Chapter 714 Discovery
Nicholas smiled faintly, "You can decide when we get married. At the wedding, could you personally walk Caroline down the aisle to me?"
Lisa nodded, "Sure, I'll personally..."
She looked around, as if searching for something.
"Where's Josie?"
"Josie is still at school. I sent someone to pick her up."
"No need for that. Let her focus on her studies. When Josie grows up, she can become an outstanding violinist like Caroline."
Caroline wanted to cry but held back.
Suddenly, Lisa coughed up a large mouthful of blood. It seemed to drain all her energy, and in an instant, she looked like her soul had been taken away. She collapsed weakly, her grip on their hands loosening.
Caroline quickly grabbed her hand.
"Mom, doctor, get the doctor here quickly."
Lisa's hand moved slightly, and she said with difficulty, "No need."
"Even though I didn't get to see you two get married, I'm already satisfied."
"Nicholas, you must take good care of Caroline and make her happy forever."
Nicholas nodded solemnly, "I will!"
Lisa looked at Caroline with a kind and gentle smile. Gradually, the heart monitor stopped.
Caroline shouted, "Lisa!"
On that gloomy morning, Lisa passed away peacefully.
The Wolf family held a grand funeral for Lisa, sharing her lifelong dedication to the orphanage in a story online and asking major media outlets to repost it.
On the day of the funeral, many of the orphans who had left the orphanage came.
They knelt on the ground and cried bitterly.
Caroline watched coldly. If it weren't for Lisa's story going viral online and the fear of cyber-violence, these people wouldn't have come to pay their respects.
Of course, some of them were genuinely there to mourn.
Sophia also attended Lisa's funeral.
After it ended, Sophia supported Caroline, "My condolences."
Caroline leaned on Sophia's shoulder, "I tried so hard, but in the end, I couldn't save Lisa."
Sophia hugged her shoulders, "Don't blame yourself. You managed to give Lisa two more years. She had no regrets when she left."
Caroline nodded.
She still felt very sad.
These past few days, every time she closed her eyes, she saw Lisa.
Linda and Daniel were heartbroken to see Caroline losing weight during this time.
Sophia quietly waved at Josie.
Josie understood and got down from Daniel's arms. She walked over and held Caroline's hand, "Mom, don't be sad. Lisa wouldn't be happy to see you like this from up in heaven."
Caroline squatted down and hugged Josie, "Okay, Mom won't be sad anymore."
Josie patted Caroline's back. Even though she was also very sad, she felt that Caroline was even sadder.
Sophia watched as Caroline, the Wolf family, and Nicholas got into the car. Gabriel walked over and took her hand, "Let's go."
"Okay." Sophia replied.
People who attended the funeral gradually left. Sophia got into the passenger seat, and Gabriel drove slowly towards downtown.
Gabriel was still very busy, leaving early and coming back late every day, sometimes even returning in the middle of the night.
On the way, Gabriel received a phone call. His expression changed, and after hanging up, he said to Sophia, "I need to go to Country M."
Sophia asked, "When?"
"At four in the afternoon."
"What happened?"
"Harrison had an accident over there."
Sophia became nervous, remembering the last time Gabriel was attacked by thugs there.
"You..."
"Don't worry, I'll bring enough people this time."
"Okay, if you need help, you can ask my uncle."
Even though the Blackwood family had moved back to the country, they still had relationships over there.
Gabriel nodded.
He dropped Sophia off at Fusion Dynamics Corporation and then immediately returned to his company, not even having time to go home and pack.
At Fusion Dynamics Corporation, Sophia checked the time. There were still three hours before Gabriel's flight. She thought she could go home and pack his luggage in time.
Sophia quickly drove home.
"Sophie, why are you back so suddenly?" Ruth asked.
Sophia hurried upstairs and quickly explained, "Gabriel is going on a business trip. I came back to pack his clothes."
Gabriel on a business trip? That was quite sudden.
Ruth smiled, happy to see Sophia and Gabriel's relationship improving.
Sophia quickly packed some daily necessities and three sets of clothes for Gabriel, then carried the suitcase downstairs.
"Be careful," Ruth reminded.
"Got it."
Sophia took the luggage directly to the airport, and handed it over just in time before Gabriel went through security.
Gabriel was momentarily stunned and he felt warm inside.
He hugged Sophia tightly, "Wait for me to come back."
Sophia replied, "Okay, be careful."
Gabriel cupped Sophia's face.
Alex realized what was happening and quickly turned away.
The next moment, Gabriel kissed Sophia on the lips.
Half a minute later, Gabriel let go of Sophia, "I'm leaving."
"Okay." Sophia nodded.
Sophia stood there until Gabriel's figure completely disappeared. Her unease slowly resurfaced.
She had lived in Country M for several years and was familiar with it, but now the place seemed full of unknown dangers.
That night, after putting the kids to bed, Sophia returned to her room.
These days, Gabriel would come to her room as soon as he got home. In just a few days, she had gotten used to his presence.
Now that he wasn't there, she couldn't sleep.
Sophia decided to get up and go to her studio to work.
Passing by Gabriel's study, she paused and, on a whim, decided to go in.
The study door wasn't locked, and Gabriel never restricted anyone from entering. Sophia thought it would be nice to read a book in there.
She turned on the light and looked around Gabriel's study. The decoration was simple yet luxurious and grand.
Sophia walked to the desk. She realized she missed Gabriel a lot, really a lot.
So she sat in his chair and picked up a book from the desk.
A photo fell out.
Sophia bent down to pick it up. As she stood up, she noticed a few bottles of medicine in an open drawer.
Curiously, she pulled open the drawer and took out the medicine.
They were all for treating and preventing early-stage cancer and severe stomach ulcers. She suddenly remembered how Gabriel had often looked pale recently. She had thought it was due to overwork.
So Gabriel was sick!
To confirm her suspicion, Sophia searched the drawer for medical records but found nothing.
She called Gabriel, but his phone was still off.
Sophia angrily threw the medicine onto the desk.
"Gabriel, how dare you hide your illness from me!"
