Chapter 309 Trigger
At this moment, Gabriel showed no trace of his usual aloofness, only humility and fear.
Gabriel feared Sophia's "death" once again.
The emotions that Gabriel had once ignored resurfaced.
On another temporary bed in the ward, Emma had already cried herself to sleep, Sam and Ethan opened their eyes to look at their dad confessing and pleading for their mom to wake up in front of her bed.
Ethan's little fists clenched tightly, feeling conflicted.
If Mom didn't wake up, he would never forgive Dad!
Sam felt very sad. He didn't know what Dad had done to Mom, but he knew Dad was a good dad.
But it seemed like everyone was blaming Dad. They all said Mom was lying here unwilling to wake up because of Dad.
Gabriel didn't notice that Ethan and Sam were awake; he kept talking softly.
Until Vincent came to visit.
Vincent had deliberately switched to working the night shift today so that he could take care of Sophia more conveniently at night.
Caroline couldn't get away from her duties as the headmistress' daughter, so she had to go.
Colin and Madam wanted to stay, but Madam was not in good health and was not suitable to stay too long to take care of Sophia.
Colin was just Sam's psychologist after all, and Caroline didn't want to impose on Colin to stay and look after Sophia.
The three children refused to leave the hospital, so Vincent had a bed brought in for them to rest.
Vincent pushed the door open slowly and was displeased to see Gabriel sitting there.
To avoid waking the children, Vincent lowered his voice, and said, "Sophia needs rest. You need to leave."
Gabriel raised his head, and Vincent was shocked.
Gabriel's eyes were bloodshot, and his face looked exhausted.
Gabriel gently put down Sophia's hand, covered her with the blanket, and left without saying a word.
Vincent checked the instruments and looked at Sophia's heart rate monitor, and everything seemed normal for now.
Vincent left the room.
Gabriel waited at the door for Vincent.
When Vincent came out, Gabriel hoarsely asked, "Can you tell me more about what happened back then?"
Vincent gave Gabriel a probing look.
Was Gabriel trying to hurt Sophia again?
With Sophia in her current state, there was nothing to harm her for.
Vincent was angry and felt like giving Gabriel a punch or two again.
Gabriel spoke again, this time with a hint of pleading in his tone.
Gabriel pleaded, "Please tell me."
Vincent was surprised. Had Gabriel finally realized and regretted it? It was too late.
Vincent decided to tell Gabriel, to make him suffer, to make him feel guilty.
Sophia's sins couldn't go unpunished.
The two men sat down. In fact, Gabriel could have found out on his own, but searching would take time, and the feelings from hearing it firsthand were different from reading it.
Vincent recalled the events, "When Sophia was brought to the hospital, she had premature birth and encountered difficulties. The doctors were originally going to perform a cesarean section on her, but she suddenly had a hemorrhage.
"Sophia's heart stopped beating at one point. I knew she didn't want to live, but I brought her back from the brink of death.
"Although the situation was chaotic at the time, I realized that the hemorrhage was not an accident. Someone wanted to harm her, causing her heart to stop. To protect her, I had to stage a fake death."
Vincent had also investigated it, but found no evidence or suspicious individuals.
Vincent was frustrated by this.
Vincent continued, "Sophia said she wanted to go to a place where no one knew her, so I sent her and the child abroad.
"Sophia is very resilient. Over there, she worked, studied, and fought against depression while taking care of the child.
"During the most difficult times, Sophia took a lot of medication for depression. As a result, Sophia's stomach was damaged, causing frequent and unbearable pain.
"Sophia always said that the children were her destiny, her angel, because the children healed her depression, and she gradually became stronger because of the children.
"When you appeared, you took the children away, which was equivalent to taking away Sophia's life.
"Gabriel, you owe Sophia, and this debt cannot be repaid in this lifetime."
Vincent's words made Gabriel even more distressed. He stared at his toes, feeling the weight of his actions.
It was hard to imagine how difficult it must have been for Sophia abroad, and how he, upon seeing her alive, reacted with such anger, even wanting to take the children away when he found out they were still alive, angry at Sophia's concealment.
If he had known that his actions would crush Sophia's hope of living, he would never have done it.
But now it was too late.
He could only hope that Sophia would wake up.
As long as Sophia lived well, she could do whatever she wanted.
Vincent left, leaving Gabriel sitting there alone, his figure lonely, the air around him heavy with sadness.
Early the next day, the doctor came to examine Sophia and sighed.
The doctor informed them, "Sophia is out of danger now, but she is subconsciously unwilling to wake up. You must talk to her more and bring her back to reality.
"Otherwise, continuing like this is very detrimental to Sophia's body and may even lead to a prolonged coma."
These words weighed heavily on everyone's hearts.
Caroline held back the urge to cry and looked at Colin.
Colin furrowed his brow in frustration and said, "I'm afraid Sophia is trapped in a beautiful dream. All we can do is talk to her.
"It's best to have someone she dislikes come and say things she dislikes, maybe that will break her beautiful dream."
When dreams are shattered, people naturally want to wake up.
Just like someone who has had a nightmare and doesn't want to close their eyes and continue dreaming.
Caroline asked, bewildered, "Someone she dislikes?"
The person Sophia dislikes the most is Gabriel.
For a moment, Caroline felt a mix of emotions.
At this critical moment, Gabriel could still have this effect.
Colin asked, "By the way, before Sophia started taking medication, was there anything else that triggered her?"
Depression doesn't just suddenly erupt; it accumulates layer by layer until it reaches a point where all hope is lost, leading to self-destruction.
Mrs. Lancaster, who had been listening on the side, suddenly changed her expression. Her aged face grew paler, and her lips trembled.
Mrs. Lancaster confessed, "It was me who told Emma to say those words to Sophia..."
"What did you say?" Colin asked.
Mrs. Lancaster explained, "I had Emma express how much she loved her father and wanted to be with him forever."
Colin explained, "For a person with depression, any word could worsen their condition."
Clearly, Sophia had already been ill before this incident, but she had been suppressing it. After Emma spoke to her, she mistakenly believed she had lost her child completely.
"This worsened Sophia's condition," Madam blamed herself and couldn't accept it. She had unintentionally accelerated Sophia's decision to give up on life.
Madam felt extremely guilty and fainted.
"Madam!" Betty and the others were all in a panic.
