Chapter 11 Max
Intensive Care Unit at Duke University Hospital.
A man in a coma lay peacefully on the hospital bed. His face was connected to a ventilator, and various tubes ran throughout his body, providing essential nutrients and monitoring vital signs to keep his heart beating.
He had been lying in the ICU like this for a month, and experts from various departments passing by would shake their heads in pity when they saw him through the glass window.
One cardiovascular specialist made a very candid comment, "With so many tubes inserted, he looks more like a potted plant." The scattered and crisscrossing tubes indeed resembled the vines of a plant.
As soon as the cardiovascular specialist finished speaking, he regretted it. He felt a chill down his spine, as if he was being watched by a wild beast. Turning around, he met Lillian's angry gaze. Others quickly pulled away him and whispered, "That's a big client of our hospital! Don't offend her!"
When Lillian saw Max, who was covered in tubes like a plant, her eyes immediately softened. She took out a bank card from her bag and handed it to the doctor next to her.
"It's the man in the hospital bed who gave me a second chance at life. I can never forget that stormy night. There's ten million dollars in this bank card. Please make sure to arrange the best medical resources for him," Lillian said calmly.
Barry Hall gently pushed away Lillian's hand holding the bank card and said, "You should know that this illness has nothing to do with money."
A month ago, Lillian's brother, Max, was in a car accident and was turned into a vegetable. Despite the collective consultations of experts from various departments at Duke University Hospital, there was no solution. Unable to accept this outcome, Lillian insisted on using expensive respiratory and nutritional equipment to keep Max alive.
It was a bottomless pit of money, with daily investments in the thousands of dollars.
"I can't give up so easily, just as he didn't give up on me. As long as there is a glimmer of hope to save Max, I will do everything in my power," Lillian said firmly.
Faced with such a determined woman, Barry shook his head helplessly. "I understand what you mean. Phantom Kingdom has set up a research lab specifically for awakening vegetative patients. I want to send Max there."
"To be a medical experiment?" Lillian hesitated.
Barry nodded. "Professor Cohen, who is in charge of the experiment, is an authority in the field of brain research. Sending him there is indeed the wisest choice."
In the end, Lillian agreed. Max, who once supported Lillian's second chance at life with his not-so-strong shoulders, now needed her support in return.
"Berry, I trust you. I'll leave everything in your capable hands " Lillian said.
Barry continued, "There's one more thing. You know about the world-renowned dance master Alice recruiting students, right? Her team is globally auditioning resumes, and you've always wanted to advance in your dance career, haven't you? Perhaps, I can help you with this favor."
Lillian had heard a bit about Alice's recruitment of students, which was a dream opportunity for anyone passionate about dance, including Lillian. But at the moment, she hesitated, entangled in family matters that prevented Lillian from following her heart.
"Let's talk about it later. I'm not as free as you imagine," Lillian responded coldly.
"I don't believe that. Lillian, you're no longer the junior sister who helped me with odd jobs in school. You're now a wealthy lady who can easily throw away ten million dollars, yet you say you're not free? That's absurd." Barry joked.
Lillian fell silent. After all, she could only visit the critically ill Max in her spare moments now!
