Chapter 346 Box
Lillian held back her tears, but faint sobs still escaped through her fingers.
Jackson turned around and saw her eyes brimming with tears. He was taken aback.
Then, he quickly turned and hugged her, asking, "Why are you crying all of a sudden?"
Lillian bit her lip, unable to speak.
Seeing her like this, Jackson suddenly remembered that Lillian was like this when they were kids.
Whenever he got hurt, even if he didn't cry out in pain, she would start crying first.
He found it somewhat amusing and pulled down Lillian's hand that was covering her mouth, kissed her tear-streaked cheek, and comforted her. "Are you feeling sorry for me? You fool. It's long healed and doesn't hurt anymore. Alright, it's not worth crying over."
Lillian, gently comforted by him, felt her tears about to fall.
She clenched her hands tightly to hold back, looked up at him, and said, "You're right. It's not worth crying over!"
She thought, 'These were not caused by me. Why should I cry? I'm so ridiculous.'
Jackson thought Lillian was acting strange, but before he could investigate further, his phone rang.
Jackson glanced at the phone screen on the table, and he became tense. He let go of Lillian to answer the call immediately. "Okay, I got it. I'm on my way."
Jackson hung up the phone, turned back to Lillian, and said helplessly, "I have to go out. Don't cry."
He patted Lillian's head and quickly left before Lillian could respond.
Lillian's face was still welled up with tears. She didn't feel comforted by him, only sensed impatience and perfunctoriness.
She raised her hand and slowly wiped her face clean.
Downstairs, the sound of a car driving away could be heard. Lillian sat there in a daze until her phone rang as well.
It was a call from Shirley, and Lillian answered.
"Putting love above friendship, huh? Have you forgotten to invite me and Amelia to dinner because you're dating Jackson?" Shirley's energetic voice came through.
Lillian replied slowly, "Shirley, I think I might give up on Jackson."
There was silence on the other end of the phone.
After a while, Shirley's voice grew louder, and she cursed, "I knew it. Is Jackson tangled up with Wendy again?"
"This time might be more serious," Lillian said with a bitter smile, and then she burst out laughing.
However, the laughter sounded worse than crying, filled with a sense of sarcasm.
"Shirley, Jackson might have someone he's liked for twenty or thirty years, and now that woman is back," Lillian said hoarsely.
"Wait. Twenty or thirty years?" Shirley asked confusedly.
Lillian briefly explained what Wendy had said to Shirley.
This matter felt like a huge stone pressing on her chest, making it hard for her to breathe.
"Lillian, Wendy always causes trouble. She is best at fabricating facts. According to her, Star disappeared when she was twelve. What does a twelve-year-old girl know about love? If Jackson had really been pining for Star all these years, you would have noticed some signs, right? Look, all these years, you haven't noticed anything. Maybe you're overthinking it." Shirley tried to comfort Lillian because she could sense Lillian's collapsing emotions even over the phone.
She wasn't speaking for Jackson. Instead, she felt sorry for Lillian.
But after Shirley finished speaking, she didn't hear Lillian respond. Her heart skipped a beat, and she asked softly, "Could it be that I hit the mark? Lillian, did you really remember something?"
Lillian's breathing was erratic. She did remember something.
It was when Lillian was 10, and she and Jackson hadn't started sleeping in separate rooms yet.
Once, she lost something and was searching everywhere. She found a small wooden box on the top shelf of Jackson's closet.
She curiously opened it, but before she could see what was inside, Jackson got very angry and snatched the box away.
At that time, Jackson already doted on Lillian a lot.
Jackson's room was also considered Lillian's room, and he allowed her to search through his things freely.
However, he was genuinely angry at that time, and she was scared. From then on, she never touched that box again.
Lillian had a premonition that the box might also be related to Star.
"Shirley, don't hang up. Wait me a minute," Lillian quickly said.
