Chapter 844

Lillian listened as Jackson made call after call, his voice steady and composed.

She could hear the occasional honking from his end, knowing he was rushing to her.

She also knew he had already mapped out an escape route for her, and Lillian gradually felt more at ease, completely calming down.

Gripping the steering wheel tightly, she sped down the road, heading towards Mirror Lake.

She trusted Jackson, knowing that as long as she reached Mirror Lake, she could escape.

Even if she couldn't save herself, Jackson would arrive in time to rescue her.

Jackson's plan quickly showed its effectiveness. The road to Mirror Lake became increasingly clear, and soon, she was hitting green lights all the way.

The call remained connected, but neither of them spoke.

On the other end of the line, their slightly heavy breathing intertwined.

As Mirror Lake drew closer, Lillian couldn't help but speak, her voice tinged with a hint of a smile.

"Jackson, if I..."

Before she could finish, Jackson seemed to know what she was about to say and interrupted her sternly.

"Focus on driving, no 'ifs'!"

He wouldn't accept any outcome other than her being safe and sound.

Lillian felt a bit helpless, but she still needed to say what was on her mind.

She nodded and said, "I just reunited with my grandparents. I can't let them go through the pain of losing a loved one again.

I haven't avenged Taylor yet, haven't found the evidence to bring the culprit to justice. And Max just woke up; I haven't seen him healthy and walking freely.

And Shirley, she's been pretty down lately, just pretending to be happy and optimistic in front of me."

She said a lot, finally choking up a bit.

"Lyra, Jeffrey, and you, you all..."

Lillian's vision blurred as the car sped to its limit, the scenery outside whizzing by.

Memories flashed before her eyes, each frame tied to that person, causing a sharp pain in her heart.

There were still so many things she wanted to do with him.

Jackson, almost furious, interrupted her again.

"Don't think for a second that I can take care of all those people and things for you. And if your brake failure has anything to do with the Kelly family, I won't spare any of them! Do you hear me?"

He couldn't lose her, couldn't even bear the thought, let alone the hypothetical.

Lillian bit her lip, tasting a faint hint of blood.

She choked up, seemingly resigned, and said, "I hear you. Don't be so harsh on me; it's making me more nervous. I'm almost at the bridge."

Jackson's voice softened slightly as he responded.

"Okay, try scraping against the guardrail to help slow down."

As soon as Jackson finished speaking, a sharp screeching sound came from the phone, piercing and heart-wrenching.

Jackson's jaw tightened, praying the car would come to a stop.

The next second, he hoped to hear Lillian's cheerful voice telling him the car had stopped.

But instead, three consecutive crashes and the sound of something falling followed, and then the phone went eerily silent.

Jackson's face turned pale, his voice hoarse.

"Lillian! Baby, Lillian! Answer me, wake up!"

The prolonged silence on the other end made Jackson's expression change drastically. He pressed the gas pedal even harder.

Lillian had been knocked unconscious by the impact. When she came to, Jackson's hoarse voice echoed in the car.

He was calling her name over and over, urging her to wake up.

He begged her to respond, his voice broken and desperate, a tone she had never heard from him before.

Lillian bit her tongue hard, slowly regaining her senses.

"Jackson."

She spoke, but her voice was weak, and she didn't know where the phone had fallen.

The call had already been disconnected.

Lillian looked around, surrounded by water. The car was filling up, and besides the sound of water and her rapid breathing, the world seemed completely isolated.

She unbuckled her seatbelt and tried to unlock the car, but the doors wouldn't budge.

She attempted to lower the windows, but the car was completely unresponsive.

Frowning, Lillian searched the car for a window breaker, but it was clear someone didn't want to give her any chance to escape.

Water had already filled most of the car. Lillian tried to dismantle the headrest to use as a makeshift hammer to break the window.

She tried everything she could think of, but nothing worked.

The water was rising too fast. Lillian swallowed several mouthfuls, her strength waning.

She made one last attempt to push the door open as the car filled with water, but she failed again.

The door seemed jammed and unresponsive.

The last bit of air was gone, and the car began to sink rapidly.

Lillian was submerged, her vision darkening from lack of oxygen, her chest feeling like it was about to explode.

She thought she might not make it to see Jackson.

Her eyelids grew heavy, and just as she was about to lose consciousness, she thought she saw something.

Through the window, a familiar figure was rapidly approaching her underwater.

She thought she saw the urgency and fear on Jackson's face. She wanted to see more clearly, to confirm if it was real, but she couldn't.

Lillian felt like she was sinking into a deep, dark abyss, with no light in sight.

It felt like she had walked a long, heavy path. Just as she was about to give up, she saw a glimmer of light and heard a voice calling her.

"Mommy, Mommy, I'm here. Come catch me."

At the end of the light, a small figure was moving.

Lillian struggled, finding the strength to run towards the light, finally breaking through.

But when she looked around, Taylor was nowhere to be seen.

"Taylor! Taylor, where are you? Don't leave Mommy."

Lillian waved her hands anxiously, trying to clear the thick fog around her.

Suddenly, the small figure appeared behind her, pushing her forward.

"Mommy, you're so silly. How could you get lost? Daddy's worried sick. Hurry up, Mommy."

"Taylor!"

Lillian wanted to turn around and see Taylor, to take a good look at him.

But a force seemed to pull her away, and when she looked back, Taylor's small figure was quickly swallowed by the fog.

"Taylor!"

"Lillian, wake up!"

Lillian's nightmare and Jackson's anxious shout seemed to overlap.

Her wildly flailing hand was firmly grasped by Jackson. Lillian's eyes snapped open, fully awake.

And the first thing she saw was Jackson.
