Chapter 778 Shattered Worldviews
"The Murphy Family took advantage of Edith's father's death and the chaos within the Astor Family to seize shares of the Astor Group. Jasper, as the son-in-law, became the actual controlling shareholder of the Astor Group, while Edith, the only daughter, received only a small portion of the shares." Rose gestured with her fingers to show how little it was.
She said angrily, "That's not all. Do you know what's the most disgusting thing?"
Sophia cooperatively asked, "What is it?"
Rose leaned close to Sophia's ear and whispered, "The most disgusting thing is that Jasper has a male lover outside."
Sophia was shocked, and her worldview was almost shattered. 'A male lover, as in the kind I am thinking?'
Rose got goosebumps all over; just mentioning Jasper made her feel unlucky.
"Does Edith know?" Sophia looked at Edith, who was chatting and laughing with others not far away.
"Everyone in our circle knows. How could she not know? And now Jasper doesn't even bother to hide it."
Rose clicked her tongue twice. "I don't know what Edith is thinking, she still hasn't divorced Jasper."
Sophia didn't know how to respond. She could only learn about Edith through what Rose had told her and the few times she had met Edith.
To her, the biggest change in Edith was that her emotions had become more restrained. Her eyes had become more worldly, and her gentle smile had become somewhat forced.
Sophia took a sip of juice as Gabriel finished his conversation and walked over.
"It's getting late," Sophia said.
Sophia stood up to say goodbye to Rose, who pouted, "It would have been great if Caroline were here tonight."
"Caroline should be back soon," Sophia noted.
Rose's eyes lit up. "When she comes back, the three of us should go shopping."
"Sure." Sophia agreed.
Gabriel held Sophia's hand as they prepared to leave. Sophia glanced at Edith and tugged at Gabriel.
"Wait a moment." She then took Gabriel's arm and walked towards Edith.
"Edith," Sophia called out warmly.
Edith turned around, her eyes slightly hazy with drunkenness, and her smile deepened.
"Sophia, you're here too."
She had been socializing and looking for cooperation opportunities all evening and hadn't noticed Sophia at the party.
"Yes, I came with my husband." Sophia smiled.
The middle-aged man who had just tried to take advantage of Edith quickly withdrew his hand, holding his wine glass and immediately flattering Gabriel with a toast. "Mr. Lancaster, hello."
Gabriel nodded indifferently, showing no intention of drinking with him or speaking.
The sleazy man smiled awkwardly. "Mr. Lancaster and Mrs. Lancaster make a perfect couple."
Sophia ignored the man and smiled at Edith. "Edith, I'm leaving now. You should go home and rest early too."
"Okay, be safe on your way home." Edith, like a gentle elder, squinted her eyes and gently reminded Sophia.
With Gabriel and Sophia talking to Edith, the men who had been eyeing Edith immediately changed their attitudes. "Ms. Astor, I didn't know you knew Mr. Lancaster's wife. I apologize for any offense, I'll drink a penalty cup."
"Me too, Ms. Astor. Send me the proposal for the cooperation you mentioned tomorrow."
"By the way, you mentioned your new product earlier. Send me a sample, and if it's good, we can place an order for hundreds of thousands this month."
Before this, these men had made Edith drink over twenty glasses of wine, and every time she brought up work, they changed the subject, talking about the economy and the general environment instead of the cooperation.
Edith was already a bit drunk. She looked up at the dazzling lights on the ceiling, her body swaying slightly.
"Sorry, I'm a bit drunk." Edith took their business cards and found an opportunity to leave.
Edith hid in the restroom and sent a message to Sophia on her phone.
Edith: [Thank you.]
Those two words carried all her emotions.
She leaned against the door, looking up, but tears still fell.
She quickly wiped them away.
All these years, no matter how hard it was, she hadn't cried. 'Why do I cry just because Sophia helps me a little?'
The alcohol was kicking in, so Edith quickly composed herself and left through the back door of the banquet hall.
In the parking lot, the driver hadn't arrived yet. Edith staggered to her car and fumbled for her keys in her bag, only to drop them.
She bent down to pick them up, but a hand reached them faster.
The hand had long, slender fingers, more beautiful than a hand model's.
Edith straightened up and saw Colin.
She tried to stand firm, maintaining her signature smile.
"What are you doing here?" Her tone was as if she had met a friend.
Colin replied indifferently, "I also came to the party."
"Keys." Edith extended her hand.
Colin placed the keys in her hand.
Edith said, "Thank you."
"I'll take you home." Colin's tone remained cold.
Edith was stunned for a moment, her eyes clearly showing her drunkenness, and she smiled. "No need, I called a driver."
"Where's your husband? Why didn't he come with you to the party?" Colin asked.
At the party, he had been watching Edith almost the entire time, naturally seeing her humbly handing out business cards only to be forced to drink.
He also saw someone trying to take advantage of Edith, and finally, Sophia and Gabriel came to rescue her.
"My husband?" Edith was confused, then laughed, "I don't have a husband."
Colin's heart skipped a beat, his cold voice showing a hint of change. "Aren't you married?"
Edith tilted her head to look at Colin, the alcohol making her more and more unclear.
"Married? Yes, I'm married." She murmured, "Why did I get married?"
"I shouldn't have gotten married." She continued.
Edith's eyes grew more and more dazed, her red lips moving as she mumbled to herself.
"Dad, I don't want to marry him, I don't want to get married."
She slowly squatted down, hugging her knees and burying her face. Her body was trembling, and faint sobs could be heard.
Colin felt a sharp pain in his heart. He squatted down in front of her. "You're drunk, I'll take you home."
He reached out his hand, hesitated for a moment, then firmly helped her up.
Edith's face was covered in tears.
Colin picked her up, placed her in the back seat of the car, and took out a tissue to wipe her tears.
Edith suddenly grabbed his hand. "Dad, can you take me with you?"
Colin looked up at her, her eyes were closed, and tears were once again streaming down her face.
His heart ached painfully.
Colin didn't know where Edith lived, so he took her to a hotel.
Edith was very obedient, quiet after her initial crying.
In her dream, Edith smelled a familiar scent, and the unease and pain in her heart were instantly dispelled.
In Colin's arms, she even snuggled a few times.
