Chapter 423 So Much Blood

After Caroline got Josie to sleep in the hospital room, she changed clothes and freshened up.

"Lisa, you should rest too."

Lisa shook her head. "I'm fine. Go check on the surgery. I'll watch Josie."

"Okay."

Caroline walked to the operating room.

The surgery was over.

Nicholas was listening to the doctor.

"The bullet was in a dangerous spot. Luckily, it was just a regular hunting rifle, not too powerful. If it had hit his head, he wouldn't have made it," the doctor said.

"But he's still not out of danger. We don't know if he'll wake up."

Charles's life was saved, but his injuries were severe. He might be bedridden for life.

"Nicholas, this is the best outcome," Paul said, trying to comfort him.

The shot was to the head. Paul had thought Charles wouldn't survive.

Nicholas's voice was hoarse. "I know."

Soon, Charles was moved to the ICU.

"Caroline," Paul said, relieved to see her unharmed.

Nicholas looked up, too.

"Josie is asleep. I came to check on Charles," Caroline said.

Charles got hurt protecting Nicholas, who was shielding her. So, in a way, Charles saved her life too.

"Nicholas, you should go take a shower and change. We have a lot to do." Paul suggested. "Caroline, can you help Nicholas clean up?"

Caroline, limping, pushed Nicholas to the hospital room.

"Where's Josie?" Nicholas asked.

"She's asleep. Lisa is with her."

"Okay."

After a while, Nicholas asked quietly, "Are you okay?"

She must have been terrified.

Caroline also whispered, "I'm fine."

She was scared but had calmed down. She wondered why robbers targeted her house. She had never shown off her money, got along with neighbors, and the area had good security.

'Why my house?' she thought. 'Is it just bad luck?'

A limping woman, an elderly person, and a child—they seemed like easy targets. 'Or is someone specifically targeting me?' Caroline frowned.

Paul had someone bring men's clothes and then left.

Nicholas took the clothes, frowning.

Caroline noticed his frown and asked, "What's wrong?"

"Usually, Charles helps with my daily needs. Now that he's bedridden, I..." He looked embarrassed.

Caroline understood but there was no one else around.

"I'll find a nurse for you," she said.

"No need. You can help me."

Caroline hesitated but eventually pushed him into the bathroom.

Nicholas took off his shirt, revealing his tanned upper body.

He didn't have abs, which made sense since he couldn't work out his legs. But he looked strong in clothes, and without them, he was lean with no excess fat.

Especially his waist, which was very slim.

She remembered he used to have abs. Caroline's gaze shifted to his legs.

'What happened to his legs?' she wondered.

"What are you looking at?" Nicholas noticed her staring and blushed a bit.

Caroline snapped out of it. "Nothing. Your pants..."

"I can't do it myself. You help me."

Nicholas unzipped his pants and left the rest to Caroline.

Caroline mentally prepared herself. 'I've seen his body before. Why am I being so squeamish now?'

'I'm not being intimate. I'm just taking care of him because he saved me.'

'Yes, just like a nurse.'

Caroline took a deep breath. When Nicholas propped himself up on the handrails, she quickly pulled his pants down.

Oops, she pulled down his underwear too.

Nicholas was silent.

Caroline also fell silent.

The atmosphere was awkward.

Nicholas chuckled lightly. "Help me put them on."

Caroline looked away and helped him dress.

At some point, her breathing became rapid, and her heart raced. She fumbled and took half an hour to help him change into clean clothes.

When Caroline pushed Nicholas out, Paul came in.

"Nicholas, Caroline, why are your faces so red?"

Nicholas gave him a cold look. "It's hot."

Paul finally caught on and smiled. "I get it, I get it."

"I'll go check on Josie," Caroline said hurriedly and left in a fluster.

Paul had brought some food. When Caroline returned to the hospital room, Josie was awake and about to cry because she couldn't see Caroline. Lisa couldn't calm her down.

As soon as Josie saw Caroline, she clung to her.

Caroline gently comforted her, "It's okay, Josie. I'm here. This won't happen again. Just think of it as a nightmare. When you wake up, it's gone."

Josie nodded in her arms.

"Mommy, where's Daddy?"

"Your daddy is next door. He'll come to see you soon."

"Where's Charles?" She had seen Charles bleeding a lot.

"Charles is hurt."

"Is it serious?"

"Yes."

"Can I see Charles?"

"Okay."

"After we eat." Nicholas and Paul came in.

"Daddy, Uncle Paul."

"My little sweetheart," Paul rushed over to hug Josie, but she hid in Caroline's arms.

Paul looked hurt. "Josie, don't you like me anymore?"

Caroline explained, "Josie is scared and a bit clingy."

Paul pouted. "Alright, Josie is scared. Let's eat something good."

After eating, they took Josie to see Charles.

Josie looked inside through the glass.

"Hope Charles gets better soon."

Caroline patted Josie's head. "He will get better."

Nicholas had already decided that once Charles' condition improved, he would send him to Country M, where Nicholas had a medical team that would provide Charles with the best treatment and care.
