Chapter 687 Foul Play
Aragorn was dead set on leaving the hospital, and neither Ashley nor Gummidge could change his mind. So, they tagged along with him to the company.
When they walked in, the employees were totally caught off guard by Aragorn's sudden appearance.
But Nicholas? Nowhere to be found.
Aragorn made a beeline for the general manager's office and called for an emergency meeting with all the top brass.
Seeing only half the usual senior staff in the room, Aragorn's anger hit the roof.
"Where's Nicholas?" he demanded.
The general manager replied, "Mr. Nicholas Watson is out on business."
"Get him back here, now."
The general manager sent someone to fetch Nicholas.
Nicholas was knee-deep in work at the new company when he got the call. He froze for a second, then dialed Paul.
"What? Uncle Aragorn left the hospital?"
Paul was just as shocked and jumped out of bed.
Half an hour later, Nicholas and Paul showed up at the company at almost the same time.
The meeting room felt like a storm was about to hit, the tension was that thick.
Sharpe wheeled Nicholas in.
Aragorn's eyes locked onto Nicholas. "I trusted you with this company, and you let it fall apart?" he said, his voice full of pain.
Nicholas stayed silent, feeling a wave of helplessness.
His whole life had been dictated by Aragorn. Anything Aragorn was against, he couldn't do. Anything Aragorn wanted, he had to do.
He had to pick his major because Aragorn said so, take over the company because Aragorn said so, make the company thrive because Aragorn said so. He even had to marry into the Wolfs because Aragorn said so.
Aragorn was so mad he looked like he was about to hit Nicholas with his cane, but Gummidge quickly grabbed it.
"Don't hit him, talk it out."
Even though she was also upset with Nicholas, seeing him in a wheelchair made her feel bad for him.
Aragorn yanked his cane back.
"If you can't handle the company, you shouldn't be CEO!"
Everyone in the room gasped.
"Mr. Watson, you can't do that," the general manager and a few senior employees tried to reason with him.
Nicholas, though, just smirked.
"What are you laughing at?" Aragorn snapped.
Nicholas shot back, "You wanted Daniel's daughter's life, and Daniel only wanted one of your companies."
Aragorn exploded, "You ungrateful brat! So you're just gonna hand the company over to Daniel?"
"If your plan had worked back then, there'd be no Caroline in this world," Nicholas said, meeting Aragorn's furious gaze. "And no Nicholas either."
"Isn't that what you wanted all along?"
Aragorn was left speechless, his hand shaking on the cane.
The room went silent. Ashley looked between Nicholas and Aragorn.
"Nicholas, even if your dad messed up, your grandpa built this company from scratch. He'd be heartbroken to see it fall apart under your watch."
"And Aragorn, you need to trust Nicholas. He brought the Watson Group back to life, which shows he's got what it takes. The Watson Group has done better under him than it did under you. We don't need a business marriage to make it stronger."
Ashley tried to talk some sense into both of them, but they still looked like they were ready to go at it, which worried her a lot.
Paul leaned over to Ashley and whispered, "Don't waste your breath. Uncle's not gonna listen."
Ashley shot him a glare.
Paul just gave an awkward smile.
In the meeting room, Nicholas and Aragorn were still locked in a standoff. Aragorn's face was getting paler by the minute, and Gummidge, worried about his health, quickly handed him some medicine.
After a bit, one of the shareholders stood up.
"Mr. Aragorn Watson, the Wolf Group's attacks on us are getting worse. We need to focus on countering them, not fighting among ourselves."
"The company can't function without Mr. Nicholas Watson. There's a ton of work waiting for his decisions."
"Yeah, if Mr. Nicholas Watson leaves, we're really in trouble," another shareholder chimed in.
With everyone backing Nicholas, Aragorn had no choice but to back down.
He looked like he was about to faint from anger.
"Paul, take Mr. Aragorn Watson back to the hospital," Nicholas said calmly, signaling Sharpe to leave.
He didn't even want to call Aragorn his father anymore.
"You..." Aragorn panted, looking like he might pass out.
Gummidge, eyes red, shouted, "Nicholas, do you have any conscience left?"
Nicholas paused, feeling a sharp pain in his chest. He bit his lip and closed his eyes. 'I'm already disappointed and heartbroken, how could I still have a kind heart?' he thought.
"If you think so, then I have no conscience."
With that, Nicholas signaled Sharpe to keep moving.
Gummidge was stunned. 'What does Nicholas mean by that?' she wondered.
Paul and Ashley exchanged a look, then hurriedly took Aragorn back to the hospital, dragging a reluctant Gummidge with them.
Nicholas left the Watson Group but didn't head back to the new company. Instead, he went to the school.
Caroline had just finished class and headed to the parking lot after reading Nicholas's message.
Sharpe stood by the car and greeted her. Caroline opened the car door and got in.
"What's wrong?" she asked, sensing something was off with Nicholas.
Nicholas looked up. "Can I hug you?"
His voice sounded so pitiful, like he'd been through the wringer.
Before Caroline could react, Nicholas pulled her into a tight hug.
His chin rested on her shoulder, and his arms wrapped around her waist. She couldn't move and just let him hold her.
He seemed so fragile.
They stayed like that for a while, Nicholas just holding her quietly, as if he were trying to heal himself.
Eventually, Caroline's body started to feel stiff from holding the same position for so long.
Then Nicholas's muffled voice broke the silence.
"Caroline."
"Yes?"
"I was wrong."
"What happened?"
"I shouldn't have kept those things my father did from you."
Caroline stayed silent.
Nicholas continued, "I promise I won't do it again."
"Can you promise me you'll never leave me?"
"You're all I have."
His voice grew more fragile, making her heart soften involuntarily, stirring up a sense of affection.
Caroline hummed, "Don't think you can make me soften up like this. Actions speak louder than words."
Nicholas's lips curled up. "Okay, I won't let you down."
As he spoke, he turned his head and kissed her on the neck.
Caroline instantly stiffened, a current spreading from the kissed spot to her entire body. Her ears quickly turned red and hot.
'Nicholas is seducing me!' she screamed in her mind.
