Chapter 575 Rescue
Diana just wouldn't drop it. "Caroline, I don't care if you see me as a friend or not, I've already booked us a table for tonight. Just spare me a bit of your oh-so-precious time for dinner."
Caroline, finally caving to her persistence, agreed.
Today, Lisa had a check-up, but Caroline couldn't tag along because of some big meeting at school.
Nicholas stepped up and offered to take Lisa to the hospital.
Caroline shot Lisa a text saying she wouldn't be home for dinner.
When Lisa told Nicholas, he felt a bit bummed out.
"Stay for dinner, you can keep Josie company tonight," Lisa suggested.
Nicholas nodded. Even though Caroline wasn't around, he wanted to be close to her.
Diana and Caroline rolled up to this swanky restaurant, and Diana went all out, ordering a ton of dishes.
"Caroline, dig in."
Caroline gave a faint smile.
She always thought Diana was the quiet type, but now Diana was yapping away, talking about everything under the sun.
It made Caroline feel a bit off.
Something was definitely up with Diana today, but she couldn't quite figure it out. After all, she didn't know Diana that well.
They spent an hour munching away.
Afterward, Caroline wanted to head home.
Diana insisted they take a walk to burn off dinner.
Caroline had stuffed herself, and since it was still early, she figured a walk might do her some good.
Diana linked arms with her.
"Caroline, I heard about you and Nicholas. I think he's head over heels for you. He even whipped out a paternity test at the banquet."
Diana sighed.
"I think Daisy was wrong. You and Nicholas are a thing, and Daisy shouldn't have used family ties to split you two up."
"And I heard the original engagement with the Watsons was supposed to be mine, but since I went missing, it fell to Daisy."
Hearing this, Caroline's expression shifted slightly.
"You were engaged to Nicholas?"
Diana smiled, "Caroline, chill. I don't like Nicholas, and I'm not gonna take him from you."
"Besides, Daisy wouldn't hand the engagement back to me anyway."
Caroline's brows furrowed and then relaxed.
Diana's chatter had distracted her, and she didn't notice they were wandering off the main path.
When Caroline realized it, the streetlights were getting sparse, and the light was super dim.
"This is too far off. Let's head back."
"Okay." Diana looked scared too.
But as they turned around, four guys appeared in front of them, grinning like creeps.
"Hey, ladies, out for a stroll? Need some company?"
Caroline frowned hard, pulling Diana to turn and run, but there were three more guys coming up from behind.
Caroline's heart sank, and she gripped her phone tight, scoping out the surroundings.
It was a dead end, with high walls boxing them in.
"Caroline, what do we do?" Diana's voice was shaky.
"Don't freak out. We'll run back the way we came. When I make a move, you bolt."
"Okay!"
Diana tried to keep her nerves in check, watching Caroline step in front of her, her heart pounding.
Diana thought to herself, 'Caroline's my savior, and now she's got my back in danger. But I...'
No time to dwell on it as the guys closed in.
A fierce look flashed in Caroline's eyes, and she kicked one of the dudes hard. He dodged, but she quickly followed up with another swift kick.
As she finally broke through, she yelled, "Run!"
"Caroline!" Diana's terrified scream echoed.
Diana got grabbed by two of the guys.
"Caroline, run! Don't worry about me, go get help."
Caroline made a snap decision, smashing her phone against one guy's head and seizing the chance to bolt.
Diana was too weak, and Caroline couldn't take on seven strong guys alone, so she had to run first.
She remembered there were people not far away.
She sprinted and came across a group of folks chatting and laughing. The backlight made it hard to see their faces clearly.
But there were both guys and girls.
Caroline rushed over.
"Help, quick, there are thugs over there." Caroline, panting, grabbed one of them.
It was Clayton.
"Caroline?" Clayton called her name, a weird look crossing his face.
Caroline snapped back. "Quick, Diana's been grabbed by some guys. They're gonna hurt her."
Clayton asked urgently, "Where?"
"Over there!"
Clayton was out with his classmates for a hangout. After dinner, they planned to go singing. Now, hearing this, they all ran over to save Diana, feeling all heroic.
Caroline quickly tried to call the cops, but her phone screen was shattered from the hit.
Clayton and his classmates kept charging forward. Caroline gritted her teeth and kept running, then found a passerby to call the police before rushing back.
But when she got back, only Clayton and his classmates were there, searching for Diana.
"Where's Diana?" Caroline grabbed Clayton, panicking.
"When we got here, there was no one."
Caroline's face went pale, "Quick, search, over there."
Ten minutes later, the cops arrived. When they found Diana, her clothes were a mess, and the thugs had already bailed.
At the hospital, Linda rushed over in slippers.
Seeing Diana's dazed look, with slap marks on her face and scratches on her neck, Linda's heart broke.
"Diana, my Diana."
Hearing Linda's voice, Diana's tears fell instantly.
"Mom, I'm so scared. Mom, I'm ruined." Diana trembled all over.
A sharp pain tore through Linda's heart; tears welled up in her eyes. She held back her anger and gently comforted Diana.
"No, my Diana is still pure. It's okay, I'm here, don't be afraid."
Caroline stood at the door, her hair a mess, clothes wrinkled, and sweat-matted hair sticking to her face.
Mia, after talking to the cops, saw Caroline and pulled her aside.
"It's you again, Caroline. Why is it always you? Daisy's already had so much bad luck because of you. Diana just had a meal with you and this happens. Caroline, how heartless can you be!"
Linda heard Mia's words, her eyes bloodshot, looking at Caroline with a probing gaze.
Caroline didn't want to deal with Mia; she felt the need to clear things up with Linda.
"Mrs. Wolf, I..."
