Chapter 584A Bolt from the Blue

Hearing Caroline's question, Nicholas figured Lisa must've spilled the beans.

"Yeah, saw it on Paul's phone."

"Paul? Whose pic is that?" Caroline asked, clearly on edge.

She'd always thought her folks ditched her, which is why she was the only one without family to take her home.

But from what she got from Saskia, maybe she wasn't abandoned; maybe someone shady made her vanish.

That person might've even tried to off her.

Seeing the urgency on her pretty face, Nicholas guessed she hadn't been chilling with Lisa these past few days but digging into her own past.

"Paul said it was a pic of Diana when she was a kid."

"What?"

It was like a bomb went off in Caroline's head; she couldn't even think straight.

Nicholas frowned a bit, wondering, 'Does she know something?'

He'd gone to City H to find Hope Orphanage and Saskia, but he hadn't scored any pics of Caroline as a kid, so he still couldn't confirm his hunch.

But seeing Caroline's reaction, she seemed to have already figured it out in her heart.

Just as Nicholas was about to ask, Caroline suddenly grabbed his hand tight, her nails digging into his skin from the emotional outburst.

"Nicholas, can you ask Paul to send you that pic?"

She couldn't wrap her head around it and refused to believe it.

She thought, 'If Diana looked a lot like me when she was a kid, does that mean I might be related to the Wolfs?'

Her head was spinning, and her ears were ringing.

The Wolfs she hated the most might actually be her family.

Caroline thought, 'How messed up is that?'

Nicholas let Caroline squeeze his arm, bearing the pain without a peep.

He picked up his phone and called Paul.

As soon as the call connected, he blurted out, "Send me the pic of Diana as a kid that Clayton sent you the other day."

Nicholas said it all in one breath, and Paul almost didn't catch it, taking a couple of seconds to react.

"Okay, I'll send it right away."

After hanging up, Paul quickly found the pic and forwarded it to Nicholas.

The moment Nicholas opened it, Caroline snatched it away.

She stared at the pic with wide eyes, her vision blurred by what seemed like a mist. She rubbed her eyes.

The little girl in the pic was also very thin, but not as thin as she was. Her pic was taken after being tormented by human traffickers, while the little girl in the pic had a sweeter smile and brighter eyes.

Afraid of making a mistake, Caroline took out the pic she got from Saskia and placed them side by side.

Nicholas's eyes widened in surprise and he asked anxiously, "Who is this?"

Caroline's voice was hoarse. "It's me when I was a kid."

Although the little girls in the two pics were dressed differently and the environments were different, it was clear that they looked exactly the same.

'No, they are the same person!' Caroline screamed in her mind.

Caroline's tears fell unexpectedly.

Caroline questioned herself, 'Why do I have to be related to the Wolfs?'

She really didn't want it at all.

'No, just because I looked like Diana as a kid didn't mean anything. Yeah, that's it. There are tons of people in the world who look alike; me and Diana are just a coincidence. Yeah, that's it,' Caroline thought.

Caroline was about to say, 'It's just a resemblance, it doesn't mean anything.'

But Nicholas beat her to it, "Diana Scott ain't the Wolfs' kid; you are!"

Caroline stared at him, tears in her eyes, looking totally lost.

"We just looked alike as kids, that's normal. It doesn't mean..."

Nicholas's eyes lit up with surprise as he looked at Caroline.

"Diana's a fake. Mr. Wolf already dug into this. Mr. Wolf only has one kid. Caroline, this photo proves it all; you're Mr. Wolf's daughter."

"If you think this isn't enough, you can do a DNA test."

"I won't do it." Caroline suddenly let go of him. She stood up, her face growing colder. "I don't want to do it."

Nicholas immediately got the hint.

"Okay, if you don't want to, then we won't."

Caroline's expression softened, and she sat back down.

The room was silent for half a minute before Nicholas cautiously asked, "Do you not want to acknowledge them?"

Caroline was quiet for a long time before she said, "Let me think about it."

"Okay."

Nicholas held her hand. "No matter what you decide, I got your back. I'll always be here for you. Remember, I'm your and Josie's rock."

Caroline bit her lip. "I'm kinda tired. Gonna go rest for a bit."

"Okay."

Nicholas watched Caroline head back to her room.

Lisa came out of the kitchen and asked, "Where's Caroline?"

"She went to rest." Nicholas's eyes were deep as he said, "Lisa, can you tell me what happened to Caroline when she was a kid?"

Last time, they were interrupted by Caroline's sudden appearance. This time, he had to get the full story and understand Caroline's past.

Lisa wiped her hands on her apron, then sat down and sighed.

She told Nicholas everything about how Caroline was rescued by the cops from human traffickers, how she escaped from a fire, and how Lisa brought Caroline to City B to start fresh.

As Nicholas listened, his frown deepened, and his fists clenched tighter.

'Caroline had gone through so much at such a young age.' Nicholas felt a sharp pain in his heart.

"Among the kids rescued with Caroline, were all of them from City H except for Caroline?" Nicholas caught a key detail.

Lisa nodded, "Yeah."

So those kids went home with their families, but Caroline didn't have anyone.

"Did the captured traffickers confess where Caroline was taken from?"

"They said Caroline had passed through many hands and didn't know which city she came from."

In that case, it was almost impossible to trace back and find the person who took Caroline.

Nicholas thought for a while, but it didn't seem entirely hopeless.

'Maybe Diana would be a lead.' He thought.

As dinner time rolled around, Caroline still hadn't come out of her room. Nicholas stopped at her door, raising his hand to knock but stopping halfway.

Until Sharpe brought Josie back.

Josie ran to Nicholas.

Nicholas pointed inside and lowered his voice, "Your mom's a bit upset. Can you cheer her up and get her to come out for dinner?"

Josie nodded and asked, "Why's Mom upset? Did Dad make her mad?"

Nicholas felt wronged and said, "No, it's something else."

Josie pouted, "If Dad made Mom upset, then I wouldn't cheer her up for you."

Nicholas was taken aback and thought, 'Josie's getting pretty sharp now.'

He pinched Josie's nose.

"Dad promises, Dad didn't make Mom upset this time."

"Fine."

Josie turned the doorknob and quickly ran inside.
