. She didn't know why she had become so prone to crying lately.
"I'm sorry," she lowered her head. "It's all my fault. I accidentally lost you."
"I know, it wasn't you; it was someone else."
"What?"
"Why did Mia stop you from finding me? Diana was mistaken for me; did she really not know?"
Recently, Linda had been focused on repairing her relationship with Caroline and hadn't thought deeply about other matters. Hearing Caroline's words, she became serious.
"Diana said Mia threatened her."
"If she was threatened, why didn't she tell you immediately? Why did she wait until she was discovered to tell you?"
Linda frowned and mused, 'Caroline is right.'
She thought about it and quickly understood.
Caroline continued, "And the last time Diana was bullied by thugs, everyone assumed I stood by and did nothing."
Linda said guiltily, "I'm sorry, Caroline."
Caroline interrupted her, "I'm not trying to dig up the past. I just want to remind you to be careful of Mia and Diana."
Linda nodded seriously. "Okay, I understand. Caroline, I will find out how you got lost back then, and I'll be wary of Diana."
Caroline finished the last sip of her coffee and then stood up. "I have a class to teach. I have to go."
Linda was reluctant. She had only sat with Caroline for ten minutes and still had so much to say. "Be careful on your way."
Caroline responded, "You too."
Caroline slung her bag over her shoulder and, out of the corner of her eye, saw the trash can. She stopped, bent down, and picked up the bank card. "Don't give me anything else in the future."
After saying that, she left without waiting for Linda's reaction.
A joyful smile slowly appeared on Linda's face. 'Caroline has accepted the bank card I gave her!' Linda cheered in her heart.
Caroline sat in the car, staring blankly at the bank card. This time, she had only used the excuse of returning the bank card to meet Linda and remind her to be careful of Diana. Although she still harbored some resentment towards Linda, she was also worried that Linda would continue to be deceived by Mia and Diana.
After talking with Caroline, Linda immediately went to the Wolf Group to find Daniel. She shared her doubts with Daniel.
Daniel smiled and said, "I've thought of all the things you mentioned. Don't worry, I'm investigating, but we don't have enough evidence yet."
Linda continued, "If Caroline hadn't come to me with these things, I probably wouldn't have thought about them. Daniel, why am I getting dumber?"
Daniel's eyes widened. "Caroline came to you? Why didn't she come to me!"
Linda glared at him. "What's wrong with that? It means she still cares about me."
Linda was extremely proud.
Daniel thought, 'If Caroline doesn't come to me, I would go to her!'
So after work that day, Caroline saw Daniel. Daniel walked up to her very happily. "Caroline, can we have dinner together?"
Caroline hesitated.
Daniel continued, "I booked a table at your favorite restaurant."
Caroline was puzzled and wondered, 'How does he know which one I like?'
Daniel immediately explained, "I asked Nicholas."
Seeing Daniel's expectant eyes, Caroline couldn't bear to refuse. "I promised Josie I would have dinner with her tonight."
"Then let's pick up Josie together?"
