Chapter 442 The Identity of a Friend

Sophia felt flustered. Her heart was pounding like crazy.

She wanted to run away, but Gabriel was holding her hand.

Sophia gently pulled her hand away.

Gabriel winced, and Sophia turned toward him, concerned. "Did I hurt you? Are you okay? Let me take a look at it."

Gabriel grabbed both her hands, looking into her worried eyes. At that moment, he felt like facing possible death had beenworth it.

"I'm fine," Gabriel whispered in her ear, making Sophia's heart flutter. He pulled her to sit beside him.

"Sophie, I'm sorry." He had lost count of how many times he had apologized.

Gabriel kept blaming himself. 'Why didn't I insist on going to Harbor Bay that day? Why did I go to the hospital to warn Tiffany? If I had gone to Harbor Bay, maybe Sophia wouldn't have been kidnapped and been so scared.'

Gabriel wanted to hold Sophia, but any movement hurt his wound, so he just held her hand. "I'm sorry I was late that night."

Thinking about that night brought tears to Sophia's eyes. She shook her head, and the tears fell. "You weren't late, not at all."

If he hadn't arrived in time, she would have been dead.

How could he think he had been late?

"I'm sorry for making you cry again." Gabriel quickly wiped her tears, his thumb brushing her cheek.

His hand felt warm on her face, and that warmth seeped into her heart.

Sophia said, "Stop saying sorry."

She looked at Gabriel through her tears. There was something she had been keeping to herself since he woke up, and now that they were alone, she couldn't hold it in any longer. "Gabriel, I'm so glad that you're alive!"

Gabriel was stunned. He finally saw no resentment in her eyes.

"Are you really glad that I'm alive?" he asked.

He thought she would rather he were dead. After all, he had hurt her so much. During childbirth, she had almost lost her life, and later he had said and done so many hurtful things.

It would only be natural for her to hate him and not forgive him.

Now that he had been so close to dying, he understood how desperate and terrified she must have felt back then.

Sophia nodded, and Gabriel ignored the pain from his injuries and hugged her tightly, as happy as a child.

"Sophie, have you forgiven me? That's great. I will make it up to you from now on. I love you, Sophia. I don't know when it started, but I have fallen in love with you." His voice was low and sincere.

At that moment, he just wanted to tell her everything in his heart and to let her know how deep his feelings for her were.

Leaning against his chest, Sophia listened to his steadyheartbeat and couldn't help smiling.

"I have forgiven you, but I haven't thought about getting back together. Let's just be friends for now."

Gabriel's body stiffened for a moment. He understood that Sophia still didn't feel secure with him, but that was okay. He would slowly give her the security she needed and gradually make his way back into her heart.

He smiled faintly. "Alright, as long as you're giving me a chance, we can be whatever you want."

He tilted his head slightly, his lips brushing her earlobe. His deep voice made her shiver and blush.

A warm, ambiguous vibe spread between them.

Sophia wanted to push him away.

Gabriel cried out in pain again.

"Did that open up your wound again? Let me see."

This time Gabriel let her go, and Sophia saw that his wound had started bleeding.

Sophia quickly pressed the call button for the nurse, who re-bandaged Gabriel's wound.

"Mr. Lancaster's injuries are severe and healing slowly. He shouldn't perform any strenuous activities or move around too much for the next few days."

Sophia thought about how tightly he had hugged her and felt a bit embarrassed.

"Yes, we'll be careful. Thank you," she replied quickly.

After the nurse left, Sophia glared at Gabriel, who was still smiling. "I'll take the kids home. I'll have Betty bring you some more porridge later."

Gabriel wanted Sophia to stay but thought about the three kids and decided not to take up too much of her time. "Be careful on the way home."

"Okay."

After Sophia left, Gabriel looked at the spot where she had been sitting, and the smile on his face wouldn't fade.

"Mommy, why is your face so red?" Emma asked, puzzled.

Ethan and Sam also looked over.

Sophia touched her warm cheeks and casually said, "I'm just feeling a little warm."

"Mommy, are you catching a cold?" Ethan asked, frowning with concern.

"No, I'm not catching a cold. It's just hot. Don't worry, I'll be fine in a bit."

James, standing nearby, smiled knowingly.

He clearly knew that Sophia's blush wasn't from the heat. She had just come out of Gabriel's ward, so she must have done something with Gabriel.

It seemed that Sophia would soon resume her role as Gabriel's wife.

The Lancaster family was about to have a hostess in the house again.

The three kids didn't understand and worried all the way home. When they saw Sophia's face return to normal, they all breathed a sigh of relief.

Gabriel was sick. Ruth was sick. They didn't want Sophia to get sick too.

That night, the three kids clung to Sophia, insisting on sleeping close to her, making her feel so warm thatshe broke out in a sweat.

Once their worries had eased, they easily fell into a state of exhaustion. That night, Sophia slept deeply, the best sleep she had had in days.

It was a peaceful night.

The next morning, Caroline and Nicholas arrived at the airport in City B.

When Caroline woke up, she found herself in Nicholas' arms. She quickly sat up, feeling guilty, as if she had been caught doing something wrong.

As the plane landed, Nicholas also woke up. He glanced at Caroline indifferently, as if he hadn't noticed that she had been sleeping in his arms.

After disembarking from the plane, Caroline sent a message to Sophia to let her know they had arrived safely.

Sharpe had arranged for a car for them. Caroline had originally planned to part ways with Nicholas at the airport and take a cab with Josie and Lisa.

However,Sharpe didn't give her a chance to speak. He loaded all the luggage into the trunk.

Caroline had no choice but to get in the car.

Sharpe drove while Lisa sat in the front passenger seat. Caroline and Nicholas sat in the back with Josie.

"Sharpe, take us to the hotel," Caroline said, giving the address.

Nicholas's eyebrows furrowed immediately.
