Chapter 456 Couldn't Stay Calm

Sophia sent a funny emoji.

Jake didn't reply, but called half a minute later. Sophia glanced at Gabriel, grabbed her phone, and stepped outside to answer.

"Where are you staying now? Need a new place? I have an empty house you and the kids can move into."

Jake's concern warmed Sophia's heart. "Thanks, I have a safe place now."

"Good. Sophie, if you need anything, let me know."

Jake's concern felt comforting.

Sophia felt warm whenever she spoke to him; Jake was like a true friend to her.

"Okay, I will. Don't forget to eat, even if you're busy."

"Hmm, when can I eat your cooking again?"

Sophia thought about her current place and felt it wasn't right to invite Jake over. "I can come to your place and cook for you sometime."

"Deal." Jake smiled faintly. He knew Sophia was staying at Lancaster Manor, meaning she'd be spending more time with Gabriel. That was why he called, but he sensed Sophia didn't want to leave Lancaster Manor.

Jake's sense of crisis grew.

After hanging up, his smile vanished. Indeed, Gabriel's status in Sophia's heart had grown.

Jake leaned back in his chair.

Why, after doing so much, risking his safety, and being good to her kids, hadn't she fallen for him?

Jake's hand clenched on the table.

He wouldn't give up. Sophia was the only light in his life, and he wanted to hold onto that light, no matter the cost.

Grant came in and saw Jake looking exhausted. He frowned but slowly backed out.

Jake rarely got sick, but this time, he suddenly had a fever. He felt unwell in the morning but ignored it, putting on a black suit and goingto work.

At the office, Grant noticed he looked pale.

"Jake, are you sick?"

Jake raised his hand. "I'm fine. There's an important meeting later."

"You don't look well."

"I'm fine." Jake gave Grant a cold look.

Grant didn't insist.

The meeting was four hours long. Midway through, Jake started to struggle, propping his elbow on the table and resting his face in his hand, feeling drowsy.

The voices of the others sounded like buzzing mosquitoes in his ears.

In the afternoon, Sophia finished work and was about to go to the hospital. She had just gotten into her car when Jake called.

"Jake." Sophia answered.

But it wasn't Jake's voice on the other end.

"Ms. Kelly, hello. I'm Jake's assistant. He's delirious with a high fever and keeps calling your name. Can you come see him?"

"Okay, where is he now?" Sophia agreed without hesitation.

She had spoken to Jake yesterday, and he seemed fine. She even got a good morning message from him this morning.

Sophia was worried about Jake. After hanging up, she rushed to Blue End, where Jake still lived. Even after Sophia sold her house, he hadn't moved.

Sophia had helped him pack after the car accident, so she knew the place well.

Grant opened the door, and Sophia went in.

"How is he?" she asked.

"He's inside. You should go see him."

Sophia nodded, put down her bag, and went into Jake's room. Grant watched her, a glint in his eye.

Jake laid in bed, looking pale. Sophia felt his forehead; it was burning hot. She quickly grabbed the thermometer from the bedside table, checked his temperature, and frowned.

"Has he taken any medicine?" she asked Grant, who had followed her in.

"No, he refuses to take any."

"Wake him up and give him some fever medicine." Sophia gently shook Jake. "Jake, wake up."

Grant helped wake Jake. A few minutes later, Jake woke up, his brows furrowing as he saw Sophia.

"Am I dreaming? Sophia, why are you here?" His voice was hoarse.

"I'm here to check on you. Come on, take your medicine."

Sophia gently fed him a fever pill, and Jake obediently swallowed it. Seeing Sophia's concern, he felt a warmth in his heart.

The emptiness inside him was filled, making Jake feel incredibly content.

"Alright, go back to sleep," Sophie said.

Jake obediently lay down and quickly fell asleep.

Grant said, "He hasn't eaten all day. Could you make some porridge? I can't cook."

Sophia thought for a few seconds before nodding.

It seemed she would be home late tonight.

She went to the kitchen to make porridge.

When the porridge was almost ready, she checked on Jake again. His temperature had gone down, and she sighed in relief.

Sophia came out to say goodbye to Grant and to give him instructions. "The porridge is kept warm. Let him have some when he wakes up."

"Okay, thank you, Ms. Kelly." Grant handed her a glass of water.

Sophia had been busy and hadn't had time to drink. She was thirsty and took the glass.

She picked up her bag. "If Jake's fever returns, take him to the hospital immediately."

"Got it. I'll take good care of him."

Grant watched her drink the water and politely saw her out.

Sophia gave many instructions. As she reached the entrance, a wave of dizziness hit her. The next moment, she fainted.

Grant caught her and called out, "Ms. Kelly?"

Getting no response, he smirked and carried her into Jake's room.

At the hospital, Gabriel kept staring at his phone. Sophia had promised to visit him after work, but she hadn't shown up. She hadn't even sent a message.

Gabriel couldn't help but call her, but Sophia didn't answer.

Could she have gone home? How callous of her.. Gabriel called the house.

Betty told him Sophia hadn't returned.

Gabriel sensed that something was wrong. He quickly called Alex to find Sophia, then called Caroline to confirm Sophia wasn't with her either.

Gabriel couldn't stay calm. He threw off his covers, got dressed, and prepared to go find Sophia.
